Koko and her fascination with cats is a fascination for humans. The bond she feels with felines is a familiar feeling to crazy cat ladies. There's just something irresistible about cats, be you ape or human. This is a wonderful book for children to be introduced to Koko, the sign language using gorilla, with the backdrop of the sweet interspecies relationship. I bought this book for my niece to add to her first grade classroom bookshelf. She was pleased as punch.
I was telling my young daughters about Koko the gorilla and her kitten. They were so amazed I had to immediately get on Amazon and order a copy for them. It's just as I remembered...very heartwarming. My girls are thrilled to have it.
This has long been a favorite book. We have shared it with children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends. Animals like people are not on earth just to entertain us. Animals and people love, care, and are curious. They, like us, show their emotions through tears, laughter, touch, and anger or frustration. If we listen with compassion we can learn about each other; we all grow; and we all keep treasures in our hearts forever.
One of the most remarkable things I took from this book was the profound sadness Koko felt for this kitten she loved - we sometimes need to be reminded that animals are capable of emotions and process loss and grief and joy much like we do - they just can't talk about it. The fact that Koko could communicate these concepts with sign language is what this book is about.
I've loved this book since I was a child, and my two daughters now get to enjoy it as well. The book inspires lots of critical conversations, grief, loss, respecting animals, sign language, etc.
Wonderful book to share with children about Koko, the talking gorilla, who had a kitten pet named All Ball.
Dr Patterson has written this beautiful book which I would advise anyone to read whether child or adult. It demonstrates the capability of animals to love other species in a most pure and lovely way. I have put it on my coffee table and everyone who sees it is enthralled. I will buy more copies as gifts for children. The photographs of Koko make you want to hug her. It has made me have a wider interest in Koko and the Gorilla Foundation and I am now a supporter. Well done Penny and thank you for all your wonderful work with Koko.
We have loved this book for about 25 years! Our children, and now our grandchildren, loved having this book read to them and enjoyed the beautiful pictures. I purchased this copy for a friend's son, who loves it, too! This book shows how Koko the gorilla learned sign language and expresses her feelings through signage. Very sweet and heartwarming! Our family would highly recommend this book!
Spoiler Alert - There is a very sad part in here and was not at all appropriate for small children. The pictures and story are very nice but this is really for an older child.
