Review

“Splendidly assembled . . . familiar, funny, cranky . . . chronicling [Vonnegut’s] life in real time.”—Kurt Andersen, The New York Times Book Review   “[This collection is] by turns hilarious, heartbreaking and mundane. . . . Vonnegut himself is a near-perfect example of the same flawed, wonderful humanity that he loved and despaired over his entire life.”—NPR   “Congenial, whimsical and often insightful missives . . . one of [Vonnegut’s] very best.”—Newsday   “Letters’ greatest gift is the gift of all such anthologies: It humanizes an icon. . . . The fallibility and kindness of the real person shine through clearer in his more personal writing, separating the author from the oeuvre in a way that makes both richer.”—The A.V. Club“There are authors we admire or envy, but there are just a few we really, really love, and Vonnegut is one of them.”—The Washington Post“These letters display all the hallmarks of Vonnegut’s fiction—smart, hilarious and heartbreaking.”—The New York Times Book Review“Smart, funny, and very compassionate. Reading this is a must for fans of the author.”—The Christian Science Monitor“Old correspondence from even famous writers can be a bore, but not Vonnegut’s. He was always at his best when adopting an intimate, down-to-earth tone, and the same animating force that made him a brilliant storyteller is evident again and again in these letters. . . . This is a frank and funny book, offering rich insights into Vonnegut’s character and career.”—The Dallas Morning News “This miraculous volume of selected letters provides a moving and revelatory portrait of the famed author of Slaughterhouse-Five and Cat’s Cradle. . . . Fans will find the collection as spellbinding as Vonnegut’s best novels, and casual readers will discover letters as splendid in their own way as those of Keats.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)  “A literary treasure . . . this collection of letters—many of which have never been published—rightly can be viewed as the autobiography Vonnegut never wrote.”—The Oklahoman“[An] intimate, far-ranging monologue by one of the 20th century’s funniest, sharpest, darkest minds . . .  it’s difficult not to marvel at Vonnegut’s depth, warmth and wit. . . . Together, [the letters] give a comprehensive sketch of his personality. They show who he was and who he became.”—The Kansas City Star “[Reveals] Vonnegut’s passions, annoyances, loves, losses, mind and heart . . . The letters stand alone—and stand tall, indeed. . . . Vonnegut’s most human of hearts beats on every page.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “Bearing all the canny observations and sardonic witticisms that distinguished his most famous works [the letters reveal] fascinating insights into Vonnegut’s private thoughts and inspirations. . . . This is a volume fans will treasure.”—Booklist “As these remarkable letters reveal, [Vonnegut] mixes hard-edged ideas with the buoyancy of imagination and humor. His best work makes us both gasp and laugh—wishing the fire from the Roman candle would never end.”—The Plain Dealer“Letters mirrors some of Vonnegut’s best fiction . . .  wry, witty, and eminently quotable. Perhaps more importantly, his letters reflect a genuineness and humanity that always lived just beneath the surface of Vonnegut’s fiction.”—The Financialist “Wit, aphorism, charm, wisdom and joshery abound here. . . . Vonnegut’s voice was as unique as his art. It is ominpresent here.”—Buffalo News“Everything that’s familiar in [Vonnegut's] fiction is in the letters—he’s funny, caustic, sentimental, profound, melancholy, angry, and always himself.”—The Oregonian “Tirelessly compiling letters and manuscripts from over seven decades of correspondence with his mentors, publishers, and even a school board director who banned his works, Wakefield finally gives the reader a sense of Vonnegut’s life without time travel or aliens to mystify and universalize his emotions. . . . Vonnegut is stripped of any possible self-promotion and his true affection and unselfishness shows. . . . a deep and true portrayal.”—The Daily Californian “At last: the Vonnegut book readers of the late modern master have been waiting for. . . . It’s his voice again, live as ever, clear and unvarnished, with the pop and crackle of a hardwood fire on an Autumn night. . . . For those of us that miss Kurt Vonnegut, it makes this collection a gift. Pick up this book, it’s like having him by your side.”—NUVOFrom the Hardcover edition.

