This is a short story collection by the great writer Alastair Reynolds. Fantastic collection with most of the great stories here. It has most of the famous tales:"Great Wall of Mars" - a Revelation Space tale"Beyond the Aquila Rift" - have you ever dialed a wrong number - or misentered a web site address and ended up somewhere strange and amazing. Imagine doing so in space flight."Minla's Flower" - a story that Trekkers and the Prime Directive would appreciate."Fury" - a great story and underappreciated."Diamond Dogs" - a story about obsession and linked with other short stories in Revelation Space. A novella length tale - should be read with "Turquoise Days" [found elsewhere]and several others.

This is a great book. I enjoyed some stories more than others, but all are worth reading. Some highlights for me: Diamond Dogs, a goth/horror alien artifact stroy, "The Old Man and the Martian Sea" a very elegiac tale about the past and what it means to us,"Sleepover" about a man who wakes from cryogenics into a very weird and grim future. What I love about Reynolds shorts is that he always manages to tell a full self contained story with a developed ark. No mood or style experiments for him, no pointless exercises: STORY rules above all here, and his imagination for space opera scenarios knows no limits.

I'm an Alastair Reynolds fan and highly recommend his work to any fan of grand space opera. What's particularly great about this selection is it begins with a story that sets the scene for Reynold's exemplar Revelation/Redemption/Absolution trilogy (or quadilogy if "Chasm City" is included) and hopefully will encourage new readers to explore his fictive universe which seamlessly incorporates both hard and soft sciences.

I'm a big AR fan. The namesake story of this book is truly excellent. Also, "Minla's Flowers" (a Merlin story) and "Thousandth Night" are both part of this collection and must-reads for those who go on to read from AR's novels. Great stuff.

be prepared to read in one or two all-night bites. The author's usual brilliant story-telling, backed by a predictive, hard science approach; produces immersive, surprisingly intimate stories woven against far-flung galactic and space time backdrops.

Alastair Reynolds give new meaning to the sci-fi space opera he hits every note and they ring true to form as in the vein of the great sci-fi masters!!!

A plethora of short stories, all of which will stretch your horizons. Travel from a reunion of a galaxy-spanning family, to a sunken city in the seas of Mars. Enjoy the trips, as I did.

I am biased in favor of original scifi and alastair reynolds leads the pack

Interpreter of Maladies, by Jhumpa Lahiri

Amazon.com Review

Mr. Kapasi, the protagonist of Jhumpa Lahiri's title story, would certainly have his work cut out for him if he were forced to interpret the maladies of all the characters in this eloquent debut collection. Take, for example, Shoba and Shukumar, the young couple in "A Temporary Matter" whose marriage is crumbling in the wake of a stillborn child. Or Miranda in "Sexy," who is involved in a hopeless affair with a married man. But Mr. Kapasi has problems enough of his own; in addition to his regular job working as an interpreter for a doctor who does not speak his patients' language, he also drives tourists to local sites of interest. His fare on this particular day is Mr. and Mrs. Das--first-generation Americans of Indian descent--and their children. During the course of the afternoon, Mr. Kapasi becomes enamored of Mrs. Das and then becomes her unwilling confidant when she reads too much into his profession. "I told you because of your talents," she informs him after divulging a startling secret. I'm tired of feeling so terrible all the time. Eight years, Mr. Kapasi, I've been in pain eight years. I was hoping you could help me feel better; say the right thing. Suggest some kind of remedy. Of course, Mr. Kapasi has no cure for what ails Mrs. Das--or himself. Lahiri's subtle, bittersweet ending is characteristic of the collection as a whole. Some of these nine tales are set in India, others in the United States, and most concern characters of Indian heritage. Yet the situations Lahiri's people face, from unhappy marriages to civil war, transcend ethnicity. As the narrator of the last story, "The Third and Final Continent," comments: "There are times I am bewildered by each mile I have traveled, each meal I have eaten, each person I have known, each room in which I have slept." In that single line Jhumpa Lahiri sums up a universal experience, one that applies to all who have grown up, left home, fallen in or out of love, and, above all, experienced what it means to be a foreigner, even within one's own family. --Alix Wilber

