John MacArthur is an enigma to me. His exegesis on some subjects seem to fall so short of the obvious meaning throughout scripture while others, such as with The Gospel According to Jesus, are so overwhelmingly sound and convicting that it is a clear work of genius. While every theologian has their positions on doctrine, John MacArthur's approach can be divisive and harmful to the body of Christ with doctrines that are not essential to salvation (Strange Fire). And, while this book and the topic of "Lordship Salvation" is no exception to controversy, Mr. MacArthur has hit it out of the park with this book and the controversy is welcomed as the consequence of being wrong about your eternal destiny is so enormous!I am reading this book again for the second time in as many months. MacArthur makes it abundantly clear time and time again that salvation is by grace thru faith and not meritorious and there should be no doubt in the reader's mind with regard to his position on this. MacArthur does a masterful job of proving his argument and answers opposing views straight on with clear biblical support. The Gospel According to Jesus is a must read for every believer and is now one of my all time favorite books, (which is saying a lot because I swore I would never read anything from MacArthur again). The topic and the truths presented are very compelling. Please read!
I have studied this subject for months as one who sits in the pews. I have read what the Bible itself says about it vs what the preaching of today is on the subject from most pulpits out there. This is a problem of an incomplete gospel and redefining of terms that not even the most seasoned Christian in the pew seems to recognize and it's present in even the most conservative Bible based churches. It is so close to the truth, but it can be very hard to tell the difference. It has been going on for generations. The truth needs to come back and a complete gospel needs to be preached. I think it hits on the key element of what is wrong with preaching today at its core. After studying the situation for so long, I think this book is by far the best information and the most thorough on the subject. I found it very easy and understandable as well and thoroughly documented with scripture. I think this book belongs in every Christians library and deserves to be read by all pastors and Christians.
Are you a Christian? Are you really sure or are you following a false GOSPEL OF "EASY BELIEVISM" where they told you just believing is Jesus is enough. This book will help you see what true Christianity is all about and you WILL find out if you are truly saved. Think about this carefully and JUDGE YOURSELF. This book will help. Matthew 7: 21-23 21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many [a]miracles?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’
What can I say. It's John MacArthur after all. I had read this book many years ago from our church library. Then I saw this on Amazon. I know MacArthur from his books and sermons and his study bibles. Although there are times when I don't agree with him all the time, he's more right then wrong. This book nails what is happening to the Evangelical church with the likes of people like Joel Osteen and others. The one thing, among others, is that MacArthur is not shy in calling out those who would distort the Christian message. Regardless of what book you read from this man of God, you will hear the truth.
Today in evangelicalism where many are finding it easy to compromise the basic tenets of the Christian faith and the true gospel is under attack even from some who hold lofty positions within evangelical circles, John MacArthur must be commended for presenting a comprehensive, biblically sound book that vindicates the true gospel of Jesus Christ. It is a must-read for all those. serious Christians, who understand that the authentic gospel is central to the building of the kingdom of God. This book is also loaded with biblical evidence that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Christ is both Lord and Savior and true salvation hinges on the acceptance of this.
If you are an (unfortunate) member of the charismatic movement, if you listen to Osteen garbage with rapt attention, YOU WILL HATE THIS BOOK. John MacArthur is a pastor who sticks to the Bible, even when it is not attractive to the superficiality of today's megachurches. Scripture holds the answers and the emphasis is on the life to come, not to creature comforts of present day. MacArthur does not treat Jesus like a personal Santa Claus such as the evangelicals do. He dispels the common myths of the prosperity movement, shows that 'speaking something into existence' is not biblical but originated (along with The Secret) with the metaphysical quasi-panthesistic movements of the early 1900s. People in the charismatic movement are not saved or redeemed based on the preachings. He reminds us that the devil loves to enter the church and twist it. No wonder MacArthur has so many enemies.
Fantastic book. Every single Christian and those who call themselves Pastors and preachers should read this book and check everything said by the scriptures. MacArthur will tell you that he is fallible, not perfect, and that he makes mistakes but everything in this book is backed by God's perfect and Holy Word. Give this book to those attending the fluffy modern churches who are afraid of offending everyone except God. Those churches who pander to the worldly people who want to be part of a fluffy community but do not want to obey Jesus Christ as Lord of their lives are lost and they need to wake up before it's too late.
