I am reviewing the Kindle edition of this book which currently sells for less than the price of a cup of coffee. Price alone wouldn't warrant a positive review (there's plenty of junk on sale for a dollar), but happily this is a serviceable little book for neophytes and philosophy students alike. The book has an active table of contents and is fully searchable with hyperlinks laced generously through the text referring to earlier and later chapters, as well as footnotes. The 100 philosophers are chosen judiciously (partisans can quarrel about glaring omissions and dubious inclusions, but in general choices are non-controversial) and presented more or less in chronological order. More or less, I say, because the author has thought to present the individual philosophers under general headings, so occasionally chronology bows down to conceptual structure. The headings include, for example The Presocratics; The Eleatics: The Academics; The Atomists; The Cynics; Stoics; The Skeptics; Neoplatonists ; Scholastics etc. until we reach The Existentialists; The linguistic Turn; The Postmodernists and The New Scientists (Godel, Turing, Kuhn, Quine et al.) Though these spoonfuls on each philosopher are very broad overviews, they are surprisingly useful as either quick references or refreshers. Most pleasing for me was the generous links from chapter to chapter. Let's say you are reading "Derrida" and see a reference to linguist Saussure or anthropologist Levi-Strauss. No need for wikipedia if you don't know them or grasp the reference. Just click on the names ("Saussure") and voila, your back to the chapter about him. I had fun bouncing around, and seeing these connections, particularly for authors I hadn't read for some time.As someone in the field of philosophy, I view this as one of several handy reference books in my kindle Fire. I wouldn't read it cover to cover, but from what I have read, there are no egregious errors that I noticed, so curious readers, 1st or 2nd year undergrads and even the more advanced can shell out the 99 cents with--I would bet-- no fear of buyer's remorse. A handy little e-book.

I found Philip Stokes' Philosophy: 100 Essential Thinkers to be a real gem—the writing is clear, the content substantial, and the organization precise. Serving as a brief overview of Western philosophy, Stokes' work captures meaningful snapshots of a 100 different philosophers in 382 pages—designating about three pages to each thinker. Divided into 22 sections, Philosophy: 100 Essential Thinkers categorizes each philosopher by camps (the Presocratics, the Eleatics, the Academics, the Atomists, the Cynics, the Stoics, the Sceptics, the Neoplatonists, the Christians, the Scholastics, the Age of Science, the Rationalists, the Empiricists, the Idealists, the Liberals, the Evolutionists, the Pragmatists, the Materialists, the Existentialists, the Linguistic Turn, the Postmodernists, and the New Scientists). Since a three page presentation can only serve as an introduction to a person's work, Stoke's makes every sentence count. He introduces and explains their major ideas, along with the context they lived in, who they were influenced by, and in turn who they later influenced. An important reason I chose this book is "the Linguistic Turn". In this section, capturing philosophers from the 20th century, Stokes describes thirteen philosophers—by for more than any other category. "The Linguistic Turn" describes present day, mainstream academic philosophy in America—an area of philosophy I am unfamiliar with for several reason, mostly because I have full-heartedly followed a lineage of philosophy, which we can call "Integral" or "Holistic", that has rarely entered mainstream academics. I find leaving out this lineage of integral philosophy—including thinkers such de Chardin, Grof, Wilber, Laszlo, Sheldrake, etc— to be a short-coming of the book; after Hegel, it doesn't include any of these thinkers, except for the surprising inclusions of both Bergson and Whitehead. All these integral thinkers embraced a panpsychist perspective, a major element in my life, but not following this path is precisely why I chose this book, because, like the mainstream, it ended up following a different philosophical lineage than myself—one grounded in materialism and disembodied rationality. I felt angry while reading "the Linguistic Turn", and becoming aware of the state of modern day philosophy. Up until the 20th century, what I saw reading the book was the unfolding of Western philosophy, moving from thinker to thinker—a beautiful story taken in about 80 different snapshots, each person bringing in the richness of different ideas—until we get to the logic and linguistics after Existentialism—then it all gets stale. Before this point, whether or not I agreed with each thinker of the more than 2,500 year movement, each passionately made metaphysical and social statements and authentically tried to understand themselves, the universe, and humanity—many making deeply meaningful contribution to knowledge and society. In comparison, 20th century philosophy—reduced to nothing more than meaning in language—seems like a massive detour; and arguably made no significant contribution to our culture. I had an impression of the absurdity philosophy has been reduced to in higher education, but now I know; I feel thoroughly disappointed. I am shocked what Western society has done to what I consider the most beautiful human discipline—we need to resuscitate what once was the greatest container for human knowledge and wisdom. That being said, by summarizing different pivotal thinkers that have influenced much of what we know, this book has much to offer. I believe this book is a must read for every philosopher—not because it brings an over-arching philosophical perspective like Passion of the Western Mind, or other books presenting a story of philosophy, but because it serves as a great companion to such books—since the writer delivers no philosophical perspective of his own, but simply gives a Wikipedia like description of each thinker. I have come to see that Western philosophy, as a discipline, carries a story—and includes its own myths, like that of Socrates and Galileo—and this book serves to deepen one's understanding of the characters in the play. For a long time I have wanted greater familiarity with the players we see in philosophical works, and reading a book on each person takes too long; Philosophy: 100 Essential Thinkers helps fill in some of the cracks. The only off-putting quality of the book is its large 14 size font; it makes the book seem less serious—though I am sure it was done to make the book look user friendly and accessible to the lay person. Still, the book definitely does not lack in content. Overall, it is an enjoyable read and serves as a great introduction to 100 lives—including biographical content, great works, and original ideas—that made major intellectual contributions in the evolution of Western society.

