Review

"This book is useful for all parents who want their children togrow up with healthy attitudes in a world that uses race toseparate human beings. . . . A worthwhile read." "This superb, rational, and highly readable volume answers a deeplyfelt need. Parents and educators alike have long struggled tounderstand what meanings race might have for the very young, andfor ways to ensure that every child grows up with a healthy senseof self. Marguerite Wright handles sensitive issues with consummateclarity, practicality, and hope. Here we have an indispensableguide that will doubtless prove a classic." (Edward Zigler, Ph.D.,sterling professor of psychology and director, Yale Bush Center inChild Development and Social Policy) "Here, at last, is an intelligent, well-researched and provocative, yet also comforting and reassuring book of advice. For parents whoare trying to raise emotionally healthy children in a raciallypolarized world, Marguerite Wright has performed a timely andtremAndous public service." (Clarence E. Page, syndicatedcolumnist, The Chicago Tribune) "As I read Dr. Wright's book, I was reminded of what it's like topeel an onion. Layer after layer, the book uncovers the complexissues surrounding race and children. With wisdom and compassion, she explains how black and biracial children perceive color andrace. But, most importantly, she gives us guidelines we need toraise healthy and happy children in our race conscious world. Anexcellent primer for parents, teachers, counselors, and anyone whois concerned with the future of our children." (Belva Davis, reporter, KRON-TV, San Francisco) "In her book, Marguarite Wright uses a wealth of examples from herwork with children and families and offers a creative array ofsuggestions and strategies for raising health black and biracialchildren. This book is a much-needed guide for rearing children ina society that is all too conscious about race." (Tony Paap, president and CEO, Children's Hospital Oakland) "Finally, a practical and intelligent discussion of a complex issuethat is so frequently misunderstood. All those who want to raisehealthy children who have a positive sense of themselves can gainvaluable lessons from this book." (Pedro Noguera, professor ofeducation, University of California, Berkeley) "This is simply the best book I've ever read on raising or teachingminority children. It's short . . . filled with memorableobservations and useful advice." (Joe Morris, professor anddirector, School of Psychology, California State University,Northridge)

From the Inside Flap

Myth: Black and biracial children dislike their race from the time they are preschoolers.Reality: Young black and biracial children are unable to understand racial prejudice. In fact, developmentally they are incapable of understanding the concept of race. A child's concept of race is quite different from that of an adult. Young children perceive skin color as magical?even changeable?and unlike adults, are incapable of understanding the mature concepts surrounding race and racism. Just as children learn to walk and talk, they likewise come to understand race in a series of predictable stages. Based on Dr. Marguerite A. Wright's research and clinical experience working as a child psychologist, I'm Chocolate, You're Vanilla teaches us that the color-blindness of early childhood can, and must, be taken advantage of in order to guide the positive development of a child's self-esteem.I'm Chocolate, You're Vanilla is filled with practical, positive, and creative ideas for handling common situations such as what to do when your child says she wants a white doll; how to deal with relatives and friAnds who compare your children's skin colors and hair textures; and how to discipline your children so that they can grow up with self respect. Teachers will gain valuable insights about how preconceptions can contribute to a child's success or failure and how to handle discipline problems in the classroom. Wright answers some fundamental questions about children and race including What do children know and understand about the color of their skin? When do children understand the concept of race? Are there warning signs that a child is being adversely affected by racial prejudice? How can adults avoid instilling in children their own negative perceptions and prejudices? What can parents do to prepare their children to overcome the racism they are likely to encounter? How can schools lessen the impact of racism? With wisdom an

This book has as a section devoted to what black parents are doing wrong. If you want to read a book that makes you feel like a good person for saving black kids, this is the book for you. If you want to read a book that helps you raise your black children to have a positive sense of self, please get another book.

The book is useful for non-blacks who have adopted or who teach black children. It is well-written and well-researched, follows a logical structure, and contains an interesting appendix which deals with the stages of race awareness.However.The title of this book is actually very misleading. In titling it as she did, the author assumed that the lives and experiences of biracial children and black children are the same. They're not. Not even close. This book has 268 pages of text, and only six deal with the issues of biracial children - interesting material, but hardly worth $13-14. You can essentially find the same information online for free.Save your money if you are the parent or teacher of a biracial child and are looking for assistance and insight because you will find very little of it here.

This book looks at a lot of stereotypes and myths regarding transracial adoption and I appreciated it! It's a good read for all parents.

I bought this for my daughter and she mentioned that it is a very good book with ideas that she hadn't considered for raising her biracial children.

