Review

"Powerful as myth." —The Washington Post Book World"Beautifully written...a jewel of a book." —The New York Times Book Review"Powerful...full of magic...you won't be doing anything of importance until you have finished this book." —Los Angeles Times"Wonderful...a significant lesson in what storytelling has to do with memory and inheritance." —San Francisco Chronicle“Reading it really changed the way I thought about Asian-American history. Our heritage has a lot of difficult stuff in it — a lot of misogyny, a lot of fear and rage and death. It showed me a past that reached beyond borders and languages and cultures to bring together these disparate elements of who we are. I hadn’t seen our history like that before. At that time, we hadn’t seen a lot of Asian-American representations anywhere, so it was a big deal that it even existed. It made me feel validated and seen. That’s what’s so important about books like that. You feel like, Oh my god, I exist here. I exist in this landscape of literature and memoir. I’m here, and I have a story to tell, and it’s among the canon of Asian-American stories that are feminist and that are true to our being. It’s a book that has stayed with me and lived in me.” —Margaret Cho

I am aware that many people and critics have given much critical acclaim for The Joy Luck Club, and how today it's considered a modern classic novel of the Asian-American experience. First of all, Amy Tan is an excellent writer. The only good things i can say about this book is how it examines the relationships between mother and daughter, American stereotypes of Asians, and i like how Amy Tan allows all of the mothers and daughters to have their own voice with each of their narratives. The only problem i have with this novel, however, is that all of the characters and their narratives are so one-dimensional, and she herself seems to stereotype her own characters and their men. Even though Amy Tan does make a few points about America's perception of Asian-Americans, and the stereotypes, she doesn't really break new ground with it. It's common knowledge that Asian get stereotyped, pretty much all minorities do. And she doesn't really break those stereotypes, to some degree she kind of enhances non-Asians to actually believe those stereotypes. And all in all, i just feel that the stories are not very consistent. Some seem to correlate with another story, and some just seem kind of random. And in my opinion, they are pretty forgettable. The only memorable story was Jing-Mei Woo: "The Joy Luck Club," where she learns more about her mother and discovers that she has 2 half-sisters in China. I kind of thought that the rest of the book would be more about that, and more about the Joy Luck Club in general. But after that it just felt as if i were reading short stories from highschool portfolios. I dunno, overall, an interesting read, but based on what i read i don't really understand why this book is considered a "classic" for no other reason in that it examines the relationships between mother and daughters very well. It doesn't necessarily make it a memorable book that i will read years later. And like i said before, just because the characters are Asian and they talk about the problems of stereotypes and cultural differences between the ones they came from and the one they moved in doesn't necessarily make it the BEST book that talks about the Asian-American experience. I just think there are better books out there that can make this same message without making it seem so predictable and one-dimensional.

A sensitive, multi-generational story of mothers and daughters, cousins and aunties, intertwined with the stories of the mothers as young girls in China and the conflicts and similarities of the generations.Four immigrant Chinese women, Suyuan, An-Mei, Lindo and Ying Ying, survivors of their traumatic pasts, each relate their own stories in vivid detail, in the hope of teaching their American daughters to believe in themselves and achieve a better life in America.Having grown up in America, the daughters, Jing Mei, Rose, Waverly, and Lena, in turn relate their struggles to understand their mothers, and the cultural differences and divisions between them. The book is descriptive, emotional, warm, and intelligent, as well as informative, Should not be missed! Recommended.

I'm a huge fan of Amy Tan..... I have read all her books, have shared them, read them again, and again..... this I think was her first book (or first made into a movie), it's been years and decided to read again and couldn't find, so ordered and loved it so much, I got one for my daughter also (I'm keeping this copy for me). This is not just a story of 4 friends and their 4 daughters.... it's the story of each mother having a history, that changed them, having friendships for decades, and how we must never assume we know it all. Four friends from China, different stories for each, and how each tries to reach their daughters who were born in America, and who have no inkling of the rich and stormy past to bring them to this place and time. Each mother is trying to reach their child, to share lessons, to help them find their Chinese side inside of them. Reminds me how a mother sees more than her child realizes.Wonderful how Amy Tam weaves the tales from one daughter back to the mothers story, and you become invested in each of their lives. A rich and life affirming look at relationships. Loved it.Magical !