Having searched for the one book that encapsulates the history of philosphy in a chronological order, I have found thisto be the one. Each section on each philosopher summarizes their main points and allows for comparisons over theages. I would recommend this book to anyone curious in the evolution of the study of thought and how each period inhistory influenced it.

A review of 100 essential thinkers of history, with mostly notable names, and some that are little known. There are other books are similar to this one in terms of a list of essential thinkers. I think that these 100 are essential to Stokes. These thinkers are categorized based on their philosophical views. Scientists, mathematicians, and logicians are also included. Stokes explains each essential thinker's philosophy, and adds his views on each subject as well as comparisons to other philosophers. A good literary work.

This book is exactly what it claimed to be and no more. It is useful as a resource for those with a general interest in philosophy, providing a basic, and necessarily short, introduction to each of the great and complex individuals that it takes as its subjects. If one is interested in details and elaboration on this very deep subject, I would assume that one would not look to satisfy that interest by purchasing this work. Everyone interested in the area of philosophy needs a text like this as a starting point, however, and I believe this text fills its stated purpose quite well. The worldviews of the various philosophers are summarized in a very fair and relatable way that will be a great help in guiding interested parties in their further studies.

Index needs to be better. Because the book is organized in groups of top 10, the index needs to be improved. I wish I had not bought the book. It's difficult to find things, and what you do find is of such limited explanation as to almost be useless. I have 10 or 15 DK books and I've traveled to over 50 countries, and this book is almost useless.

While I have found other DK Eyewitness guides quite good, they were bigger books with in-depth coverage of cities like Vienna, Prague, and Budapest rather than a Top 10 book like this one. While this book could be useful for picking out the main sights you want to see before a trip to Mexico City, it is not really very useful once you are actually there. It is simply way too shallow in its coverage of the sights. You definitely will need another guide book during your trip. I ended up using the Lonely Planet Mexico City book together with the Mexico City chapter of Fodor's Mexico 2010 book. I barely looked at this book during the 4 days I spent in Mexico City. (I gave them each 3 stars.) Since you'll need another book any way, you can use it to pick out the best sights to see and skip this one. It's unfortunate that DK has not provided a complete Mexico City book instead of this Top 10 book.I should add that Mexico City is a great place to visit. It has great sights and great food. It is a shame that more Americans don't visit it. While it has a reputation of being polluted and dangerous, my wife and I both felt very safe and comfortable during our entire trip.

I am giving this only two stars because the print is so small I can hardly read it. If you wear cheaters to read, this is not the book for you. I give credit to this book for giving the top ten of everything. However, since I am seasoned beyond the age of being 'eagle-eyed' I am afraid I will need to bring along a large magnifying glass to see the print, maps and photos. I will now be searching for another guide book with larger print as I don't want to carry a large magnifying glass to see my guidebook pages as I explore this exciting city. Pass this one up if you don't like reading fine print.

I had three days in Mexico City, and this little guide did a good job pointing me to the key places to visit and providing background information. I would highly recommend it if you're trying to prioritize places to visit, as I was, and are not familiar with Mexico City, like me.

It is small enough to easily take with you anywhere, and as long as this is the only guide you are using it is outstanding. Provides great summaries of the top places to see in Mexico City. I found it very useful.

Beautiful guide. Well-organized and well-written. Nice photos. But: teeny little maps and no overview map, which I really missed. Oddly, no mention of Uber, which we used extensively and was quite cheap (like a 30-minute ride for $5). I'd buy it again though.

