The Hacking of the American Mind: The Science Behind the Corporate Takeover of Our Bodies and Brains, by Robert H. Lustig

Review

"Our health, resistance to disease, and ability to function on a day-to-day basis have essentially been hijacked, all in the name of corporate profits. Dr. Lustig explores how industry has manipulated our most deep-seated survival instincts to motivate our food choices in a way that directly undermines our ability to survive. But more importantly, The Hacking of the American Mind eloquently reveals how we can disengage from this influence and re-establish ourselves on a path to wellness." —David Perlmutter, MD, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller, Grain Brain and Brain Maker“A provocative, persuasive plea to stop seeking the wrong kind of happiness. Take it from the neuroscientist/endocrinologist who sounded the alarm about sugar: chasing rewards is far less rewarding than finding contentment.”—Adam Grant, author of New York Times bestsellers Originals and Give and Take, and coauthor of the New York Times bestseller Option B"Robert Lustig takes on one of the greatest paradoxes of our time: how can it be that we have more sources of pleasure than ever before in human history, and yet are increasingly sick, broke, and unhappy? By deftly weaving together neuroscience, history, economics, and more, he provides a much-needed explanation of how the 'pernicious peddling of pleasure' causes real happiness to elude so many of us — and also provides a desperately needed roadmap for escaping the pleasure trap." —Sharon Begley, coauthor of the New York Times best seller The Emotional Life of Your Brain"Pleasure and happiness are not the same thing – as our addictions to everything from unhealthy food to cellphones show. In this book, Dr. Lustig unpacks the science of pleasure versus happiness to explain the true causes of the last 40 years of addiction, depression, and disease. The good news is that the solution is easy — well, maybe not so easy — put down your cellphone. And sleep. You’ll be happier, and you’ll live longer!"—Arianna Huffington, author of the New York Times best seller The Sleep Revolution"Dr. Robert Lustig examines our culture of illness, an industry-created fog that, despite our best efforts to cope, has left us stressed, isolated, addicted, and depressed. With The Hacking of the American Mind, he empowers us with the science of mind, brain, and love in a delightful, insightful, and humorous way. You can live by pursuing pleasure, sugar-coated as 'happiness,' or you can read this book."   —Elissa Epel, coauthor of the New York Times best seller The Telomere Effect