This is my third read through this book, and it just keeps getting better. The characters and stories are all relatable in some ways, and confounding in others. The breadth of experiences described in these stories means that at any point, some are directly relevant in my life, and others I can hardly imagine ever being true for anyone, even though I know they are. I first read this book in my early teens, and will probably read it again in a few years. I keep finding new gems in it, that I didn't have the experience to understand on the previous read.

If you're looking for a plot, don't bother. If you're looking for character development and a description of cultural conflict between generations, this is your book. I confess to being a little confused on the characters from segment to segment and I think the author could have differentiated the mothers better. That having been said, it was a delightful read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. These are heartfelt stories of mothers and daughters and their tumultuous relationships and journeys through life. Each woman tells a story of her past which ultimately effects her future in fascinating ways. The only problems I had reading the e-book was I had to go back and match up mothers and daughters which would have been easier with a paper back! The realizations of love and understanding come to each character as their stories resolve into present day. I was sad to get to the end of the book.

I purchased this book to read with my daughter. It was required summer reading for her literature class but I knew we'd both enjoy it as part of our private book club too. It's so well written and contains so many teachable moments. We discussed mother-daughter dynamics, red flags in relationships, and tons more. Simply a good read. We rented the movie after completing the book to get a different perspective - that's always fun!

#40,862 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

If everyone had to read this book our country would be in better shape. It made me more aware of the impact the fast food industry has on the health of our country and our people. Although I still occasionally eat fast food this book made me keep it to an absolute minimum.

The reason I chose this book because it uncovers the horrors behind fast food besides the obvious health implications fast food has on people. I also chose it because it can relate to health class. I can talk my students about how easy it is for E-coli to develop and spread. All it takes is one time of not cleaning you knives or cutting board to get it. I can also talk to them about the importance of finding foods that are home grown by a farmer and doesn’t have any pesticides in it. Fresh meat, vegetables and fruits are healthier than processed food. This book relates so well with health implications because if other countries are gaining weight because of our fast food than fast food is the problem. We should try to stay away from it as much as possible if we want to live long and healthy lives.

Unlike the restaurants and food preparatory processes discussed, the statistics and case studies of Fast Food Nation are palatable. The book succeeds in taking a complex industry, introducing the reader to its history in the context of American industrial development, and disassembling it out by its major components. One of the more memorable sections of the book focuses on fast food employees, the growing standardization of their roles over time, and the extreme measures some companies pursue in order to avoid any consequences of hiring an inconsistent, unreliable workforce. Fast Food Nation makes a great effort to identify many of the cultural, personal, and political issues in play within the fast food industry, though it does little to incite change. If the book presented concrete solutions, I do not recall many of them, it works better as a highlight reel of atrocity rather than a meditation on possible improvements. I read the book in 2012, 11 years after Fast Food Nation was originally published but I have failed to see any of the changes highlighted in the book taking hold. Democracy still appears to be smothered by special interests and lobbying, and despite other media emphasizing the horrifying state of our food industry we seem stuck in that same feedback loop. Ultimately Fast Food Nation will open your eyes to many of the issues in the fast food industry, though perhaps the greatest lesson is how much more it will take to actually incite change.

