The Glenn Cowan's book is one of the best books I ever read about statistical data analysis in experimental physics. The explanations are clear and easy to follow (much better than the Eadie's book, with comparable level). The book has a complete description on how to calculate confidences intervals, not only in the trivial scenarios where the normal approximation can be used, but in situation where this approximation do not hold even in situation when the user wants a side of this interval (like in the estimation of the neutrino mass). The final chapter of the book is dedicated to "unfolding", a topic largely ignored in books about the same class. No book is perfect and, in my opinion, the faults of this are:1. The chapter about statistical test could be improved with more detailed explanations.2. There are very few examples inside although these, all about particle physics, are very interesting.3. There is a need to explain the practical implantation of the algorithms discussed, the author only mention the names of some routines from the CERN.
A must read, especially if you work in data analysis. With some focus on high energy physics. I think we have about 4 copies of that one laying around in our office, it's almost a classic.
Just what I was looking for... a clear concise presentation of basic statistical analysis for collected data... a companion to my copy of Analysis of Experimental Data.
This book is succint, 187 pages excluding the bibliography. It starts from scratch (no statistical background) introduces the relative frequency and Bayesian (subjective) interpretations of probability. Both viewpoints are given throughout the book, where appropriate. The last chapter is a very useful treatment of deconvolution in the presence of limited resolution of a measuring device, and it makes the connection to image restoration.Time series analysis is not included. The author's background is particle physics, and he works at CERN. Many examples come from that arena, but the presentation is definitely more accessible to an engineer, physicist or chemist than the numerous treatments by financial analysts and social scientists.
I found the book to be a clear introduction into the basic terminology and concepts of statistics.
