This is a very good book. I've had other travel books on Nicaragua and Central America and this is, by far, the best. I also found it to be very accurate. I was quite surprised. Outstanding.

Joshua Berman & Randy Wood have not left a pueblo unexplored nor a beach missed. IF you are going visit only Nicaragua, this is the guide to take with you. If, perchance, you will visit other countries as well, then my first choice is "Footprint's Cental America Handbook"Every city, town and beach I visited in Nicaragua was covered. I found their recommendations for accommodations, food and other service in the guide to be "right on". In our technology connected world the authors have the web addresses and/or email addresses for most hotels (not the hostels). Great.Very important for those planning to study Spanish in Nicaragua, this guide has a great rundown of most of the schools in various cities. This section is a must read before selecting a school (I speak from experience).I do need to point out the poetic license that is taken by the authors. The authors describing place with magniloquent words, that when the guide is held up to the reality of the place it is not half as wonderful as they say. Their writing on Leon is a great example. They write that being in Leon can give you an "exotic feeling" like the "one gets by walking down the cobble stone streets by colonial buildings". If and when you visit Leon you will be there a long, long time looking for that feeling and that street of cobbled stones. Maybe they meant "asphalt streets with pot holes".Although the guide is copyrighted 2003 I found that information regarding new hotels, restaurants and bars stopped at or around 2000. However, the authors introduction section (economy, government etc.) is through 2001. Do note, the upper priced hotels (over $100) only get the mention of their nameAnd how do you make a very good guide - GREAT!? Well, more maps and better maps, especially of Managua, would be a great place to start. The guide has information about many sites of interest with corresponding maps to help you navigate. Also, there is NO section that recommends books or videos. There is no list of foreign embassies to help a traveler locate their embassy in Managua. Finally, the crime is rising in Managua, but only in Managua, and the guide does not address this.These things said, I still strongly recommend this book. This guide and the excellent 'In Focus - Nicaragua' (see my review) should be in your hand before you go.

The above title says it all. I'm an experienced world traveler and have used a number of different guidebook series in many different countries and regions, including Lonely Planet, Let's Go, Moon, and Rick Steves'. The country-specific Moon Handbooks for Central America are hands-down the most superior guidebooks I have ever used. They are written by people who have lived in the countries and know about all kinds of hidden treasures that aren't mentioned in other guidebooks, and the information tends to be much more in-depth than in other guidebooks I've used. I won't go on since the other reviewers cover the high points of Moon's Nicaragua Handbook. All I can say is if you're going to Nicaragua, get this guidbook! You won't be disappointed.

I used to use the Lonely Planet Guidebooks for my travels in Central America. As good as they are, Josh Berman and Randy Wood's "Moon Handbooks: Nicaragua" is the class of the field.The two have done an excellent job of researching, exploring almost every nook and cranny of this amazing country. It is very thorough and factually correct.Beyond that, it is written with great respect for the land and its people, giving them the respect they deserve. They tell of the heroic struggle the Nicaraguans pass through every day, just to survive--and survive they do. The authors give the reader ample information the civic self-help organizations the people have created for themselves and their neighbors--and how to volunteer to help.If you want to know the real Nicaragua, buy this book.

This is not only the best guidebook for Nicaragua, this is the best guidebook, bar none, of any I have ever read for any location on the planet(and I've read lots). Berman and Wood have not only done their homework about where to go, they've included well-written segments on regional history, geography, culture, language, people-watching, environmental concerns, infrastructure availability, volunteer opportunities in addition to very well documented sources with contact information when appropriate. I have never read a guidebook with such complete information (and clearly-understood, clever writing) until this one. Even if you don't plan on travelling to Nicaragua, this book is highly recommended reading.

This is one of the most gripping real-life stories in the commercial aviation field. National Geographic also did an excellent documentary of the event. The actual radio transmissions can be found on the net, and they are spine-tingling. The fact that these three Fed Ex pilots survived this horrific ordeal (albeit with life-altering injuries) is a miracle in itself. That they also had the wherewithal and piloting skills to stop this madman from turning Memphis into a nightmare scene of death and destruction is, in my view, super-human. Highly recommended.