Another fine Top 10 guide. Although the web has so much info, it's nice to have a small, compact, graphic-rich guidebook in your travel bag. Highly recommended.

My all-time favorite: I give it to all my friends who travel to Mexico City. There is no better or more compact, all-encompassing guide. Great maps!

Jim Camp's philosophy on negotiating is very refreshing and indeed liberating. Coming from a sales background where management wants EVERY sales person to win EVERY sale, Jim's mindset of 'No, you do NOT need to win this particular sale' (contract, order, argument, vote, or other negotiation) is far more realistic and honest, and puts you at an advantage. The truth of the matter is you will not 'win every time' and believing you need to only creates neediness, which lessens the likelihood of success in the short-term, and cripples your effectiveness in the long-term.The mindset Jim shares is in this book is outstanding. It's contrarian, honest, compelling and different from anything I've ever read or heard on negotiation. Jim also talks (at a high level) about key aspects of his 'complete system', sharing a portion of his philosophy with stories and examples. He also shares a limited set of tools from his 'complete system'.Now here are two things that really disappointed me:1. Throughout the book the author keeps mentioning his 'complete system' for negotiating, but then never reveals it in its entirety. He only teases you with pieces of it. In the beginning of the book he gets the reader engaged, and excited about the refreshingly new content, and succeeds in making you want more. But then he does not give you all that you need to know. Rather, he makes mention over and over again about how coaching students receive his 'complete system' with the full check-list, tools and all the other details for how to really negotiate successfully.2. While this book serves as a nice introduction to what the author teaches, in reality it is a teaser to get you interested and wanting to learn more. If you want to learn the author's complete system, you have to enroll in the 'Camp Negotiating Institute' which, according to his website, starts at $4,874 for the basic course, $12,875 to become a 'Credentialed Negotiation Team Leader', another $8,000 to become a 'Credentialed Negotiation Officer/Coach', and $24,500 to enroll in all of his courses! This book really is a lead generation device to get people wanting more. To get the full details of the author's system, you need to invest thousands of dollars. Here's my answer to that: NO

This is BY FAR one of the most important books I've ever read that I wish I had learned about much sooner in my life and that I'd suggest is required reading for anyone that wants to succeed in business and in life. It's unfortunate that Jim Camp, author of this magnificent book, has passed on, but I'm grateful he left the world with this brilliant piece of work. This system will help you in every facet of life that deals with human interaction. Get it, read it, re read it, master it. You'll be so thankful you did.

Bought this for a college class.

Very vital advice for helping people develop mental skills in a competitive mental environment. Although this book focuses on business negotiation skills building, there's a lot to be learned here that can be applied in any negotiations in the mental environment (like buying a used car, for example - - :) The book helped me understand the importance of being able to walk away from anything so that way you can't be influenced to pay more than you feel is in your best interests.

This is the best book on negotiating I have read. Period. Most books flaunt tactics (which are really "manipulations"). Camp's book looks deeper at human nature and the nature of transactions to uncover truly powerful principles that have helped me countless of times in my life. I give a copy of this book to all of my real estate clients.@thatmnrealtor

I negotiate for a living. This has a significantly different perspective than Getting To Yes, and I believe it provides a much stronger position for achieving negotiated settlements.

Still the best negotiating system out there, though not for the faint of heart. There are multiple books by Jim Camp and they are overlapping to a large degree.

The very best book on negotiating out there. Applies to many arenas of life. Can't recommend highly enough

Sadly, “The Year of the Garden”, Andrea Cheng’s posthumously published prequel to her four previous novels, may be the last of the Anna Wang’s “The Year of …” stories. Anna’s parents have moved the family to a new home. As a result, Anna will be attending a new school and having to make new friends. While Anna is reading “The Secret Garden”, her neighbor Laura interrupts her and introduces herself. The girls discover the similarities in their lives and their mutual interest in gardening. Laura’s interest in soccer challenges their growing friendship. However, when Anna discovers a baby rabbit in the garden and enlists Laura’s help to save it, their friendship resumes and flourishes.Targeted at readers aged 6 to 9, in grades 1 to 4, “The Year of the Garden” involves girls in elementary school. This book is an excellent age-grade matching, the story was a simple one of friendship and of individual differences that younger readers will understand. Andrea Cheng brings the differences in culture and economic means into the story in such a way that they are both instructional and add to understanding the characters’ actions. Her discussion of Anna’s mother and her diligent study of the English language, as well as her work ethic, are an excellent way to teach young readers about the struggles immigrants face as they assimilate into American culture. Further, including the Shepherd’s, an elderly couple for whom Anna’s mother cleans, adds another dimension to the story.“The Year of the Garden” is a fun-to-read book that provides readers with a look at another culture and at the challenges faced by immigrants. It is an excellent representation of caring about and for the elderly; it highlights that they can teach younger generations much about their interests. The topics of environmentalism, recycling, and reusing are nicely woven into the story. The characters are charming and appeal to younger readers. I would recommend reading “The Year of the Garden” prior to reading Andrea Cheng’s books in order to gain a better perspective on the characters and their situations. Further for the target group, reading this book after having read the others of the series may make the book and its lessons less interesting and important than they are.