I am the editor and founder of the most visited natural health site on the web and had the opportunity to review Dr. Lustig’s book and interview him before it was published. He is perhaps best known for his brilliant research into sugar and obesity. His previous book, “Fat Chance:” was a New York Times Best Seller. Lustig is an emeritus professor of pediatrics in the division of endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco, and a member of the Institute for Health Policy Studies. His motivation for “writing the book began 30 years ago, while still a postdoctoral fellow in neuroscience at Rockefeller University. There, he learned about the interaction between dopamine and serotonin in the brain. At the time, only basic correlational data existed, but there appeared to be a very specific interaction going on between these two neurochemicals. The book discusses how many try to bolster their happiness through certain food choices, but this actually does not work, and Lustig provides compelling arguments that the foods you crave drive up dopamine and drive down serotonin. Rather, it’s experiences that make you happy. People can make you happy. You can make yourself happy. In his book, Lustig outlines a number of different strategies to become happier. Ultimately, the goal is [to increase] your serotonin,” he says. There are four ways to boost your serotonin, and they’re all free. They’re also things your grandmother likely told you to do. First and foremost is making human connections.Social media generate dopamine, associated with pleasure, and hence can drive addiction. The main problem is that when dopamine goes up, serotonin goes down. So, online communication is actually a major causative factor of unhappiness. Lustig also elaborates on how companies — both food manufacturers and electronics companies — capitalize on the biology of dopamine versus serotonin to get us addicted to their products. It’s important to realize that the dopamine (or reward-generating) pathway is the same no matter what your source of pleasure is. It can be a substance, such as nicotine, alcohol, heroin or junk food; or it can be behavior, such as internet surfing, shopping or pornography. The problem, in a nutshell, is that dopamine is an excitatory neurotransmitter, and in excess is neurotoxic. When dopamine is released, and the neuron on the other side accepts the signal, it can damage that neuron. Over time, excitatory neurotransmitters can cause cell death. To protect itself from damage, the postsynaptic neuron employs a self-protective mechanism — it downregulates its receptors.By having fewer receptors, the dopamine cannot do as much damage. So, each time you get a “hit” or rush of dopamine, the number of receptors decrease. As a result, you need increasingly larger doses or “hits” to get the same rush. Eventually, you end up with tolerance, a state where even a large dose produces no effect. Once the neurons start to actually die off, you’re a full-blown addict. Serotonin, on the other hand, is not an excitatory neurotransmitter. When it acts on the serotonin-1a receptor (the “contentment” receptor), no damage occurs. Hence, happiness does not lead to addictive behavior. Keep in mind that dopamine downregulates serotonin, so it’s basically impossible to achieve happiness (related to serotonin) through pleasure-seeking behavior (related to dopamine). One of the cheapest pleasures that stimulates dopamine is sugar. Many reach for sweet junk food when they feel down, thinking it’ll help them feel better, but neurochemical science reveals this simply cannot happen. Add the stress hormone cortisol to the mix, which downregulates the serotonin-1a receptor, and you have a recipe for both addiction and depression. That’s what we’re seeing throughout all of civilized society, not just in America, but around the world. There are three other ways, besides connecting, that boost serotonin and happiness. The remaining three of the four C’s are:1. Contribute: Meaning the act of contributing to something greater than yourself; making a contribution to society. “You can get happiness and contentment from your job, but there are certain criteria that have to be met,” Lustig says. “Most people, unfortunately, have a boss who is not contributing to their happiness. The workplace is not usually the best place to achieve meaningful contentment.”2. Cope: Lack of sleep, insufficient exercise and multitasking are all causes of unhappiness. Sleep is extremely important for healthy serotonin production. Here, avoiding exposure to electronic screens is important, as blue light inhibits melatonin production, thereby making sleep more elusive. Electronics will also disrupt your sleep and deteriorate your health by exposing you to unnecessary microwaves, discussed in this recent article on depression.3. Cook: If you cook, you’re likely going to increase your tryptophan, reduce your refined sugar intake, and increase your omega-3 fats (anti-inflammatory) and fiber. Overall, this will result in improved gut health, which has tremendous impact on your mood and mental health. How do you boost systemic tryptophan? One of the keys is to eat real food, and to make sure you include high-tryptophan foods, the highest of which is egg whites. You also need omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA, which is a component of every cell in your body. More than 90 percent of the omega-3 fat found in brain tissue is DHA.So, how do you boost systemic tryptophan? One of the keys is to eat real food, and to make sure you include high-tryptophan foods, the highest of which is egg whites. You also need omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA, which is a component of every cell in your body. More than 90 percent of the omega-3 fat found in brain tissue is DHA. Omega-3s are probably the single most beneficial thing you can put in your body. They are anti-inflammatory. They are anti-Alzheimer’s. They increase membrane fluidity. Therefore, they increase neuronal distensibility, which means it’s less likely that any given neuron will die.The problem, of course, is that when we took the fat out of the food, we took ALL the fat out of the food. It’s been a real chore to get the medical cognoscenti to turn around on this. I do want to do a shout out to the American Heart Association, because they have now debunked their long-standing cholesterol-fat hypothesis. They now recognize that saturated fat was not the demon they made it out to be, and that there are seven classes of fats, and that you actually have to consume omega-3s. You have to consume monounsaturated fats. In fact, you do have to consume some saturated fat because it’s a major component of membranes.Processed fructose, mostly in the form of corn syrup, has become a major contributor to the $3 trillion health care budget in the United States, and there’s clear data linking sugar consumption to de novo lipogenesis — a disease process associated with fat accumulation in the liver, causing insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, metabolic syndrome and associated diseases. That includes Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, lipid problems, cardiovascular disease, cancer and dementia. In the past, people had a much better understanding of happiness and pleasure. Lustig’s book describes how these terms have been purposely conflated and confused by businesses and governments because it helped sales. To turn the trends of addiction around, you have to understand the difference between the two.So, what’s the difference between pleasure and happiness? There are seven differences: Pleasure is visceral; happiness is ethereal. Pleasure is short-term; happiness is long-term. Pleasure is usually achieved alone; happiness is usually achieved in social groupings. Pleasure is taking; happiness is giving. Pleasure can be achieved with substances; happiness cannot be achieved with substances. The extremes of pleasure all lead to addiction, whereas there is no such thing as being addicted to happiness. Finally, pleasure is dopamine and happiness is serotonin.Understanding the difference between the two is something, for some reason, that the American public just never got. We have to make them get it in order to turn this problem around. Academics don’t get it. Businesses don’t get it.The federal government certainly doesn’t get it. We have to make them get it. That’s why this book is so crucial. This book will help you understand the distinction between dopamine, serotonin and the variables that help optimize these neurotransmitters. Most importantly, the way he explains it all has the power motivate healthy behavior. The bottom line is it’s about the science. There will be detractors who will say this is garbage. But the bottom line is there are 600 references to the primary literature to demonstrate that this is not gobbledygook. The science actually predicts the phenomena that we see and the society we’ve become.