Perhaps I am wearing rose colored glasses when I read this, with KV being my favorite author, but this book will show you how the man thought throughout the decades in a way that no biographer can ever capture. His letters flourish with wit, humor, insecurity, grandiose notions, and indignation. He outlines his struggles to become a literary giant, while not understanding how he achieved this title. You actually can picture him at the typewriter and share in the "mood of the moment" of his thoughts, written to a wide variety of people through the 60 years that this testaments span.As a true fan of his literature, you won't be sorry for this purchase as you revisit books long past, and my guess is that after reading this you will be dusting off Breakfast of Champions and Cat's Cradle to fully understand what you have just enjoyed reading. Finally you will receive a sense of American history and where the world was, is and is perhaps heading towards. Just loved it and snorted this book up like a cocaine addict.5 stars.

It's rare that a book's introduction makes me speak out loud while reading. Don't get me wrong. I wasn't reading aloud. I just found myself saying "Wow" and "Huh!" and "I didn't know that!" out loud, to myself, as I read this beautiful book. As an artist, I found the cover photo and art and even the fonts of the chapter headings both stunning and a fond visit back to the Seventies. But as a reader, and a passionate re-reader of writers I love, I was intrigued and fascinated by the introduction- written with passionate restraint by Dan Wakefield.Honestly? I rarely read more than one page of book introductions, as they usually reveal more about the writer of the Introduction than the person the Introducer is introducing. But this is happily not the case with Dan Wakefield. I love Wakefield's books, especially "Expect A Miracle" and "Spiritually Incorrect." Actually, now that I think about it, I probably only began to read this Introduction because it was written by Dan Wakefield! His clear, concise and empathetic prose informed me deeply about Kurt Vonnegut and his influences, his family and his artistic struggles to have his iconic and iconoclastic voice published and read.In fact, a unique and welcome addition to this book is the introduction of each era of letters- which smartly and helpfully places us in the context of Vonnegut's life when he wrote the letters and to whom he was writing. It's such a simple technique but begs the question of why this isn't done more with published letters of notable people... and in this book the chapter introductions serve to create more comprehension of Vonnegut's life and how he dealt with family, friends, associates, success and disappointment. Not only did I feel I was learning so much more about Vonnegut, in almost a biographical way, but this book served to make me want to hunt down a biography of Vonnegut-- but only if it's as well written as this one.The mark of a good book is one that inspires me to read more. Kurt Vonnegut's Letters not only makes me want to read more Vonnegut but it also makes me want to go back and re-read my treasured Dan Wakefield books.Great winter read. Stay inside, get cozy on a couch under a blanket and disappear into the mind of a great man as commemorated by another great man.

I'm a big Vonnegut fun and even visited the KV Library in Indianapolis so anything he writes is going to be a joy for me. Some of his letters are simply wonderful where he writes about how any work of art is one half of the conversation (what the artist said) and the other half is what the observer says. Some letters are stinging and others witty. There are also a few others that you might not have the right amount of background to fully appreciate (sort of like the old joke...."you had to be there"). He professed no love for his former son-in-law, Geraldo Rivera and the struggles of keeping a marriage together and with wanting to be closer to his children. He writes to people about book banning and you get more insight into what he was thinking at the time of some of his work. It is a relatively quick read and I'd recommend it to fans of KV.

