There was much I liked about "The Book of Memory" but still it left me wanting. The message of the book is an important one -- things that we experience as children, don't understand, and can't control, can change our lives. The author is a talented writer, but the book needed stronger editing. I enjoyed some of the Shoni words, but there were so many of them that it was distracting. Many of the characters, including Memory were underdeveloped. I found it hard to believe that at age 9 when she believed her parents sold her to Lloyd, she didn't act out. She was sad, but she quickly turned to books. Not believable. Her relationship with Lloyd was not developed. Her mother's story was an important one that should have been told better. Much of the book rambles. The ending was rushed and unfinished. What really happened to Lloyd? This could have been a great book!
This will be a classic in world literature. The tragic life of an albino girl in Rhodesia, then Zimbabwe, takes on vital symbolic significance. At the core of this complex story are two important misinterpretations. And they stand in reasonably well for the deliberate blindness (on both sides) that contributed so much to Zimbabwe’s tragic degeneration under Mugabe.What makes it such a gem is the imaginative evocation of life for ordinary Zimbabweans. As an albino, Memory (that’s her name) has a certain distance from all she sees. But her feelings are real as she watches her mother’s desperation lead to the point at which she is handed over to a gentle white professor who gives her a quality education to which she responds eagerly. Then wires get crossed and she betrays her benefactor. Eventually she lands in jail, and the ramshackle justice system brings her crashing back into the ordinary life of the poor.The intersectionality feels a bit contrived, but Gappah is never heavy-handed with it. This seems to reflect her character’s emotional reserve, so that the point is not injustice but human damage and the role of misunderstanding in turning power into harm. It may never be a smash Hollywood hit, but it will be studied.One small reservation. I got used to the Shona showing up, but I still would have appreciated footnotes for the passages I really wanted to understand.
Memory was sold to Lloyd by her parents at the age of eight. The most intriguing feature of this story is that the reason for the transaction is never really explored through the bulk of the book. Memory leaves a restaurant with Lloyd leaving her parents behind after viewing an open exchange of money. She lives with him in a wonderful, beautiful life and is given every opportunity. His family becomes her family. There is never any untoward attention from Lloyd toward her. This lack of discussion is of course somewhat frustrating to the reader, but it also adds to the aura of metaphysics. As her name implies, the meaning of the situation lies with her: Memory. The setting is Zimbabwe where she has been jailed for his murder as an adult. This history is a task set for her by her defense attorneys. This then is a study in the mutable nature of memory which flows with the settings of our past. It is a lovely book with a fascinating mystery that lures the reader.While Memory is a wonder of a character, for me Lloyd is the star of the magic of this book.
I read this novel by the brilliant Zimbabwean novelist and short story writer Pettina Gappah in one day because I couldn’t put it down. It is well written, shines an important look on a situation that many outsiders aren’t aware of, and is just overall really well structured and gripping. Unlike many novels, it didn’t let me down at any points and it stuck the landing in the ending. I recommend it to anyone interested in Zimbabwe or who loves literature and I anxiously look forward to new books from one of my new favorite authors.
I did not like this book. It was exceptionally boring. It seemed like nothing happened at all. It's a relatively short novel and I was more than halfway through and all that was being discussed was the characters time in jail. I suppose some people might be interested in that but I was under the impression that the story was going to be centered around how the main character ended up where she was. In the first half there was very little mention of any of that. The second half dealt with that a bit more but by the time I got to the second half I was extremely bored and just wanted to get done so I mostly skimmed. I know how it ends. I am okay with the ending. I don't mind too much that I did so much skimming. I am donating this to the local used bookstore because maybe someone else will appreciate it more. I, personally, would not suggest this novel. It did not meet my expectations and I truly feel like I wasted my money.
Beautifully written, "The Book of Memory", by Petina Gappah, is the gripping story with enough wit (some hilarious malapropisms) to get you through the darkness. The protagonist, Memory, who has albinism, is narrating the story from a Zimbabwe prison where she is sentenced to death for the murder of the white man who "bought" her from her parents. Trust me, that's all you need to know about the plot of this fast-paced novel that will stay with you long after the last page has turned.
I had never heard of Petina Gappah before, and as she unfolds the tale of Memory, her language, descriptions, and observations of the ways we recall the past just dazzled me. She is a sophisticated writer, with literary allusions and references to figures of Rhodesian/Zimbabwan history with splashes of native language (Shona?) tossed in. Such an enjoyable read. I immediately bought her book of short stories and anticipate her next work. I may even reread The Book of Memory, as there's so much one picks up on a second read.
The author does a good job of including historical facts in this fictional book, for example strategic location of certain suburbs in Harare. I also loved how humor was embeded in normal conversations among the prisoners. Look forward to more books by this author.