The information in this book made a ton of sense, and it instantly opened my eyes to many of my behaviors and many less than ideal qualities of my environment. Not only that, these revelations were instantly actionable. I feel liberated. This is a powerful book: it will point you toward an achievable path to wellness and it will show you what has steered you wrong, why you got steered wrong in the first place, and what you can do about it. I gasped several times as Dr. Lustig unveiled mysteries that have flummoxed me for years. I'll be buying this book to give to my loved ones at Christmas. This book is one of the important one, folks: get it.

Dr. Lustig distills his core message in the epilogue: "The keys to benefit from pleasure and happiness are to understand the differences between the two, because even though pleasure and happiness are not mutually exclusive, they can still be opposites."I would add that the key to benefit from this book is not to think that you already understand that sentence. Yes, it does sound like a vaguely new-ageish truism, but it most certainly is not.Lustig redefines pleasure and happiness from neurological and endocrinological perspectives. I was familiar with most of the concepts that he uses, but the combination was still a revelation and it had an instant effect. I haven't read many books that have changed my behaviour within 24 hours. This is a very important book, so it doesn't matter at all that it isn't perfect. I didn't find Lustig's own recommendations for behaviour change very convincing or useful. For me his scientific philosophy was more actionable than his practical advice. I also felt that his political views had a strong content but a relatively weak presentation. The headline point of "the corporate takeover" would have benefited from deeper analysis, but Lustig is a doctor, not a political scientist.Nevertheless, The Hacking of the American Mind has the potential to clarify and rearrange some core elements of our cultural self-image. The book already un-hacked my mind quite effectively. If there is a way to give higher praise, I don't know it.

Amazon.com Review

Suspicion naturally arises when you read a promo line on a back cover that says, "This is the most important book concerning the Great Pyramid written in the last 20 years." In this case, however, it may be fact. In writing The Giza Power Plant, mechanical engineer Christopher Dunn reverse-engineered the Great Pyramid at Giza to discover its use. His startling conclusions blow the heck out of traditional Egyptology's rather silly notions that it was built with copper tools by a society that lacked the wheel. While revisionist pyramid studies are rife with ridiculous theories that give the topic a bad name, The Giza Power Plant takes into account existing fact and artifact without having to rely on unprovable assertions. A must-read for truth seekers who aren't afraid to consider the idea that Western culture of the 21st century may not be the pinnacle of human evolution and achievement. --P. Randall Cohan

"Chris Dunn ranks among the top researchers on this subject. His book is extremely well-researched and presented and, although very controversial in content and conclusions, will no doubt become a landmark and classic in the field of pyramid studies." At last a voice of reason! Every once in a while a fresh view on something old finally comes along. I read this book with relish. Mr. Dunn is no dummy and he knows his stuff. I have ready many books on the pyramids and some of them I throw across the room in disgust--not this one!It is amazing how the "Main Streamists" insist that the pyramids of Giza were tombs when no body has ever been found inside them. They are not decorated inside like a tomb--not built like a tomb. Mr. Dunn is right as far as I am concerned. His arguments make so much sense and he backs them up with his knowledge of engineering.Mr. Dunn has undoubtedly taken a lot of flack and criticism for his views as has Robert Schock. These two men have risked their reputations, tenure, etc. to speak out. A new voice is always listened to with suspicion. Hats off to the men and women of the fresh voice who take us forward to new theories and new knowledge. Thank you, Mr. Dunn, for your forthright opinions and years of research trying to bring us kicking and screaming into a new realm of possibility. This is a wonderful book and an amazing book. I am awed by it!