We Learn Nothing: Essays, by Tim Kreider

Review

"Tim Kreider's writing is heartbreaking, brutal and hilarious—usually at the same time. He can do in a few pages what I need several hours of screen time and tens of millions to accomplish. And he does it better. Come to think of it, I'd rather not do a blurb. I am beginning to feel bad about myself." (Judd Apatow)"A remarkable collection . . . I found myself nodding in agreement and wondering how [Tim Kreider] could so consistently express my feelings, and express them so much better than I ever could." (Nancy Pearl NPR.org)“In a political atmosphere as angry as this, [Kreider's] oblique, self-deprecating commentary may be the only angle to which party loyalists on either side are likely to respond. We Learn Nothing should be their required reading.” (Willamette Week (Portland, Ore.))“Kreider is as compelling a writer as he is a visual satirist. His essays tend toward the ‘elegiac,’ as he puts it—something that cannot be said of his cartoons—but the same delightfully brutal honesty underlies both. Kreider’s descriptions are often simultaneously surprising and resonant . . . self-effacing and funny.” (City Paper (Baltimore))“Amazing . . . Any thinking person with a sense of humor will find We Learn Nothing provocative and delightful, reminiscent, in varying ways, of David Foster Wallace, James Thurber, David Sedaris, and Susan Sontag.” (Jennifer Finney Boylan author of She’s Not There)“Kreider is a superb essayist, a funny and fluent storyteller who wears his cultural literacy lightly . . . To read “The Creature Walks Among Us,” “The Czar’s Daughter,” “Escape from Pony Island,” or “An Insult to the Brain” is to appreciate a mordant but affectionate observer of life’s rich pageant, and a craftsman who almost never puts a word wrong.” (Johns Hopkins Magazine)“Kreider locates the right simile and the pith of situations as he carefully catalogues humanity’s inventive and manifold ways of failing.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“Earnest, well-turned personal essays about screw-ups without an ounce of sanctimony—a tough trick.” (Kirkus Reviews)"Tim Kreider may be the most subversive soul in America and his subversions—by turns public and intimate, political and cultural—are just what our weary, mixed-up nation needs. The essays in We Learn Nothing are for anybody who believes it's high time for some answers, damn it." (Richard Russo Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Empire Falls)"Whether he is expressing himself in highly original cartoons that are hilarious visual poems, or in prose that exposes our self-delusions by the way he probes his own experience with candor, Tim Kreider is a writer-artist who brilliantly understands that every humorist at his best is a liberator. Because he is irreverent, makes us laugh, ruffles the feathers of the pretentious and the pompous, and keeps us honest, We Learn Nothing is a pleasure from its first page to the last." (Charles Johnson bestselling author of Middle Passage)

#57,590 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I bought this book after reading an essay("The Busy Trap")by this author in the New York Times online. I had never heard of Tim Kreider before, but this essay was so topical, so insightful, so on-target that I simply had to see what else he had to say.I was a little hesitant because it became clear after a bit of research that Kreider's politics and mine were pretty far out of sync. (Not that I mind competing viewpoints, I just don't like the whole bashing thing.) I need not have worried. Unlike much of Kreider's work of the George W. Bush era, which consistently savaged all things Republican, We Learn Nothing is not overtly political. Each essay is unique, highly original, wistful, soul-baring, poignant, and achingly human. Although a naturally passionate lefty partisan, Kreider is, to his immense credit, rigorously intellectually honest and reflexively fair throughout this latest collection. He is unsparingly critical of himself and those with whom he aligns, and gracious and empathetic to his philosophical opposites. It feels a little like an act of atonement, as though Kreider is saying: Sorry I got a little carried away there. See, I'm much better now.I cannot recall ever having read an author so preternaturally incisive, so aware, so adept at performing what amounts to a full monty of the soul without seeming self-indulgent. Kreider is relentlessly introspective and profoundly self-aware. Yet this is no act of mere navel-gazing. Above all, We Learn Nothing is the work of a sensitive, piercing intelligence trying to make sense of the world by first making sense of itself. This book should be required reading for anyone trying to come to terms with this messy, confusing, brutal, beautiful, tragic, hilarious, stupid, fragile thing we call life. Scratch that: This book should be required reading, period. After reading this book I thought, I would love to spend an afternoon with this guy over beers, discussing anything and everything.

It's easy to compare a book like this to the works of a host of other contemporary essayists (Sedaris, et al), but after the second or third essay I realized Kreider's voice is unique: he tells stories, often with the barest of details, in a way that doesn't expose himself too much and/or doesn't exploit someone else in the process. Which is to say, he has written a book that is heart-breaking, charming, edge-of-your-seat suspenseful (hoping that he will offer up all the gory details) and -- even though I hate this word when used to describe writing -- generous. Kreider is a masterful storyteller, and I can't recall the last time I enjoyed a book of essays this much. The stories themselves cover a lot of terrain: dysfunctional family members, transgendered friends, near death experiences, relationships; but always from the perspective of someone who's madly in love with his friends and family, warts and all. Kreider exposes the ugly/beautiful truth of what it means to be human in the most honest, thoughtful, endearing and entertaining way.Highly, highly recommended.

