There were so many amazing anecdotes in this book about a tragic plane crash. Most of us fly, and who doesn't think about what a crash must be like? Well, this satisfied my curiosity, and more. This is a story of heroism and tragedy and humanity. I am really glad I read it. But it fell short in some ways. Parts were confusing, with the author shifting unclearly among people and places and times. The book seemed stretched out with so much on the cause of the crash, with more technical info than I needed. The amount of time dealing with corpses seemed excessive, too. I skimmed through some of those parts, and slowed down for the parts about the people involved - both the crew and passengers. In spite if its flaws, I still recommend this book. It was both sad and life affirming.
The story of Flight 232, its passengers, crew, helpers and volunteers on the ground is riveting, horrific and meticulously researched. It was fascinating reading, but it would have been less aggravating if the author had used a more linear outline. As it stands, there were times when I felt like ripping my hair out as we sporadically jumped from one narrative to something completely different. Sometimes I would lose the thread of the story of a person before Mr. onzales finished describing titanium and its drawbacks and got back to the person I had been wondering about.
I really enjoyed this book and didn't mind the way the story was told, going back and forth in time. I was able to follow it just fine. Like most crashes, it was an unfortunate confluence of events that brought down the plane down. There was enough technical detail (meat) to make me happy and by weaving in physical descriptions and personal stories of the survivors and the not-so-fortunate, it made this event "real." There are some amazing things that happened that will take your breath (such as two people in same row dying instantly, and third person in row walking away without a scratch) and some really sad things, too. How the disaster scene was processed was an eye opener. The fact that all the pilots survived in the rubble/bubble of a sheared-off cockpit is unbelievable. Only through a combination of teamwork, experience/skill and sheer strength of will from the entire crew did anyone survive this crash.
The Kindle version of Laurence Gonzales' work 'Flight 232' did not show many of the diagrams and images found in the print version. This seems to be far too common, but as long as editors find no hurt in it, this will not change. I, as a reviewer, am part of that problem. I should give it one star, and demand better editing. But the work that Gonzales poured into the book would be far too badly slighted; even with omissions it deserves five stars!I grew up some distance west of Sioux City, surrounded by Nebraska. A trip to Sioux City was a rare excitement, and Gonzales skillfully brings to memory much of the terrain, the businesses, the hills and the people from my 'then' to his 'now' in a most human manner. As a Nebraska-based charter pilot and flight instructor in the early 1980s, I made as much use of Sioux City airport (SUX) as I could to benefit my otherwise agrarian students and customers. The chain link fence so familiar to those repeatedly watching Flight 232 tumble into flaming wreckage on the wide expanse of airfield was earlier familiar to me as I had stood there waiting for passengers, or being interviewed by local news media when the air traffic controllers left their posts for more pay, better equipment, and better working conditions. I froze. I sweltered.I froze again when reading Laurence Gonzales' account of the accident; those minor details in individuals' lives on which their futures hinge leading up to the accident, and those minute-exploding, week-compressing instant eternities that follow. The flight 232 crash had been personal to me because it happened in my playground. Laurence Gonzales has made it even more so by the simple (??!!) expedient of bringing me face-to-face with so many people involved in so many ways. And they continue to be! Thank you, Laurence Gonzales! Thank you!!
This book addressed more aspects associated with an airplane crash than any other book I’ve read.Because more people survived the crash (185) than died in the crash (111) -- and because the crash didn’t occur until 45 minutes after the tail engine failed catastrophically-- the book was able to talk about the thoughts and emotions of several of the survivorsBecause the crash occurred at an airport and with advanced warning -- so that there were able to be many rescuers available and in a position to provide immediate assistance -- the book was also able to talk about the thoughts and emotions of the rescuers as they saw death and destruction -- and, almost miraculously, SURVIVORS – all around them.So the author was able to cover the human drama of the crash – something often impossible to know about (though perhaps speculated upon) in other fatal airline crashes. The book also covers the human and technical challenges associated with immediate disaster response, triage, next-day efforts, body identification efforts, final cleanup around the accident site and accident investigation efforts. (I found the autopsy techniques especially surprising and grim. But, as the book explained, identifying the dead as quickly as possible was considered a priority.)Finally, given the root cause of the accident was an engine failure, the development of that engine’s flawed component was also covered. All the above topics are knitted together in such a way as to keep the reader’s interest and attention. The book never bogged down in too much detail or for too long on any topic.