First; a brief comment about another reviewer. I was looking over some of the old reviews before publishing mine, and out of curiosity I read a 'One-Star' review that was particularly harsh (not to mention lengthy) on Mr. Dunn's work. What I find most disturbing is the fact that it was written by the co-author (Marge Morris) of 'The Pyramids an Enigma Solved." This is a book that I have read and found to be intellectually stimulating, well written and relevant. What I find most distasteful is the fact that this fellow researcher and author, would use this forum to dismiss Mr. Dunn's hard work and research, and then go to great length to promote hers. I would like to believe (since we are all striving to better understand the mysteries of the ancient world), that there is room for more than one theory. Particularly when we are dealing with something as enigmatic and controversial as this subject appears to be. I am sure that Mr. Dunn has had to develop a thick skin over the ensuing years, due to the provocative and novel, leading edge ideas he has posited.Even though her particular review was written many years ago. it is still no less than small-minded, self-promoting, and above all unnecessary.Okay (now that I have that off my chest); this book was published in 1998 and I didn't get around to reading it until 2012, which means I'm a bit behind the 'Power' curve (pun not withstanding), yet as they say "better late than never." I'm so glad this book finally came to my attention and that I took the time to read it. That may have been due to seeing Mr. Dunn on the History channel being interviewed for the show "Ancient Aliens" (a popular show with an unfortunate name that implies everything has something to do with aliens, which I question but do not dismiss completely; I just think there are perhaps other alternatives?). I have also heard Mr. Dunn's interviews on the Coast to Coast late night talk show as well as 'youtube' videos of his presentations and have always found him to be intelligent, forthright and sensible. I would be remiss if I did not add that other theories aside, his appears to bring us much closer to some ultimate understanding of what this mighty edifice of precision engineered stone is all about.I have had the good fortune to have actually taken the tour inside the Great Pyramid of Giza, as a serving member of the USAF back in the mid-nineties. It left indelible impressions on me, and my regret is that as a young man I did not have the understanding or appreciation of Egyptian culture and her monuments, that I now have some twenty years later, after much reading and research on the subject. Back then my understanding of Egypt and her history was based on what I had seen in movies or on TV. Having made that clear, I very well remember walking (more like a stooped crouch as I recall) awkwardly up the ascending corridor and wondering why was it necessary to have a makeshift wooden ramp with cross-members to help tourists and the general public safely ascend to the Grand Gallery; could not the architects have incorporated stairs? Although I did not dwell on such a trivial (to some) issue at the time (due to the overwhelming sensory input akin to a child exploring a mysterious place for the first time), however I was subliminally aware that something was amiss; something did not add up?I was further baffled by the strange configuration of the Grand Gallery, with its odd architecture of corbelled sides rising up and towards each other for some inherent, and yet occluded purpose? Still believing what I had always been told; that this great mountain of stone was built with the sole purpose as a pharaoh's tomb. Upon gaining access to the so-called "Kings Chamber" with its much abused "sarcophagus" (?), I was startled to find that the walls (of which are perfectly flat and squared at the corners) were oddly devoid of any markings? Save for the questionable markings of red ochre paint attributed to the builders (this was unknown to me at the time) who in the manner of 'graffiti' painted the name of their pharaoh who supposedly commissioned this monument for his burial place. These suspect markings were"allegedly" found by one Col. Vyse in 1837, in the (so called) "relieving chambers" directly above the Kings Chamber; which had to be blasted open with gunpowder, no less! There was (is) absolutely no sign of hieroglyphics to be found anywhere else within this immense structure! This from a culture known to cover its monuments and funerary walls with numerous hieroglyphs in honor of deeds accomplished, feats to be remembered, as well as praise for their 'god-like' pharaohs, and with great detail. And yet nothing of the sort is found here; nothing save perfection in stone; stone which feels and looks much older than the attributed 4th dynasty origins (circa 2500 B.C.).Perhaps the author himself said it best when he wrote; "I was astonished and could find no logical resemblance to any feature one would find in a building constructed for human activity."It does make one wonder, if the Great Pyramid was not built for human activity (alive or deceased), than just what the heck was this monumental undertaking designed to do? This is exactly What Chris Dunn, a master craftsman and engineer dares to answer in his ground-breaking and paradigm shifting treatise, which posits no less than the unthinkable; that this mountain of precision engineered stone just might have been designed to "machine tolerances" beyond anything reasonable in the architecture of "HUMAN" habitats or structures, to function as a MACHINE! Or more specifically a "Power Plant," (the functioning details are found in his book).Let's review what has come to light in the last several decades:1. The thee main pyramids of Giza, are aligned to the three bright stars of Orion' belt; thanks to Robert Bauval and his "Orion Correlation Theory."2. The Great Pyramid has been called "The Bible in Stone" by some, due to its antiquity (pre or post deluge?) and the esoteric knowledge built into it by its creators.3. The three main pyramids as well as the Great Sphinx were intended as a