This book was exactly was I was looking for. It is NOT a book about adoption. To me, the book was how from the preschool years, children start to form opinions about race on up through the high school years. Also, it's about how teachers and parents can have a profound impact on how children view themselves in situations where they would be in the minority. I would highly recommend this book especially to parents like myself (black/hispanic with a white husband). Our daughters look hispanic and we live in an entirely white community. Our girls are ALWAYS the only ones with "brown" skin (as they say) in their classrooms. This book actually helps you address some of these issues and how to talk to teachers. Excellent book!

Important information~found no where else~for anyone raising children. An eye-opener for knowing how to handle skin color differences, and the questions children may have. Race needs to be a dinner table, discussion so that children can go out into the world with knowledge instead of blindness.

Good views for multi-cultural families

We are adopting kids from Ethiopia, so I got this for my wife to read. She absolutely loved it. Not sure if it was due to our situation or if she would have loved it anyway. Brings up interesting points about inter-racial adoptions. She is recommending it to our friends and family as a good read.

Review

“Pearce insightfully dissects the profound psychological and political impact nuclear technology has had on humankind and unflinchingly questions whether it might be time to acknowledge that its promises for both energy and defense have been largely unfulfilled.”—Booklist“In Fallout, Mr. Pearce, a veteran science journalist, travels the world to pin down what he calls ‘the radioactive legacies of the nuclear age.’ He moves between weaponry and energy, cataloguing mistakes, dishonesty and irrational fears. The result is a panorama of atomic grotesquerie that is at once troubling, surprising and ruthlessly entertaining.”—The Economist“For any reader who craves a clear-headed examination of the tangled relationship between a powerful technology and human politics, foibles, fears, and arrogance, Fallout is the definitive look at humanity’s nuclear adventure.”—Midwest Book Review“This tour de force by Fred Pearce takes the reader on a riveting journey through nuclear installations and radioactive landscapes around the world. A blend of firsthand reporting and historical research, Pearce’s prose reads easily while simultaneously asking the hard questions. The author’s penetrating political eye and sober scientific gaze combine to reveal the many reasons, including toxic legacies of fear and deception, that it’s time to call an end to the nuclear age. Read this book as if the future depended on it.”—Betsy Hartmann, author of The America Syndrome: Apocalypse, War and Our Call to Greatness

My father used to give Sunday sermons about why the world needs The Kingdom of God to save it, and the highlight was nuclear waste. You can argue for man-made solutions to lots of problems, but nuclear waste is the trump card. You just can't get rid of the stuff. And it's the deadliest poison there is. Which is why my sister got into an argument with her teacher and avoided an F by addressing all the reasons why nuclear waste just can't be gotten rid of. So it was with great interest that I read this book and found a surprisingly entertaining history of radioactive fallout. You'll find a lot interesting stuff here, from radioactive tourism to natural preserves on the exclusion zones of fallout, to atom bombs and nuclear testing to leaking stockpiles around the world. There's a nicely balanced style of reporting here that shows both the exaggerations of people with radiophobia as well as the gung-ho attitudes of people who think that nuclear is great, despite it's insanely high price and horrific safety record. This is a light and breezy (ha!) read at 216 pages so you'll polish it off quick, but if you are interested in a brief history of the atomic age this is your book. Highly recommended to history buffs who are interested in the subject but don't want to read something too technical or a scare-mongering or marketing book.

FALLOUT: DISASTERS, LIES, AND THE LEGACY OF THE NUCLEAR AGE is a highly readable account of the damage inflicted on humans by nuclear explosions and disasters, starting with the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, and continuing through the year 2017. It offers a short but complete history of the Atomic Age.It’s filled with surprising-to-me facts. For example, everyone on the planet received nuclear fallout from the above-ground nuclear tests conducted from 1954-1963--the average human received 0.15 millisieverts (a tiny dose) in 1963 alone. Or, as another example, the best way to dispose of nuclear waste is to reprocess it to extract the plutonium--something that was routinely done when plutonium was used to produce atomic weapons, but that is NOT usually done now that plutonium is used to generate power. This book is a good choice for anyone who wants to get quickly up to speed on the past, present, and future of nuclear energy and nuclear weapons.

If you are curious about atomic weapons and atomic power, if you wonder what is acceptable exposure to radiation, if you wondered what happened at 3 mile island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima, if the question what to do about nuclear waste is something you have wondered about and most importantly if your attention span is compatible to getting your “in-depth news” from Twitter, this is the book for you. This is not to take away anything from this book it is just the subject matter is so broad and so vast that to attempt to cover it in 200 pages is laughable. You get zero details about anything listed above. But he does a good job citing sources to enhance what is barely touched upon it the book.

