A beautiful book full of good information and lovely visuals...offered at a great price. As a crowd-aversive person, I really wanted to love this book and to use it in planning some regional RV trips.I found many of the attractions to be REALLY "off the beaten path", to the extent that many people may not be interested. For example, there's probably already a historical home of some type in your hometown. There's probably also a historical society of some type that maintains that home. At some point, a dignitary of some type visited that home...and/or something important happened there. If you contact them, the historical society will probably tell you that you're able to arrange for a small-group tour of that home...or that they offer them to the public periodically. Right or wrong, most folks probably don't/won't pursue that tour...although it is a nice, low-crowd opportunity. That kind of gives you somewhat of a feel, in my opinion, for the nature of many of the attractions featured in this book.
I bought this in 2016 knowing full well its 7+ years old from last revision. A significant number of attractions are no longer present. But one can expect as much, given the age. And can forgive that. What my gripe with this book is, is that it really has no logical reason as to why it selects the things it does. It should be named off the interesting path. I'm no expert on all the states covered in it, but the ones I do know well it boggles the mind why they think putting the things they did is a good idea. So many quaint places are missing and so many cracker barrel level (many wont get that reference, but so be it) things are totted as must see.In trying to be clever and selecting unpopular destinations, they managed to select such not because they are hidden gems, but literally because they are not worth seeing. Do yourself a favor and pick something that covers the actual region/state you want to explore. not a country wide guide that fails in all aspects
We are a military family so living in different states and taking a lot of road trips to visit family and friends makes this a perfect book for us. Like others have said it is not a take in your car and reference book but instead a coffee table book but great for looking at a state or area you are in and finding places you want to visit. It is the idea book not the end all book for planning - use the book to brainstorm places that are interesting or along your route then use the internet or more detailed travel books to plan the trip.
Fun book. It got a couple of details wrong about the Guthrie OK Drugstore museum. My Dad was posing for the picture, and yes he did get his start working at a real soda fountain back in the day. The old soda fountain fixtures in the museum are real, but the museum does not serve old-fashioned treats. You can buy bottled root beer, but no root beer float. The museum is worth it. No admission fee to the museum or the garden, but donations are accepted, needed, and appreciated. I can still spend hours browsing. They have an old fashioned black dial phone that still works for making local calls. The kids get a kick out of that, at least the kids who still have a local home phone.
We keep a few reference books in our RV for quick reference when we are on road trips. When we are "off the beaten path" our cell service often leaves much to be desired and these items are a lifesaver. It's also at times just plain fun to do a random pick and get even further off that normal route. A fun part of travel is the special thing you didn't plan on doing. We often grab these & take them in the car too just to see what's available near us. We would recommend this book to frequent or infrequent travelers and we do repurchase these every few years just to keep our travels up to date.
Loads of info about all the states. Excellent companion book for planning time away from the normal crowded venues. History, archaeology, geology, breweries, vintners, mills, parks, quirky shopping, old West...and plenty more.
Has great photos, but actually tells most of the normal touristy places. I was expecting to find exciting "Off the Beaten Path" locations, but this time s a beautiful book of places found in every vacation pamphlets.
Larger and heavier than I expected, but good information. I started by checking out the entries for my home state and was surprised to find a couple of our 'tried and true' hide-away spots. Too many museum entries for my taste, but easy to skip over those. We used this book for a recent Southwest desert trip and found some lovely places, usually off of secondary highways (our preferred method of travel). Good resource.