set of monuments coeval with an unknown yet interconnected purpose.4. The Sphinx at Giza is far older than previously thought, as evidenced by the "water erosion" apparent on its (un-refurbished) sides as shown by Dr. Robert Schoch; (which would suggest coeval antiquity of the Giza complex as a whole).5. The exterior dimensions of the Great Pyramid show that the builders had knowledge of the circumference of the Earth, our distance from the Sun, as well as the precession of the equinox(s), with its 26,000 year duration , which the ancients called the "Great Year."6. The interior design of the Great Pyramid is unusual, enigmatic and serves no (known) human function imaginable, based on our understanding of architectural science for the human species.7. The (so-called) architectual "Relieving Chambers" layered above the (so-called) "Kings Chamber" (named from the Arabic perspective); are in fact "Relieving" what exactly? The massive weight from above? And yet considering that this chamber is several courses above the (so-called) "Queens Chamber - situated well below it, for which the architects saw no need for "relieving chambers," even though there must be millions of additional tons of stone above it? Clearly these spaced and layered chambers above the 'KC' had another function; (of which Mr. Dunn has an interesting idea that has to do with resonance as I recall).8. No mummified remains of anyone were ever found in the Great Pyramid. And as for the others it is my understanding that any found were from much later periods and in the best tradition of "re-purposing" an already existing monument!9. Contrary to what mainstream Egyptologists would have us believe, Khufu (Gr. Cheops) did not have this pyramid built, but rather inherited it intact, as a legacy structure form a former age, just as the stele found between the paws of the Sphinx has implied.10. The so-named "Gang of Khufu" did not write his name with red ochre paint in the crawlspace of one of the relieving chambers; this was a fraud perpetrated by a glory-hound and fund seeking explorer "wannabe" of Egyptian antiquities; who has been characterized as the "Black sheep" of his family. We find Colonel Vyse, along with his cohort(s) in crime, who accomplished this heinous act of fraud after blasting his way into a sealed cavity, in 1837. This outrageous act of fraud has 'mucked-up' our understanding of these monuments to this very day, IMHO. (See the late authors Z. Sitchin's "Stairway to Heaven," Chapter entitled "Forging the Pharaoh's Name." Also The late Phillip Coppens, "Murder and forgery inside the Great Pyramid?" As found online; both provide in-depth perspective on this travesty). The ten items offered above, are but the tip of a vast iceberg of information concerning this subject; the list of incongruous anomalies and found revelations, could go on for several pages. And now we must add the very real possibility that a primary function of this last existing 'wonder of the ancient world', may have been a cleverly designed source of (free) power or energy as well? It is exciting and boggles the mind, but don't expect mainstream, conventional Egyptology to climb on board any of this any time soon. They are content to believe the lie about Khufu. They are loath to admit that Victorian era antiquarians may have mislead those extant institutions of higher learning for fame and profit. A legacy that muddles the picture and hampers a fresh perspective. For me personally, after all the books I've read on this particular subject; I have come to the conclusion that we are dealing with something far older than we dare imagine. A multi-faceted and purpose built structure, designed by a culture seemingly far brighter than we think we are. A structure (including others on the Giza plateau) that are so 'hoary with age' that they were inherited and, Here's the key, "repurposed" over time by younger civilizations who had forgotten the true genesis of these structures, or who the original builders might have been? These later cultures tried their best to copy these pyramids, and mostly failed to execute such lasting edifices. Hopefully one day we will learn who really built these Giza pyramids, we may never fully comprehend how. For as advanced as we "think" we are, those answers still elude us.In my mind the notion of a "Power Plant" built with machine precision, is not too much of a stretch of ones imagination. Even if this isn't the case, and its intended or inherent purpose was something else altogether; I think many would agree that the Great Pyramid is of a much older provenance, regardless of what mainstream Egyptology (including a shady character named Zawi Hawass) would have us believe. As for Khufu (aka Cheops) being the commissioning pharaoh of this massive and enigmatic undertaking; there is very little, if not suspect or contradictory evidence that he was indeed the guy that said "let it be built." However the evidence (if one is open to it) would suggest that Khufu did, in fact "inherit" the Great Pyramid, which to my thinking is much more plausible.Mind you this was a culture who venerated their esteemed pharaohs with cyclopean statues and yet we find but just one statue of Khufu (now in the Cairo museum) which stands a mighty 3 inches tall! Yeah that makes sense; are we to believe he used up all his "pharaoh monument points" on the Great Pyramid? Sure, that must be what happened. I can just see Biff thumping on Marty's dad's head now, as he shouts; "Wake Up Mcfly!"Perhaps we are the ones that need to "Wake UP" to the true heritage and legacy of our ancient ancestors. Taken collectively, all the cyclopean, monolithic and enigmatic stone structures found all over this planet, it is increasingly clear that we are missing something profound and wondrous about our very ancient, and un-doubtfully 'pre-cataclysmic' past.Read Mr. Dunn's book and decide for yourself. I think you will find that his thesis is very credible, extremely astute and helps to explain some very unusual design features within this enigmatic structure. His book is well written, captivating and hard to put down.