The purpose of this book, about the fast food industry, is best summarized by the author within the introduction: "I do not mean to suggest that fast food is solely responsible for every social problem now haunting the United States. In some cases (such as the malling and sprawling of the West) the fast food industry has been a catalyst and a symptom of larger economic trends. In other cases (such as the rise of franchising and the spread of obesity) fast food has played a more central role. By tracing the diverse influences of fast food I hope to shed light not only on the workings of an important industry, but also on a distinctively American way of viewing the world."This book recounts the history behind the uprising of fast food to become a dominant force in our modern society. However, what most of us do not know is : "what lies behind the shiny, happy surface of every fast food transaction". Eric goes on to investigate every aspect of the fast food industry: people, cattle, vegetables, health etc. The storytelling techniques that he uses throughout the book bring this expose to life. The stories are descriptive, personal and touching.A very educative and enlightening read, and a rude (much needed) awakening about the food industry in general and the fast food industry in particular.Below are key excerpts from the book that I found particularly insightful:"The history of the twentieth century was dominated by the struggle against totalitarian systems of state power. The twenty-first will no doubt be marked by a struggle to curtail excessive corporate power. The great challenge now facing countries throughout the world is how to find a proper balance between the efficiency and the amorality of the market.""Today's fast food industry is the culmination of those larger social and economic trends. The low price of a fast food hamburger does not reflect its real cost - and should. the profits of the fast food chains have been made possible by losses imposed on the rest of society. The annual cost of obesity alone is now twice as large as the fast food industry's total revenues.""The right pressure applied to the fast food industry in the right way could produce change faster than any act of Congress. The United Students Against Sweatshops and other activist groups have brought widespread attention to the child labor, low wages, and hazardous working conditions in Asian factories that make sneakers for Nike.""Nobody in the United States is forced to buy fast food. The first steps toward meaningful change is by far the easiest: stop buying it. The executives who run the fast food industry are not bad men. They are businessmen. They will sell free-range, organic, grass-fed hamburgers if you demand it. They will sell whatever sells at a profit. The usefulness of the market, its effectiveness as a tool, cuts both ways.""Whatever replaces the fast food industry should be regional, diverse, authentic, unpredictable, sustainable, profitable - and humble. It should know its limits. People can be fed without being fattened or deceived. This new century may bring an impatience with conformity, a refusal to be kept in the dark, less greed, more compassion, less speed, more common sense, a sense of humor about bran essences and loyalties, a view of food as more than just fuel. Things don't have to be the way they are. Despite all evidence to the contrary, I remain optimistic."

The Seasons of the Soul: The Poetic Guidance and Spiritual Wisdom of Hermann Hesse, by Hermann Hesse

Review

“These vital, essential poems could not possibly be appearing at a more crucial time in the history of our Western culture.… Hermann Hesse’s poetry is as eye-opening and as life-giving as his most famous novels. It offers the heartfelt, infinitely timely guidance of someone who lived at every step what he wrote and who leads his readers back to the simplicity of ‘what we knew in the beginning.’” —Peter Kingsley, author of Reality and A Story Waiting to Pierce You: Mongolia, Tibet and the Destiny of the Western World“Ludwig Fischer proves wrong all who claim that ‘poetry is what gets lost in translation.’ His English versions of sixty-eight poems by Hermann Hesse ring as if they had been first conceived in English. In addition to that, Fischer’s sensitive introductions to these poems make this book a rare treasure. Hesse … struggled with the dark side of life and grew strong. Therefore his poems—now at last in English—can help us find strength to come fully alive.” —Brother David Steindl-Rast, OSB, author of Deeper Than Words: Living the Apostles' Creed and Gratefulness, The Heart of Prayer: An Approach to Life in Fullness   “It is in his poems that you meet most intimately Hesse the man in all his emotional intensity, sometimes scalding self-knowledge, and fierce spiritual struggle, and so experience most completely the inner turmoil and revelations that led to his becoming one of the philosopher-sages of our tumultuous transition.” —from the foreword by Andrew Harvey, author of The Hope: A Guide to Sacred Activism and Heart Yoga: The Sacred Marriage of Yoga and Mysticism"This collection of poetry reveals his inner journey, one that is often filled with inner turmoil and despairing, and yet unwavering in [Hesse's] devotion toward an intimacy with self/spirit. Commentary from the scholar and translator Ludwig Max Fischer enriches our understanding of Hesse's life context from which the poems were born." — New Consciousness Review"The Seasons of the Soul offers valuable guidance in poetic form for those longing for a more meaningful life, seeking a sense of homecoming in nature, in each stage of life, in a renewed relationship with the divine." — Vitality Magazine"A thoughtful work of literature, The Seasons of the Soul is a strong pick for any world literary studies and poetry collection." — Midwest Book Review