These heroes should be better known! But probably because no one actually died, they are not well known today. But their actions were truly heroic. I’m glad at least they did receive a reward for their heroism - they sure did deserve it!Read this good account of the perilous event, from which they barely came out alive. It’s amazing how they worked together in spite of their serious injuries, successfully subduing their formidable attacker and safely landing the plane. And their subsequent recovery from the injuries is also worth reading.Also along with this book, watch the National Geographic episode of Air Emergency, titled “Suicide Attack”. It also gives an account of the events, including a quite accurate re-enactment. This book goes into more detail, of course, but the documentary helps to visualize it.My favorite line from both the book and the documentary:“Please confirm, do you still have the situation under control?”“Uh, sort of under control.”Which answer must have puzzled the air traffic controllor, yet it accurately sums up the situation at that time!

Great book. Plenty of detail and insightful analysis of the hijackers psyche leading up to the hijacking of the FedEx flight. The author takes time to describe and link all the major participants in this inflight drama so that the reader has a clear and fluid picture of why this event occurred; of how it occurred and and the efforts of the crew to survive once it became clear that the hijacker was out kill the flight crew and possibily many more on the ground. The book is reveting. I started it, the book oneday intending to read a few pages and put it down. I read a fourth of the book on the first day, approximately a three quarters by the second day and finished the book on the third day. Could only put it down when something pressing like work got in the way. I highly recommend this book.

Great book! I met one of the pilots this book is written about. I found out that he only lives about 20 miles from me. He also signed my book! What an amazing story of courage and skill and terror! This book is well written. My only complaint is that I wish I hadn't bought the book from "Bookmans Exchange" on Amazon. It was supposed to be "Like New" and when I received it, the book looked in "poor" shape, very yellowed with writing on the outside of the book. It was NOT AT ALL "Like New" as Bookmans Exchange had said. Don't buy from them. However the book is great and even better because now I know one of the pilots that it was written about. They have a terrifying, captivating story to tell. They are blessed to be alive after what happened to them! Buy the book from a reputable dealer on Amazon.

I am a pilot and am absolutely loving how this book is written. It is riveting, detailed, and at points heart wrenching. The author does a great job of appropriately explaining pilot jargon.

Gripping story, excellently told. Thanks to the brave FedEx pilots who fought a crazed man while saving themselves and potentially diverting a national disaster. Highly recommend.

Having a degree in Marine Biology, I found some of the information in the book to be a bit of "common sense"..... Or so I thought. But when I began teaching college biology to nonmajors, I realized that this book can really light those students up. Blue Mind really got some of my students excited about the oceans and ecology, engaged at greater levels with the endocrine system and hormones, gave them a better idea of anatomy and physiology, and most importantly, I think, showed my students that science is relevant NOW, and to them. Dr. Nichols is a great example of a scientist and advocate to a generation of young adults who are just waiting for his messages!

I always knew there was something special about living on an island, surrounded by the calming sounds of lapping waves. This book explains it.Nichols writes that our brains are hardwired to react positively to water. He combines water science and neuroscience to show exactly that. He defines the “blue mind” as a mildly meditative state characterized by calm, peacefulness, unity, and a sense of general happiness and satisfaction with life. It is inspired by water and the sensations associated with it. “...[W]ater provides the most profound shortcut to happiness out there.”He explores our emotional ties to water, explains the technology of brain study, contemplates what happiness is and how it is evaluated, looks at the affect of the color blue and the other sensations of water. He explores the recreational use of water and the health benefits of water, including its therapeutic use for PTSD, drug addiction and autism. He explains the Red Mind and the Gray Mind – enlightening.Blue Mind is not a dry science book. Nichols includes lots of stories as examples of his thesis. I stayed up all night to read this breathtaking, informative and inspirational book about the Birmingham Children's March in Birmingham, Alabama. This beautifully written and photographed book tells the story of the 4,000 children who integrated Birmingham after the adults, feeling frightened of violence and probable loss of livelihoods, stopped protesting with Dr. Martin King Jr. and other clergy. Facing violence, expulsion from school, threats to their parents lives, and the killing of 4 little girls from a bomb planted at church by white supremacists, the children of Birmingham continued to march and protest until they won significant concessions from Bull Conner and the white power structure. It also frankly discusses the use of non-violent and violent tactics used by the Black community to protect themselves, a topic that is not often discussed. This book for older children, teens and adults inspires us to fight for what is right, and gives us courage for the journey.