Enjoyed a refreshing look at the remains of ancient Egypt by a qualified engineer. His evidence for construction with advanced methods is interesting, observable, and logical. If our civilization had taken Tesla's research seriously instead of our oil-based, greed-motivated combustion economy, our engineers may developed other methods of generating electricity. Then again, modern Egypt and the Middle East wouldn't have sold any oil.To paraphrase Arthur C Clark:If a scientist states that something is possible, it's almost certainly right. If a scientist states that something is impossible, it's probably wrong. The only way of finding the possible is to go past the impossible.Advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Since I have a bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering and am now retired, I found Chris Dunn's theory to be particularly interesting. I know from my own shop experience just how difficult it truly is to repeat high tolerance work on even small, as in what you can hold in the palm of your hand, parts much less something the size of the King's Chamber. And since one of my main functions was chief estimator for putting a price to this kind of work, I also have a pretty good handle on how much work like this costs. So, to suggest that the ancients would put this kind of effort, and cost, into a mere burial chamber is ludicrous, at best. So, if the Giza complex was not built as a burial complex, then what the heck was it built for? And why? And what, other than a finely tuned and superbly crafted machine, would require such an incredible level of high tolerance work and more importantly, repeatable high tolerance work, done over and over and over again. In my opinion, Chris Dunn's work is truly an amazing discovery as well as a masterful piece of detective work. Truly Amazing.

This exploration of the Great Pyramid at Giza is absolutely astonishing. Of the hundred of books I have read in the "fringe" genre, this is definitely one of the very best. Christopher Dunn demonstrates how precision machining was used to create many of the artifacts in and around the pyramid--techniques that rival (and often surpass) those employed today. Dunn expertly shows how the notion of slave labor working with copper chisels and ropes to create these artifacts is simply absurd. A veteran engineer himself, Dunn adroitly presents one of the most compelling and intriguing theories about what the pyramids were (probably) actually for: mass energy production and distribution. This book will literally change everything you know about the ancient past. An absolutely incredible read!