Not a "complete poems" volume--which would be very nice to have, but which I don't think exists yet!--but a nice compilation which takes poems written all throughout Hesse's life, and presents them in a very non-chronological sequence, but put into sections according to themes. The title is a little pompous, making it seem like Hesse was an enlightened teacher gazing down upon humanity--which he would disagree with, and which his best poems dispute--in fact making him to appear like the pompous old image of Goethe which he so criticized in his classic STEPPENWOLF novel--but the contents are very good.It has been argued that some of these English translations seem "New Age-y" in a bad sense, vague and pontifical. I think this was just a tendency of Hesse--who loved nature--and not the fault of the translator; other, earlier translations also seem to have presented this tendency in some of Hesse's poetry. And it's not *bad*, just uninteresting at times. But Hesse at his best--and there are many examples of that in this book--is very edifying and beautiful to read.

This short book is well structured, with an informative and detailed introduction to each section of poems. Each of these excellent introductions give an intimate sense of Hesse the poet, his passions and his torments. The poems that follow were, like most poetry volumes, made up of verses that resonated deeply with me, and others that were interesting to read. Each reader would, I'm sure, find their own favourite poem. Some of the poems were, unexpectedly, less lyrical than I expected from a mystical poet. Perhaps some essence was lost in translation (always a difficult task) or perhaps this is Hesse's Germanic voice - rather sombre and heavier in tone than other mystical poets such as Yeats, Rilke, Kabir or Gibrain.Overall, this book is very good. The introductory pieces followed by a selection of poems grouped into common themes (Love, Inspiration, Nature, Dialogue with Divine and Seasons of Life) made this easy to read and accessible. The poems in the section on The Seasons of Life and the Passage of Time are particularly moving.

I was excited to purchase and receive this collection, especially after seeing good reviews on Amazon. Hesse has been perhaps my favorite author since reading Siddartha as a teenager, and I keep returning to Steppenwolf, Demian, along with Journey to the East, long after having read each of these for the first time. While there is no doubt, to my mind, that Hesse was one of the greatest writers of his time, the translation you will find here is severely lacking. What struck me as immediately telling about its quality was the sense that I was reading cheap new-age banter, comprised by the foreward and other exegetical material. This is divided into snippets from both the translator and another person, both of whom seem to offer some fine and accurate remarks, but also a good deal of exposition that is frankly overdone and sappy. The biggest disappointment, however, was the fact that many poems which rhyme in the original German have not retained this feature in the English. Nor have they retained their proper rhythm. I can acknowlege that this would have been no simple feat, but such is the work of good translation. For an example, consider "Stufen," one of Hesse's finest cosmic poems, the one which the collection ends in. Fischer translates the title as "Stages," which gets at the meaning of the poem, but it is precisely this sort of straying from the letter of the piece that illuminates the sort of liberties he's already taken to interpret for the reader. Now compare that to Fischer's English:All blossoms will wilt, each youth fold into the mold of age.Wisdom and virtue never last forever.Your heart must always be ready to leaveand ready to begin again, must form new bondswith courage and without regret.Every beginning offers a magic powerthat protects us and helps us to endure. This journey through the realms of lifewas not meant to end in one home only.World spirit does not want to tie us down, wants us to soar into the open. When we stay too long in one place, get stuck in norm and habit, we wear out.Only embarking on new, unknown journeyscan free us from the prison of stagnation.Maybe the moment of our death toois just another gate to new dimensionsThe call of life to us will never end.Well, then, my heart, take leave and heal. While much of the poem's sense has been preserved, Fischer's form does not imitate Hesse's strictly enough to give one a feel for the intensity and exactness of the latters' disciplined, formal, traditional craft. The intention with this collection was good, but the execution seems to me flawed. One gets the suspicion from it that Fischer's German is simply not up to the task. Some might call me a Steppenwolf for complaining like this, and I would concur entirely.

