This review is of the 2nd edition, there is now a third edition.Thrower concisely outlines the history of cartographic advances from a 2300 B.C. Mesopotamian map to modern day animated and GIS maps. Thrower is careful to highlight cartographic advances distinct from geographic discoveries in Classical Antiquity, East and South Asia, European and Islam in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and then advances in the 19th century to modern times. Perhaps as a modern map maker, I forget that there was an early inventor of map projections (probably Hipparchus of Niceaes), contour lines (1791), and representative fractions (in France in 1806). The history of projections is presented throughout the book, and concisely in an appendix. The initial chapter on maps of pre-literate people was perhaps most fascinating to me with the Bedolina petroglyph (Northern Italy, 2000-1500 B.C ) and Marshall Island stick charts. There is now a 3rd edition, so perhaps the book was updated with recent advances such as Google earth and a dynamic GPS maps. The book is well illustrated, but sometimes the maps suffer from reduction and being in black and white. Readers of this may enjoy the color maps presented in Mapping the World: maps and their history by Nathaniel Harris.

It is more complete than I could have imagined.

On one hand, there are facts about conscious experience--the way clarinets sound, the way lemonade tastes--that we know subjectively, from the inside. On the other hand, such facts are not readily accommodated in the objective world described by science. How, after all, could the reediness of clarinets or the tartness of lemonade be predicted in advance? Central to Daniel C. Dennett's attempt to resolve this dilemma is the "heterophenomenological" method, which treats reports of introspection nontraditionally--not as evidence to be used in explaining consciousness, but as data to be explained. Using this method, Dennett argues against the myth of the Cartesian theater--the idea that consciousness can be precisely located in space or in time. To replace the Cartesian theater, he introduces his own multiple drafts model of consciousness, in which the mind is a bubbling congeries of unsupervised parallel processing. Finally, Dennett tackles the conventional philosophical questions about consciousness, taking issue not only with the traditional answers but also with the traditional methodology by which they were reached. Dennett's writing, while always serious, is never solemn; who would have thought that combining philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience could be such fun? Not every reader will be convinced that Dennett has succeeded in explaining consciousness; many will feel that his account fails to capture essential features of conscious experience. Neither Dennett's reductionist approach nor David Chalmers' non-reductionist approach have thus far provided the pivotal concepts needed to resolve the question of the nature or origin of human consciousness. However, Dennett provides a touchstone for testing Chalmer's innovative out-of-the-box conjectures.In The Conscious Mind, David Chalmers introduces the notion: qualia - phenomena where subjective processing is accompanied by ineffable aspects of conscious experience (which apprehends the redness of red, the beauty of mathematical forms, love, the selfness experience). Indeed, qualia are in the eye of the beholder: the beholder's perceptual experience, the beholder's subjective experience, and the beholder's conceptualization of esoteric attributes of the experience. Dennett presents an argument against qualia; that the concept is so confused it cannot be put to any use or be understood in empirical ways; that qualia do not constitute a valid extension of physical experience.While refuting qualia, Dennett extols memes which are pregnant ideas and cultural items putatively transmitted by repetition in a manner analogous to the biological transmission of genes. Dennett, sees memes as a units of selection, which persist across generations like genes. He posits a neural Darwinism where meme evolution can even account for the origin of morality and explain religious belief and adherence to it (Darwin's Dangerous Idea and Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon, also by Dennett)Dennett attributes the seeming transcendence of consciousness beyond its neural network containment as the "tricky illusory theatrics of consciousness." Dennett's analyses of consciousness places much faith on what constitutes accepted scientific truth and dogma; on huge collections of reproducible experimental data, but not on imaginative thought about what the data might mean or ultimately signify. There is a large body of accumulated physical and neurophysiological data that virtually cries out for imaginative reinterpretation to break the logjam which is blocking blanket acceptance of the transcendence of human consciousness.In My Universe - A Transcendent Reality Alex Vary offers an imaginative reinterpretation of the empirical data Dennett esteems and contemplates. Vary proposes a paradigmatic framework and some new concepts which can help explain the seemingly transcendent nature of human consciousness. What Vary proposes are akin to 'tools of thought' advocated by Dennett in Consciousness Explained and should serve at least for discussion and elucidation purposes.Vary presumes that consciousness is an attribute of a reality that preexists its localized foci in self-aware human or their neural networks. Dennett dismisses the notion of such selfness existing before birth as a fiction, ". . . an organization of information that has structured your body's control system (or, to put it in its more usual provocative form, if what you are is the program that runs on your brain's computer), then you could in principle survive the death of your body as intact as a program can survive the destruction of the computer on which it was created and first run." Dennett characterizes the notion of an automaton's or a computer's assumption of transcendent consciousness as a hankering for immortality; as if a computer program could hanker for self-perpetuation, or anything beyond its ken. Dennett shrugs off the dilemma by declaring "as with all the earlier mysteries, there are many who insist - and hope - that there will never be a demystification of consciousness."

