Just took and passed this exam yesterday. I studied this book exclusively for about 50 hours over the past month. I used no other training materials, no test simulations, no classes - not even the PMBOK! I am fairly experienced, so your hours may vary, but everything you need to pass this test is in this book.First the book from an editorial view: I have taken literally dozens of IT certification exams and have used at least one book for every one. Most technical books, IMO, are written in a very sloppy fashion - typos, grammar seemingly from a language other than English, non-functioning code, etc. Not Rita's book. Rita's Exam Prep is easily the highest quality certification book I have ever read. I found only two errors in over 500 pages of real content! Ok, so now you know the book is well constructed, highly edited, and you can trust the content to be relatively error-free. Let me now explain about the actual content and how it matches to the test content (it's relevancy, if you will).Rita obviously understands the PMP content and exam objectives exceedingly well. But just as importantly, she understands how to present the material in a way that allows to reader to concentrate and absorb the important points. I have taught before and there is a world of difference between someone who knows the material and one who can actually teach others the material. In my opinion, this book is as good as it gets for those on a self-study certification path. If you follow her study plan, there is no reason for you to fail this exam.Out of the 200 questions on the exam, I would estimate that you should be able to successfully answer 180-190 of the questions with just Rita's book. You only need ~61% to pass, so you should have a high degree of confidence that you will pass this exam on the first try if you read and understand what Rita is presenting to you.One final note: I read where some people thought this book was expensive. This is a high-end certification and has a high-end testing fee to go along with it. You don't want to spend ~$500 on an exam and then skimp out on test preparation! Many people spend thousands on a class and won't walk away with as much knowledge as what is in this book. For what you are getting, this book is a bargain!
I bought this book based on recommendations here and other places and with it I recently passed the PMP exam. If you're only going to use one guide book, this one is probably the best one to purchase. The exercises are very helpful, the material is about as complete as one book can be, and the practice questions are helpful in preparation for the exam.I've read that some people attempted to take the PMP exam by using the PMBOK guide alone, which I find incredibly unfortunate - doing that will guarantee failure, since only about 65-70% of the material covered on the exam is found in the PMBOK guide. Remember, there are other "recommended readings" used as source for testing material, a list of which can be found on the PMI web site. Areas like motivation theories and names of the major quality gurus are only found through outside independent reading or a condensed guide book, like this one.Rita's book does a good job of covering all of your bases if your time is limited, but you will be even better prepared if you already have some background knowledge in the aforementioned areas. NOTE: Taking PMP exam with no project management knowledge or experience will be extremely difficult and maybe even impossible, considering the qualification requirements to sit for the exam - you need to have the verifiable experience, and they do conduct random audits of exam applications. As for the sample questions in Rita's book, I found them to be challenging - I was only scoring in the 60-70% range during practice sessions. Though passing the 200 question PMP only requires 61% correct on the actual 175 (versus the unknown 25 experimental) questions, to be fully prepared you really should be scoring closer to 75-80% in practice tests.Through Rita's book and a few other sources (Kim Heldman's book (I used her audio and a few practice questions only), Oliver Lehmann's web site, and the Brainbok web site), I was able to ramp up my knowledge quite a bit in the final push before the test. In addition to Rita's book I also used her testing software. As others pointed out, the book already comes with 400 questions, but the same 400 added to the total advertised in her testing software, so yeah, that felt like kind of a gyp. Nevertheless, you *should* have enough questions between just the book and other sources like the ones I mentioned, many of which are free online. But if you are like me and prefer to do as many questions as possible (the same approach I used for the bar exam), then the Rita's testing software may also be worth a look - but it is considerably more money than the book. I did not use Rita's audio guides nor did I think they would be worth the price advertised on her web site - too much other, good material like that is available for much less money (Heldman's book has a good audio and practice question CD in the back).Rita's book has a LOT of exercises along the way, and I confess I did not do all of them, but I did do the process game and mini-flash cards. These are critical, especially her process game. The process game breaks down page 43 of the PMBOK guide into a much more logical and understandable version. If you download the test content outline from the PMI web site (for free), that outline will initially not make much sense, but after studying Rita's game for weeks it was easy to see that the outline was where she got the idea for the process game (or maybe vice versa-?) Anyway, they compliment each other and the PMI outline is very helpful during the final week of study for an overall review of the material. One thing to remember, the exam will be changing significantly at the end of August 2011, so much that Rita will most likely publish a new edition of this book. She's advertising specials on her existing material right now, so that should tell you something. The new PMP will integrate the professional responsibility questions into questions involving other subjects, or so I understand. Overall, 30% of the test will change, this according to a webinar I recently watched. The PMBOK itself will NOT change, however. As far as accuracy, this book is mostly on top of things. Rita's material in this book only differentiated from other sources in one small area that I noticed - Time and Materials contracts. Rita claimed that a Cost Reimbursable type of contract was the most risky for the buyer, but other sources insisted that T&M was more risky for the buyer. I don't know which is right, but nuances like this are important for the exam. I hope Rita clarifies this in her new edition.Good luck, and don't take this test lightly - it's no joke.