I had the pleasure of reading this slim bound volume of Herman Hesse’s poems recently in the local library and simply had to purchase a copy of my own. I had read Herman Hesse when I was a teenager but it is the beautiful and sensitive translation of these poems by Ludwig Max Fischer that helped me to once more appreciate the depth and boldness of Hesse’s writing. The poems in this edition are divided into five sections roughly corresponding to the topics of love, inspiration, finding meaning, the divine and growing old. Each candid poem resonated deeply as now I read it not only admiring the beauty and power of the poems but from experiences encountered and memories accumulated. What is so moving is the poems speak a universal language of thoughts, emotions, questions, doubts, resolutions that transcend time, space and culture. I find this a book for those not only seeking inspiration but who enjoy the beauty of language and imagery as solace for the soul.

I've loaned it once too many times and am missing referring to it, but it's impossible to get it back; one-of-a-kind, in the very best sense of those words. I ordered his other book for $100 as a result of this one which is a total first and probably last for me to do.

I did not realize what a wonderful poet Hesse was until I read this book. Sensitive, Evocative and Compelling. Fischer's commentary truly gives a sense of the influences that were behind this great writer. A book to cherish. Thank you !

I heard one of Hermann Hesse's quotes on a TV program and just had to hear more from this author. Beautiful and inspiring collection that will certainly touch your soul. Puts many things into perspective.

Kevin Zadai carries one of the most powerful anointings of the Presence and it is revealed in his new book. He tells us the steps to being Inhabited by our lover and best friend Jesus. If you love the Presence you will love reading Kevin's book.

I found this amazing as Kevin shares the reality of walking in our Spiritual calling and how that is completely different from a mental concept of our religious concepts and Jesus. He also reveals how our concepts limit our faith, so he shares what he has seen and heard and related them all to the scripture and where all these things are written though they may not be well understood. He encourages the assembly and congregating of believers and I find his humility to not attack or belittle beliefs but rather he speaks the Truth as it was revealed to him and allows everyone to be free to seek & understand and the Messiah as He is, which he says is how He is written. Kevin expounds in several levels are be important lessons he learned & shares them outrightly without discrimination to ‘reality’, which he calls Truth.

Read his book the Visitation also. Very life changing

I loved this. I can't wait to read it again. It's everything the Spirit has been teaching me himself. Great confirmation in my personal walk and I can't wait to experience more. It's been growing, manifesting and I'm believing and trusting Papa that more is coming. Thank you Kevin for your obedience to the best Papa there ever will be!!

This book is very interesting. Since I have read many books like this one, I didn't rate it as 5 stars because there are so many books out there on this subject, and some are even better than this book is, in my opinion. There are many biblical references in the book, so that is very helpful. Possibly if I had read this author's first book, I might have rated this book even higher.

Wonderful book, blessed to be a Christian !

My whole book is underlined in yellow highlighter. And I am on the third time around. I love this book. It has brought me so much closer to understanding Jesus. One line that stood out is Jesus saying, "Do you have food in the kitchen? I want to go feed the poor. May I borrow your car?" Now THAT is relationship! Just get the book and read it. You will be SO GLAD that you did! I am off to read all of his books. I am so hungry to have the relationship that he has.

This is a book for those who are sincere. Kevin Zadai speaks to those who want it all with Jesus. I highlighted almost the entire book. If that is what you want for your life, read it.