I don't think it really explains the consciousness it is more like impossibility of explaining consciousness. I might be wrong. The book can really be hard to read, despite the author's effort to make it funny and bearable. It is a complex matter and you must have back ground in psychology to understand different theories and perspectives from different psychologists and scientists. I am a pretty good reader but it took me a long time to read this book. It is over 400 pages in small print since the subject is a more of school subject (similar to text book) it can be boring at times and it really makes you tired to read it. Sometimes it seems the arguments are similar or the same but in the core of the arguments, they are all distinct from the other arguments with slight differences. A psychology major of master's degree or doctorate must read it but for others unless they are really into psychology they might not understand the book or may become bored. I think it is a very well written book with a great argument.

This brilliant book by Dennett, one of the best philosophers of our age, will recreate the way you think about consciousness and build a strong foundation for a scientific, rational explanation of it, inspired by a perfect blend of neuroscience, computer science, psychology and linguistics.Most of us think of the conscious-self as a decision-maker, a driver of the train of thought. This image is shattered by convincing the reader that there is not a single line of continuous "train" of thought and there is no central point where "it all comes together" . There are multiple inputs, little particles of quasi-narratives, coming from different parts of the brain with different agendas and competing with each other to make their agenda "win", being written and rewritten over and over again in the process.This theory (hastily summarized here by me) may seem counter-intuitive and maybe even outrageous at first, but the author does his best in slowly chipping away at the established beliefs about consciousness such as the Cartesian Theater and convincing the reader at least to have a new, more rational perspective.I was also delighted to see that my own recent theories on consciousness are endorsed here. So I may actually be a bit biased in giving this book a perfect 5-star rating. But it deserves absolutely nothing less than a 4 out of 5 for anyone interested in explaining consciousness.

Excellent book.I resisted getting this book for a long time because I thought it was impossible to explain consciousness, and therefore that Dennett had to be wrong, and therefore the title implied that he was a pompous self-assured ass. But as is so often the case, I was wrong.Dennett succeeds in completely dismantling the "Cartesian Theater", not just in an abstract philosophical way, but in a way that changed the model I have of myself. It's rare to have a truly new thought, but this book succeeded in planting one.And now, I'm off to buy another Dennett book, because I want to know what he's had to say since 1992!

I enjoyed roughly the first 1/3 of this book. The ideas were fresh for someone not in the field, and I think Dan explains key features of consciousness quite well including debunking the Cartesian Theater paradigm. The book is too long. It should be about 1/4 to 1/3 of the length. Dan often takes a simple point and draws it out with flowery, long-winded writing. I found myself exclaiming, "get to the point already" multiple times. I was getting so frustrated that I rifled through the last 1/3 of the book or so.

I think this is the hardest reading I had for a while but it was totally worth it! It's a brilliant journey into a human conciseness and what it really is. It's a challenge to understand many concepts in the book but please do your best and you'll finish the book with a great feeling of discovering something unique.

The Mrs. Pollifax series was a favorite of my Grandma, and I read this out of nostalgia. I could see why she liked the series - an inventive, wise and courageous old lady as the main character. I liked Mrs. Pollifax' observation. "There are no happy endings, Jenny, there are only happy people."A critic described this book as a page-turner, but I disagree, especially about the beginning of the book. There was a little too much emphasis on scenic descriptions - the color brown was mentioned too often and sometimes the book sounded like a travel brochure. But the subject of culture shock and communication obstacles was handled well. The trip put a lot of pressure on the little group of travellers, and, as one character put it: "Pressure can go either way... it creates diamonds, it also creates explosions." All in all a fun read.

This time out, the story divides between Mrs. Pollifax and her co-spy, with several twists to keep us on our toes. This was the second Mrs. Pollifax novel I've read and I was not disappointed. If you're at all a fan of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple - I think you'll really enjoy Mrs. Pollifax. If you've never read Mrs. Pollifax - begin with the first in the series so that you understand how she came to be working for the US Goverment - that book is: The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax. This book, is charming overall. The author does an excellent job hiding the identity of Mrs. Pollifax' accomplice - and enemy - until the time is right for us to know. The suspense is very good. I love the small unfolding romances as well. My only complaint, if you can call it that, is that Mrs. Pollifax is able to resolve something tricky (I won't tell you which thing and ruin it for you - don't worry) by almost luck at one point - I would have prefered her to use her brains and resourcefulness more in some instances. But - it is a minor quibble - she's so charming - I'm eager to read more of the series! Hope you enjoy it too. :)

The Mrs. Pollifax series by Dorothy Gilman are great books. You have them all on audio Kindle which I don't care for. I prefer to read the books myself. There are 6 more Mrs. Pollifax books. The ones you already have on Kindle E-reader format aren't all available in the order in which they were written. When I read a series I like to read them in the order they were written, because each one builds and adds to the previous book. Please make the other 6 Mrs. Pollifax books available in the Kindle E-reader format.