Radiation is invisible. You can't see, hear, or feel it. Too much of certain kinds will kill you. You have to rely on experts to tell you when radiation is dangerous. And the experts disagree. That is the repeated theme of this book. The first few chapters were both horrific and boring, because they're about early nuclear disasters in the Soviet Union, where little was known about radiation and news was covered up. Terrible things happened but they were far away, a long time ago. The last chapters are about nuclear waste, and equally horrific and boring. Terrible things could happen in the future, perhaps in thousands of years. Experts just don't know.In the middle were the good chapters. Rocky Flats is just a few miles from my house in Colorado, and I paid attention to the stories about plutonium fires. The fires were described in detail, down to the flammable plastic boxes and gloves used to make the bomb pits. Then the chapter about Windscale in the UK was equally detailed, explaining exactly what can go wrong in a nuclear power plant. Chernobyl and Fukushima were also presented clearly. The author proved his case that no expert can say exactly how dangerous any particular radiation is. He presents many cases of people and animals living long lives in nuclear zones. He presents other cases of nuclear disasters causing widespread thyroid cancer. We just don't know what is safe.

I found Fallout completely by chance and was glad that I did. The topic is something I have been intrigued about and a little freaked out by for some time. The book was very easy to read and with incredibly frightening and fascinating content. It really did a great job of painting the horrific picture of the nuclear age from warfare to civilian usage to clean-up. The depth of the research and quality of writing was perfect and easy for a beginner of this subject to understand. I devoured this book and really enjoyed it.

While there are certainly some interesting facts contained within the book, at 216 pages and with 27 chapters (if you include introduction and conclusion) then the average chapter is only 8 pages. Fallout therefore feels more like a stitched-together collection of newspaper articles than long narrative verity. The idea of low carbon baseload electricity has always appealed to me, but an industry fraught with secrecy, incompetence, long-term waste issues and 200-year decommissioning horizons just doesn't seem worth it anymore, with both Germany and France independently coming to the same conclusion.

This book looks at several nuclear catastrophes and the hype around them. Not everything is as the government or big business would want you to believe.

Loose Balls: Short, Wild Life of the American Basketball Association, by Terry Pluto

From Publishers Weekly

Pluto, sports journalist for the Akron (Ohio) Beacon Journal , coauthored such bestsellers as Forty-Eight Minutes , with Bob Ryan, and Tark , with Jerry Tarkanian. This time, however, he will disappoint his readers. The story of the ABA--which lasted from 1967 to 1976, spawned such stars as Julius Erving and Moses Malone, and originated the three-point shot as well as the annual slam-dunk contest--should be an absorbing one, but it falls victim to Pluto's odd approach. Having interviewed many of the owners, managers, players, officials and commentators involved in the league, he cuts up their comments into short snippets (some only two or three sentences long) and arranges them according to a roughly chronological scenario. The resulting discontinuous, herky-jerky text is difficult to follow. Photos not seen by PW. Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

The ABA was born in 1967 and in nine tumultuous seasons introduced such legendary stars as Julius Erving, Connie Hawkins, George Gervin, and Moses Malone. Pluto, a basketball writer for the Akron Beacon Journal , spins an irreverent history in interview format of the league with the three-point shot, the slam dunk contest, the red, white, and blue ball. The ABA saga includes unsettled finances, ever-changing teams, and constant war with the more established National Basketball Association. As well as the stars, we meet the owners (Earl Foreman, John Y. Brown, and Charles O. Finley), the coaches (Hubie Brown, brother Larry Brown, Bob Bass, and Slick Leonard), the bad boys (Warren Jabali and John Brisker), the characters (Wendell Ladner and Marvin Barnes), and dozens of others. Well-told by participants, this is a history laced with humor from a league filled with fun. A must for any basketball fan and highly recommended for all libraries.- Boyd Childress, Auburn Univ. Lib., Ala.Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I grew up with the Indiana Pacers and ABA basketball. If you have any interest in the old ABA that featured a red, white & blue ball and the three point shot, then I think you will enjoy this inside look at the old league that began in the 60s. It features comments from executives, investors, referees, coaches & players. Very well put together in my view. Basketball before political correctness and LeBron James INC. I still have my Freddie Lewis, Billy Keller, Bob Netolicky, Mel Daniels, Roger Brown, George McGinnis et al basketball cards. Roger Brown may be the most outstanding basketball player folks have never heard of. Also a shame the Kentucky Colonels never merged with the NBA but that story is in the book.