Typically, I judge the worth of a book by how badly I wish I had written it.I judge this book very favorably.I had never heard of Tim Kreider. It turns out that he is a cartoonist. The book is peppered with his drawings. They were fine (hopefully he never reads this review). The writing, however, was much more than fine.In this collection of essays, he says all of the things that I am way too cowardly to. Do you ever feel like most of your life is wasted being “busy”? If you don’t, then “Lazy: A Manifesto” might cause you an existential crisis.Ever wondered what it feels like when a close friend has an abrupt and totally unexpected sex change? I hadn’t, but in “Chutes and Candyland” Kreider answered all of the questions I didn’t know I had.Ever been abandoned by a childhood friend – as a forty year-old man? I’m not forty yet, but after reading “The Anti-Kreider Club” now I know what to expect.Ever had a brush with death that changed your entier outlook on life – for about a week? Actually, I have. My wound was less dramatic than Kreider’s, but the subsequent emotional arc of “The Reprieve” was very much the same. This world is full of people. Some of them have very different opinions than I do. Some of them have very similar ones. Every once in a while, I come across a person who not only shares my opinions, but also articulates them more perfectly than I ever could. Tim Kreider is one of those people. Did I learn anything from his book? Maybe. Maybe not. Only time will tell.At the very least, I know that I resonated with every word.

It's not really a book but a printout of the online manual. I am not a big fan of online reading so for me it's worth the money. Don't expect more than what you get online for free though. Also, this text is outdated (Ibelieve from 2001 or 2002) so the latest GDB version will likely have more features than what is listed here

This is the best way to learn gdb, either as a reference or as a study material. It covers a lot.gdb is the most used debugger and this book covers what you need no matterwhat you want to do.gdb is used on many platforms, ranging from vxworks, windows, mac, gnu/linux, unix, etc. gdb is the most powerful debugger and thereforea book like this is a must because no gui frontend gives you full control

I was looking for information on cross-platform debugging. This manual provides adequate information. A printed manual is sometime helpful when you are so tired looking at the over crowded screen. Good reference! If you are trying to learn the machanism of debugging, you have to find some other book.

Every serious programmer knows how invaluable the GNU debugger GDB for his or her work. Although, the content of this GDB manual is freely available, I find it very handy to have a hard copy. It is not surprising that the manual is well written because it has been revised many times by many developers of the open source community.

This is the best book in the market for gdb. It is full of details and examples, if you would take time to read it.The INDEX at the end of the book is very well kept. There are many chapters for newbies and the illustrated examples are simple and easy to follow. There are also lots of deep and gory details if you need them.

Even though this entire book is available online, I find it useful to own it. Starts with a simple example, which is my favorite way of getting started.

Lets see if Amazon.com allows the link. You have to respectthe wishes of a man like Richard Stallman.

I grew up listening to JFK, but after 50+ years it's nice to be able to read the words I heard spoken, and a lot more that I didn't. Kennedy's words were not only for the generation, they're for the ages, and perhaps even more pertinent today, than they were then. The candidates for President in 2016 would do well to read Kennedy's thoughts on The Presidency, and what it represents not only to the people of the United States, but the world. His words are inspiring, but at the same time can cause the reader to despair of the current state of politics, and each political party's determination to have everything their way, or allow nothing, leaving the America people with dysfunctional government at every level. If you want to read about one man's vision of what government by the people, for the people, and of the people can be, read Kennedy!

There was a particular speech he gave on our all being born to this planet and this book helped me find it. Thank you! This is a book to cherish. He was such a gifted writer. People today don't know the extent of his abilities.

JFK is always impressive, he is hard not to like. JFK is gone and Mr. Sorenson, speech writer for JFK, could have taken all the credit. Instead, Mr. Sorenson gave all the credit to JFK, refreshing honest. In Mr. Sorensons book, he included many speeches of JFK. I have no idea what he did not include.I leave that to experts on JFK, which I am not. What I can say is this is a great book, full of JFK words. Great book!

This book was a great read, written by inspirational men. I wish we had leaders today with the vision of JFK.

it's a great book. i've read many times before i bought but had to have it on my shelf.

Between the minds of Ted Sorensen and JFK — how can you lose? I try to read one section daily.

Always interesting to read a speech you've seen delivered... A completely different experience. Having gone from a master orator like President Obama to Trump is a good example.

Important to read and have. This is the man we so needed and lost. Read the speeches and you'll see why he was a great President.