Dorothy Gilman has been one of my favorite authors for years! All locations described in her books have been thoroughly researched for authenticity. The heroine is a seventy-something lady who accidently became a "spy". She had been bored with life and suddenly found a new, exciting life. Start with the first book to know how and why her life changed; all following books are independent adventures. Cozy, easy read and fun.

Dorothy Gilman DOB 1923 New Brunswick NJ was 43 years of age in 1966 when Unexpected Mrs Pollifax about a conventional grandmotherly garden club member was published, the first of 14 Mrs Pollifax assignments with the CIA. The ones who cut corners and treat others unfairly tend to only have limited or short term success. The book does a good job of showing examples of ethical behavior and what can result from it. There are several stories of how acting ethically has resulted in success for not only the person in charge, but also for the people working around them.I think the book could have gone into better detail when talking about some of the people who act unethically. For the most part it tells the end result and does not tell a lot about what they did to achieve their short-term success. Also, the book did not go into much detail about knowing how others actually want to be treated. Treating others the way you want to be treated may not work in every situation. How do you exactly know what others want from you or your business?I would recommend this book for anyone, not just for someone entering the business world. I believe that a lot can be learned from this book, not only for your approach on conducting business but also on your approach to life. It was insightful and would help guide you to figure out what kind of person, whether in your personal or professional life, you want to be.

Good read and a lot of interesting content, but not much for business ethics. However, hope to use some ideas in a way that can be applied toward business. The book if very tiny with a nice hard cover. I read it in a couple hours while sitting at the beach.

This book really challenges the reader to do a self inspection to see what his priorities really are and if he is looking out for himself or for others. Must read and re-read.

The power of Old Testament Ethics for the People of God lies in its ability to make clear not only why Old Testament ethics are relevant in modernity, but how. The why is predicated on the authority of the whole cannon of Scripture, so that the whole interprets the part, and there results a balanced consideration of both the Old and New Testaments. The how is depicted in its practical, everyday application to the theological, political, economic, moral, civil, and social realms. Wright doesn’t do anything “new” by constructing any radical and innovative theories about the Old Testament simply to satisfy modern sensibilities. Rather, he meticulously shines a light on the principles and foundational ethics that have been staring us in the face all along. What the reader walks away with is a fresh, new understanding of the Old Testament that will persuade you to look back to the Law in order to look forward to Christ and grow your faith.The basic motivation that Wright uses to analyze OT ethics is to reveal the underlying principle that animates the moral code. These principles are then extrapolated to reveal how they applied in the tribal, agrarian, ancient Israelite society, and how the same principles apply to modernity. By implication, this debunks the myth that the OT was a mere historical era that has no cotemporary relevance; it also steers us away from segregating the law into distinct categories and then choosing which ones are pertinent. In my personal opinion, the chapter on Justice and Righteousness (8) is brilliant and will forever change the way one thinks about secular law and the legal system.Old Testament Ethics for the People of God was recommended to me by a well-respected and very well-read seminary professor, and I am tremendously grateful for the wisdom and insight provided in this marvelous book. It is my opinion that any Christian serious about Bible study or who demands a rigorous, considerate analysis of Old Testament ethics must read this book. I was first tuned into Chris Wright by his The Mission of God, (c. 2006) and I've not been disappointed since. He's likely the most accessible OT scholar alive today. That's a claim by a 'lay-theologian.' I'm certainly not up on the longer list of names which are seeking to keep abreast of current theology/philosophy in the OT genres, just perusing the accessible writings on a basic OT theology. He seems aware of this greater collection of writings but his style is articulate, seems comprehensive, and certainly brings back to life a significant section of Scripture which, for the bulk of the 20th century had been--by "evangelical scholarship" relegated to heavy spiritualizing and/or Messianic prophecies--at least from an American perspective. I have found that as an Evangelical, some of my best theology mentors have come from the other side of the Atlantic, especially from the U.K., thinking of Chris, but also N.T. Wright.This is a foundational document--as is The Mission of God--in tying the primary themes of the O.T., their relation to ethics for the people of God in any age, and to the mission of the people of God, especially in this age. Thank you, Chris, for your hard work on this another volume which brings glory to God, as any good scholarship should.

This is a book that helps you understand the interrelationship between the Old Testament and New Testament ethics.

Great book and covers many different subjects like the importance of human life, economics, land, government, caring for your neighbor etc.

Wright's work is a masterful approach to this important subject. I will use this book for a fundamental basis of study in biblical ethics.

Excellent dissertation on the Old Testament and Ethics. While it is definitely on a scholarly level, it's wihtout a doubt an easy read.

This is a very broad and difficult topic, yet the author deals with it with such clarity. Not an easy read, but rewarding.