Loose Balls was written by Terry Pluto in 1990 documenting the short but eclectic life of the American Basketball Association. I read this book two years ago but I had to do a review. This book was very entertaining. Anyone who enjoys basketball from the 70's should pick it up. It is an easy read detailing the wild ride by players and owners of the upstart ABA. While not specifically written in a comedic manner the shenanigens pulled during the life of the ABA can't help but make you smile and even laugh. The book does a great job in detailing what went on in a league with crazy characters, future NBA stars, teams that were lucky to last a full season, and where nothing surprised you if it happened. This isn't a long review and is short on details but again pick it up if you have any interest whatsoever in basketball of that era, the ABA, or the NBA. You won't be disappointed.

The story of the ABA is a great one - a league that flew by the seat of its pants, had a lot of characters, and was a great innovator. A lot of players like Dr. J and Moses Malone got their start in the ABA. It also introduced the slam dunk contest and the unique red, white, and blue basketball.Pluto essentially takes a huge amount of content from interviews and weaves them into a series of chapters that capture the chronology of the ABA, its teams, and some of the core themes. He does a pretty good job of weaving together different voices to keep it interesting.

As a fan of the ABA, I grew up pretending to be be Roger "The Rajah" Brown and shot one-handed shots like George "Big Mac" McGinnis, I found this book to be fun and entertaining - back when basketball was still a sport and people treated it as such. There's too much money in the game now and people have lost all perspective. This book brings back the memories of guys making good money for the era, but not fortunes! The madness that was the ABA and the guys that played with a chip on their shoulders. Fun read!

Wonderful book - one of the best, informative sports books I can recall reading. Incredible information on all the zany characters, marketing efforts, ongoing franchise changes/relocations. Everything here including many famous NBA players who got their start in the ABA. Gilmore, Erving, McGinnis, Barry, Bobby Jones, Malone, etc - all figured greatly in this wonderful, brief league.ABA deserves a HELLUVA lot of credit for making NBA product better league when they merged the Spurs, Nets, Pacers and Nuggets into the league in 1977. The NBA was better for it...plus my 76ers were one of the chief beneficiaries with McGinnis, then Erving, and then Bobby Jones coming on board. In fact, the '82-83 NBA Champion Philly 76ers' best players were ALL former ABAers (Erving, Malone and Jones).Pluto does amazing job here...DEFINITELY read this if you're hardcore, old school (ie 60s/70s) pro basketball fan. Tremendously informative.

Hey, if you don't take MY word that this is an excellent read, refer to the 2002 Sportsman of the Year issue of Sports Illustrated. It has this in the top 100 sports books of all time.As a kid who had one of those ABA basketballs in the 70's this brought back a LOT of memories...It is the perfect book for someone on the go, or on a plane, or in other situations where a long drawn out read is not possible. It consists of short stories, woven together around various themes (the barnstorming nature of the ABA, tough guys in the league, etc.)The most AMAZING thing about this book is a picture of Julius Erving, during his rookie year, shooting a free throw for the Virginia Squires. If you look in the background, you can count the number of fans in the stands on ONE HAND. Can you imagine? The chance to see Julius Erving (who gets his own special section of this book) in his ROOKIE YEAR?Also, I never really knew the Connie Hawkins story until this book. Larry Brown, Dan Issel, Doug Moe, Zelmo Beaty, all your old ABA faves are here.Plus, for stat geeks, a list of all the seasons, the standings, playoff results, etc are contained. And pictures of the Miami Floridian 'ball girls' in tight-tights! :)

Not a bad book. I bought this after hearing a local radio personality recommend it. It definitely has some interesting information, and it gives you a good picture of what those ABA days must have been like. However, as some others have mentioned, the writer's style of delivery takes some getting used to. I think it could have been a better read with more time taken to weave everyone's recollections into a more cohesive narrative.

This was a gift to my daughter, an Episcopal priest. She began reading it immediately, couldn't put it down.

Long a fan of J. Chester Johnson's poetry, I grabbed this gem of a book for a long plane ride. Written with elegant prose (as only a poet can do) this story encompasses layers--a history within a history--of the Psalms to their current translation (on which Mr. Johnson worked) in the Book of Common Prayer. It is the story of Johnson's relationship with and to W.H. Auden on this translation project and it is a fascinating vetting of the opinions and agendas surrounding the project at the time. It is the history of the work of Miles Coverdale, the 16th century original translator of the Psalms to the English, whose imperfect--sometimes inaccurate--though poetic and (historically) beloved translation, which had stood until the current translation on which Auden and Johnson worked. A wonderfully engaging telling--rich with history from Johnson who is an integral part of this legacy.

