The brothers became immensely wealthy, but they made no provision for their heirs to carry on the auto manufacturing firm they built into an industry leader. Both died in 1920. The subsequent history of the family, carefully researched and dramatically related by Latham ( Life with Rose Kennedy ) and Dodge "intimate" Agresta, is one of squandered opportunities, failed marriages and general unhappiness. Using the archives of the Anna Thomson Dodge estate for original material, this history of the Dodge family tends to concentrate on the personal and sensational. For the business reader, this book has its moments--especially the early chapters, which focus on the two hard-working, mutually supportive Dodge boys (John and Horace). Their role in the early success of Henry Ford during the infancy of the auto industry is especially fascinating. But mostly the story is of a family, unable to handle their wealth or position and beset by episodes of greed, conspiracy, betrayal, and pettiness. Athough I haven't finished it completely yet, I must say that this book is a real page turner. It has been written in understandable English (not my native language) and the story is really gripping. Don't expect a book as a historical Dodge catalog with a lot of colour pictures (there are only B/W pictures in this book and mainly from the archives of Dodge). Instead you get a nice detailed history of the company founded by the Dodge brothers. While reading this book I also ordered a biography about Henri Ford, for the story of both families have business wise a strong connection. I recommend this book to anyone interested how the car industry developed at the beginning of the last century through the timeline of the Dodge family.

Great book in good shape for an oldie. Really interesting read for both car and horse people as there are names you will recognize popping up everywhere.

I'm interested in cars and this au;thor is interested in the social life of the Dodges. She only inserts car information when necessary.

Dodge Dynasty: The Car and the Family That Rocked DetroitThis book is an unknown Gem........I find the history of the Dodge Brothers endlessly fascinating. The story of the birth of Detroit's Auto Industry, the intrigues and power struggles, the incredible eccentric personalities such as the Doge boys, and Henry Ford. They all come together in this well written biography. I'm a lifelong admirer of all things mechanical, especially automobiles and the men that invented them. As far as I am personally concerned, the book "Dodge Dynasty," is surely a five star winner.

Having read several of the major histories of Henry Ford and the Ford Motor Company, I bought this book (used) looking for the same about the Dodge Brothers. Although not exactly what I expected, the first part of the book offered enlightening information about just how much the Dodge Brothers were responsible for Henry Ford's success and what a direct role the brothers played in the actual manufacture of Ford's early automobiles including the Model T. The remainder of the book is a fascinating tale of a totally dysfunctional family that took the huge sums of money that the brothers made on their own, as Ford contractors, and through the sale of their interest in the Ford Motor Company. None of the brothers' progeny and their many spouses and children ever accomplished anything worthwhile, and were -- in part by the brothers' design and the custom of the time -- incapable of producing anything or even managing the vast Dodge fortune properly. This book should be required reading for anyone who hasn't yet learned that money can't buy happiness.