The Year of the Garden (An Anna Wang novel)For those of you who have read any of the previous Anna Wang books this one takes place before the others. In this one she is heading into 3rd grade and is going to celebrate turning 9.Yes you can read this one if you have never read any of the other books before because it is Anna before the other books. It is such a cute little story. This author really has a knack for bringing out the feelings of kids at this age.She writes in a way that makes kids feel like they are not the only ones going through these emotions.Anna faces things in this story in her world that are so relatable that kids in 2nd-4th grade might be feeling.Moving to a new house. Going to a new school. Finding new friends and figuring out how she fits in.Anna finds a new friend who also just recently moved in.They both will be going to the same school and this story is not only about their friendship and how it evolves but also Anna's friendship and respect for the adults in her life.I like that the characters in this book are not only trying to find their way with each other but also they have a good strong relationship with the adults in this book. There is an older couple that Anna's mom cleans their house on Saturdays.Often Anna goes with and this story talks about their bond and the things the couple share with her and her brother as they teach her things along the way. There is an implied sadness with the older couple and the wife being ill. But she does not pass away in the book just that she is getting ready for when the time comes around. That is why she gives Anna her favorite book from when she was little - The Secret Garden.I do not want to give too much away but just know it is a good clean heartfelt story.Perfect read for this age group.Nice easy chapters with a bit of cute art along the way to help hold the sometimes reluctant readers interest

Portraits of America, by William Albert Allard

From Library Journal

In this career-spanning collection of photographs, National Geographic photojournalist Allard presents a beautiful cross-section of America over nearly 40 years. Beginning his career with photos of Amish life in Lancaster County, PA, he continues with pictures of the elusive Hutterites (a small Amish-like sect in Montana), life in the West, the highest and lowest classes in the Deep South, the lakes of Minnesota, and American rodeo culture. The high points of the photographic journey, however, are photo essays of minor league baseball and blues culture in Chicago, New Orleans, and Mississippi. Included are great character studies along with sweeping landscape shots and eye-catching photographs of people in action. This book is an outstanding look at life in American subcultures in the mid- to late 20th century and is recommended for all libraries. This product was better than described — an autographed edition. The book was like new, and arrived with a clear mylar dust jacket cover. Not only that, it arrived in just three business days from across the nation. Excellent!

Portraits of America is probably the best photography book in my collection. Many of the images in the book are raw, honest and bring out the character of his subjects. What I love about this book is that it is not just a pictorial but has Allard's narrative about his experiences, what he was thinking during these assignments and the people within the images. He shows sides to the various cultures of America that many people never see otherwise.

Received as advertised.... or even maybe better condition than advertised...

Love this book.

Bill Allard's vision of America is that of intimacy and affection, it is evident that Bill has connected himself with his subjects, showing the warmth and joys as well as the pain and sorrow of his subject, Bill's strength is his ability to earn the trust of his subject from The Amish to baseball players. His work with the Blues musicians are a powerful testiment to Bill's ideals of being near his subject, treating them as both godlike and human at the same time. I am priviledge to have attended a slide show of Bill's work on the Blues musician in Havana one fine winter's evening, not so long ago, and those images blew me away. A magnificent work by a master photographer, well done Bill!!

I find it sad that National Geographic photographers are sometimes left out when people talk about the 20th Century great photographers. If you have ever read a National Geographic in bed when you were a kid, you will remember seeing almost ALL of these images. This guy really IS the "National Geographic Look" if there is one. Amazing stuff. Shame then, that the reproductions are not the best I have seen of these images. Some have weird color casts most likely due to the cheaper printing process. Still, more than worth the money!

Though there have been many great photographers that have come through National Geographic, William Allard has likely influenced more photographers in the last 40 years of his career than any of his compatriots. His command of color, light and composition is extraordinary. His ability to shoot under difficult light condition and still produce a beautiful and stunning image is envied and respected. Though his unyielding committment to his work led him to an on again off again relationship with NG, the images that he has produced are a testament to his passion and vision. The book is a wonderful glimpse of the man and his work.