This is an important and well-written book that I have long awaited reading. As an Episcopalian and a poet, Johnson's book about Auden and The Psalms reads to me as a living history about a text that is fundamental to the shaping of who we are in God's love and narrative. This book is concise, well written, and seeks to shine further light upon one of the most important works of all of English Literature. The stewardship that is described and documented here let's future generations understand just what is at stake within the realm of language. Exact words matter. Language helps define our humanity, and Johnson has done a deliberate and beautiful job of depicting the historic events surrounding the retranslation of the Psalms. Johnson is a beautiful writer and poet who takes great care, humility, and grace in his documenting of events. I am richer for having read this work, and I heartily recommend this book to people of all denominations and beliefs. The Psalms are the balm that sustain. Let us delight in the Lord and all the good he does through people.

The author has written an illuminating book about the retranslation of the Psalms of David undertaken by the Episcopal Church. As one of only two surviving members of the committee which the Episcopal Church put together for this project, Johnson brings a unique perspective to discuss the history of the psalms and the process by which the current version of the psalms contained in the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. He reveals his work with W H Auden on the project and includes in the book several letters from Auden about Auden's feelings on the process undertaken. Part history and part memoir, this book is a great read, informative, explanatory and personal. I learned so much from this book, as it contains information nowhere else available. I do not think any reader, Episcopal or not, would be disappointed with this book because of its historical and literary significance.

J. Chester Johnson, a poet, has written an insightful reminiscence of his work on drafting committee for the re-translation of the Psalms for the revised Episcopal Book of Common Prayer in the late 1960s and 1970s. In Auden, The Psalms, and Me, Johnson recounts his epistolary exchanges with W. H. Auden, whose seat on the committee Johnson occupied after Auden moved back to England. As the youngest and last surviving member of this committee, Johnson is in a unique position to defend the committee’s product, the updating of the version of the Psalms by Miles Coverdale, which had been used by the Anglican Communion for 400 years. He, and they, and W H. Auden did not take their work lightly, debating line by line the many possible modern versions of Coverdale’s translation, which itself was a re-translation, not from the original Hebrew but from the Greek and Latin. This short volume manages to incorporate several narratives. Johnson had previously published several shorter essays about his service on the committee and his contacts with Auden, but those accounts didn’t incorporate all the aspects of his experience. There is the story of a young poet who introduces himself to Auden and the committee chair and, improbably, lands a position among a group of eminent scholars, churchmen, musicians, and other experts, all his senior. Another is a discussion of numerous issues facing the re-translation committee, including the chief one of changing the text that Episcopalians had heard, sung, and recited for generations and that “cradle Episcopalians” knew in their bones. Dealing with Auden’s sometimes angry skepticism about the whole project (he wanted the Prayer Book to return to Latin) is another key part of the story. As a published poet, Johnson also explains the rhetorical and poetic nuances of both the Coverdale and modern versions of the Psalms. Finally, Johnson weaves autobiographical anecdotes into his narrative, illustrating passages from the Psalms with his experience growing up in rural Arkansas, as well as relating the Psalms to wider historical events. One that struck me in particular was his linking of the Babylonian Exile to the Holocaust and the Cherokee Trail of Tears. This book will be of interest to all Episcopalians but also to other Christians, and Jews, for whom the Psalms are central to their liturgies, rites, and personal devotion. It will certainly be of interest to readers and scholars of Auden. Johnson is modest about his own contributions to the re-translation process, but he has a strong point of view in favor of the ultimate product, despite the skeptics who mourn the superseding of the Coverdale Psalms, acknowledging that “it was W. H. Auden and those many other poets through whom I found my way to the plenitude, the simple, but conspicuous and unrelenting moment of words in the first place.”

One neither needs to be Episcopalian nor a poet to enjoy and learn from Johnson's most recent book. It is a clean, concise and cogent review of the latest translation of the Psalms. The book provides a glimpse at the basic issues and complexities of any translation process. This is a must-read for anyone interested in literary history. Students of language and ideas will find it edifying. Easy to read and thought provoking, it also sheds light on the intellectual and spiritual perspectives of W. H. Auden, one of the 20th century's most influential writers.