Oscar Wilde supposedly said, "Any fool can make history, but it takes genius to write it." While I don't necessarily agree with the first part, the second part absolutely rings true. After all, how do you make a story compelling when everyone already knows how it ends? Cynthia Levinson has proven her genius here, because she accomplishes that and so much more in WE'VE GOT A JOB.By anchoring the events surrounding the 1963 Birmingham Children's March in the personal narratives of four of its direct participants, Levinson puts readers on the ground in Birmingham. We may know the final outcome, but we have no idea how we're ever going to get there, and this day-by-day account of the incremental progress--and setbacks--will keep readers turning the pages to find out what happened next. This is a nonfiction book with as much drama and pacing as THE HUNGER GAMES. I literally couldn't put it down, except for when I became too teary-eyed to continue reading, which happened often.There is so much to love about this book, but I think my favorite thing about it is how Levinson humanizes everyone involved. It's not as much a movement or an event as it is individuals, each with his or her own motivations, working with or against each other. I loved reading that even the revered leaders (for both sides of the issue) were hardly ever in agreement. Everyone involved was taking a chance, a risk, a guess as to what was going to work--or not. They were all fighting for what they believed in, each in his or her own unique way. Nothing was simple. Nothing was clear.I wholeheartedly think this book should be in every library, in every classroom, and in every home in America for its history as well as for its message for the future. Buy it, read it, recommend it, share it.The book also includes a table of contents, author's note, timeline, map, acknowledgements, extensive source notes, bibliography (recommended resources), photo credits, and a detailed index. Levinson also has additional info, lesson plans, discussion questions, curriculum guides, and more on her website ([...]).

Levinson has done an incredible job with this book. Not only does she give an account of the events leading up to and including the Children's March but she merges comments from some of the participants. This is how narrative nonfiction should be done. The book is beautifully organized with complementary photographs. I almost felt like I was there while reading this book.I think what makes this account so powerful is the sense of immediacy that Levinson has created. It felt like it was happening as I was reading about it rather than almost fifty years ago. It was amazing to read about the courage of the children who participate, ages 9 to 18 with a few adults mixed in. The story in the prologue starts the book off with a bang. The idea of a nine-year-old child telling her parents that she wants to go to jail hit me hard. The descriptions of hundreds of children crammed into jail cells meant to hold many fewer occupants was also full of impact. I think the part though that really got me was when fire hoses were turned on the marchers. Clearly, the author has done her research, but more than that, she has made it understandable for the young reader.I highly, highly recommend this book for any reader who wants to see the power of unity or the power of children to make a difference. This would be a great book to use in teaching about civil rights or just plain courage.

This is a wonderful book filled with amazing photographs and the stories of the countless number of heroines and heros of the Civil Rights movement. I bought this book to teach my grandchildren about the brave people who decided “enough was enough!”

I really enjoyed reading this non-fiction book. I was hooked since page one, thinking it was like a short text book,since it's full of information. I strongly believe that this book should be read by every generation so that we can fully understand the events that led to the signing of the Civil Rights Act in 1964. All I can say this book is it is a must read for everyone! As a future educator, I plan to keep this book available for my students. Personally I was astonished to read about childrend and teenagers protesting and marching to secure their freedom. Audrey, James, Washington, and Arnetta have changed my perspective by risking their own lives to protect adults who feared loosing thier jobs, or worse, their lives.Most of the personal stories are heartbreaking, but can definitely influence, insipire and motivate future generations to prevent something like this from happening again. This is the kind of text that motivated me to persue a teaching career, so that children are able to read and re-live an important part of history, and be able to learn the truth.

We homeschool, and, as I'm not an artist myself, I was having some trouble with our art time. This book is really great. I've seen so many art books that LOOK good but don't really work in action. My daughter (age 10) opened this book and without my help began to draw some beautiful pictures that she had not been able to do before we got this book. I highly recommend it - it's like an art class without the high class fees!

My three granddaughters love to draw and I got this book to give to them. It is easy enough for them to understand and I can see the progress they are making. I've bought several drawing books from Amazon and they have all been good. In fact, some of the books I bought for my grandchildren, I ended up keeping myself because I draw, also. I haven't had time to draw in quite a few years and this is helping me to regain my skills.

Excellent book for all ages that want to explore color and how that can change the entire dynamic of your art, LOVE IT!

I purchased this book for my daughter but unfortunately it is very basic. Watson's Course in pencil sketching is a better choice.

Great introduction to art - for all ages. A perfect sequel to the Drawing book by the same author. Encourages creativity while demonstrating the basic concepts and tools.

I purchased for my 10 year old grandson. The book is written and illustrated for older children. Good subject matter on choices of color but presented by using small pictures, going asfar as to include landscapes-very detailed drawings, and vocabulary not within his age group. Expensive book at $17.95 that a child would not appreciate.
