This book seems like a great source until you get down to the nitty gritty and start building. I am in the middle of building "The Poultry Farmer" and while the concept and the building materials are sturdy there are entire sections of instructions missing as well as material lists. I'm having to improvise to not waste time and money. It's like this book was written without being edited or checked for errors. If you are an experienced carpenter you can fill in the blanks but I would not recommend this book for the average joe.
This is a worthless book full of complicated instructions that don't make any sense. Buy a coop for dummies book, you're gonna thank me.
We built the Chicken Fun Run (first design in the book), but we found a number of errors and omissions in terms of the cuts, measurements, and details in the instructions. If you are an experienced carpenter, this book does have some nice ideas, but you really need to use this book as an idea starter, rather than a step-by-step guide. If you are not an experienced carpenter, get detailed plans online or buy a coop (or some other structure and modify it). Also, the coop designs in this book are really not suitable for hot climates - the designs are for colder weather coops.
Found a good plan for 5 chickens, but just wish there was more specific data about designs, materials and dimensions. Had to figure many things out on my own
Firstly I have no experience building anything before, (I am a woman building this with my MIL and two toddlers.) I bought this book several months ago and it sat around before I got brave enough to start building the Olde Shack plan. While I am not finished with construction I have made good progress. What I can say is that the directions are not always clear, or perhaps the author expects you to have at least a little construction knowledge. The authors choice of words are confusing at times too, i.e. The author states to make the foundation from 4x4x10s and the 8 foot planks which I thought meant 2x4x8s so my foundation is now built wrong but I realized this to late. Also the materials list is very generalized, I need L backers but no idea how many is one example. I am now at construction of the roof of my coop but confused about the directions as it states to make an 8x7.5' frame to mount to the outside of the walls so that the inner beams will rest inside of the frame (this doesn't work mathematically as the constructed walls measure 7.5x8'4"). I wish the book was spelled out much simpler as I have zero experience.
Not what I hoped it would be. Nice coops, but none fit my need which is to build a coop inside my 8 by 20 run.
Lots of ideas. It helps to have some carpentry skills but the directions were detailed enough that almost anyone could build a coop.