From Publishers Weekly

The rituals of traditional Indian domesticityAcurry-making, hair-vermilioningAboth buttress the characters of Lahiri's elegant first collection and mark the measure of these fragile people's dissolution. Frequently finding themselves in Cambridge, Mass., or similar but unnamed Eastern seaboard university towns, Lahiri's characters suffer on an intimate level the dislocation and disruption brought on by India's tumultuous political history. Displaced to the States by her husband's appointment as a professor of mathematics, Mrs. Sen (in the same-named story) leaves her expensive and extensive collection of saris folded neatly in the drawer. The two things that sustain her, as the little boy she looks after every afternoon notices, are aerograms from homeAwritten by family members who so deeply misunderstand the nature of her life that they envy herAand the fresh fish she buys to remind her of Calcutta. The arranged marriage of "This Blessed House" mismatches the conservative, self-conscious Sanjeev with ebullient, dramatic TwinkleAa smoker and drinker who wears leopard-print high heels and takes joy in the plastic Christian paraphernalia she discovers in their new house. In "A Real Durwan," the middle-class occupants of a tenement in post-partition Calcutta tolerate the rantings of the stair-sweeper Boori Ma. Delusions of grandeur and lament for what she's lostA"such comforts you cannot even dream them"Agive her an odd, Chekhovian charm but ultimately do not convince her bourgeois audience that she is a desirable fixture in their up-and-coming property. Lahiri's touch in these nine tales is delicate, but her observations remain damningly accurate, and her bittersweet stories are unhampered by nostalgia. #7,092 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This collection of short stories published in1999 is written by a gifted writer. All stories concern the experience of first or second generation Indians ( from Asia, not the Americas). The work is more or less autobiographical. The author is thoughtful, although her young men tend to be selfish and self absorbed, as are some of the young women. In many stories, duty obscures personal needs and ignores individuality, so honored in theory in. USA society ( at least was prior to mass media, Facebook, et al. and the imposition of "correct thinking" in schools at all levels)The meaning of marriage is returned to over and over. The matter of love, the dislocation of the immigrant experience, the role of longing in life are all explored. The cruelty towards the dispossessed in India is addressed. The therapeutic nature of being able to love and care for someone is understood. The silliness of collecting religious artifacts without also understanding and accepting their spiritual foundation is exposed.I do quarrel with one premise present in the story, "When Mr. Prizada came to dinner". The author appears to believe that learning about the American Revoluion in elementary school should give place to current event war. In her case, the 1971 Packistan civil war. This thinking, all too common among those who attended schools after mandatory courses in Civics were abolished, reveals a basic misunderstanding of the cause of the War of 1776. The American War was not based on religious animosity or ancient tribal hatreds, but on intellectual beliefs in the nature of and rights under British law. It is the only war, I know of where the men who began it pledged, "their lives, their property and their sacred honor" and where so many impoverished themselves in its pursuit. Ms. Lahiri's excellent education missed American history ( prior to its present "woe is me" incarnation). With this objection aside, this is a surprisingly mature book and so beautifully written.

This is a collection of stories about the lives of Indian and Indian-Americans who are nostalgic for their home on the other side of the world but are also trying very hard to adjust to their life in their adopted country. The book was first published in 1999 and it won the Pulitzer and the Hemingway /PEN award. The nine stories in the book are:1. A Temporary Matter : A happy couple, Shukumar and Shoba who are hard-working Indian-Americans, lose their baby, and through their grief, they are alienated from each other. Environment in the background, such as the electrical power, the candles, and Indian food, provides the mood of this story.2. When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine: This story reflects the feelings of innocent people from a personal level on both sides of a complicated political struggle. Told from the ten-year old Lilia’s point of view, this story tells of the concerns of immigrants for their old countries. Mr. Pirzada, from Pakistan, is friends with Lilia’s parents and visits them often, bringing sweets to the girl. He is concerned of the safety of his daughters back home, as things can go awry during a war. Since Lilia is a second-generation American, she views all this with deep emotion, yet childish understanding, and she misses Mr. Pirzada when he leaves for Pakistan.3. Interpreter of Maladies: An Indian-American couple visit their old country and hire a tour-guide as their driver. The driver talks about his other job as an interpreter in a doctor’s office. Something resembling a romance starts to develop between the wife and the driver. In the story each character is flawed in some way and sees the others from a mistaken angle, and each character ends up feeling disappointed.4. A Real Durwan: The Durwan, a stair-sweeper of an old apartment building who is an old woman, attracts the pity and the kindness of the residents, since she does this work without expecting anything. The old woman feels just as strongly about the residents and the building, as well. When a sink in the stairway is stolen, however, the residents turn their backs on the old woman, kick her out of the building and start looking for a “real Durwan.”5. Sexy: Miranda and Laxmi work for a public radio station in Boston. Miranda is having an affair with Dev, an older, married Indian man. At work she hears Lami’s phone calls through her cubicles. Laxmi’s cousin’s husband is having an affair, and the grief of it has made the cousin unable to care for her son. When The cousin comes to visit Laxmi, Miranda babysits for her son, Rohin. Laxmi’s cousin is the victim of infidelity. It is through her stories that Miranda starts to feel and then face her own guilt and aimlessness.6. Mrs. Sen's: An eleven year-old boy is babysat by Mrs. Sen in her own home. Mrs. Sen is a university professor’s wife who is homesick for her native land and is obsessed with objects like her special vegetable cutting blade and fish from the market. She also resists to attempt to the new country and learning to drive. One day, on a whim, she drives to the market on her own and has an accident with the boy in the car. Afterwards, the boy stops staying with her.7. This Blessed House: An Indian-American couple, newly married, try to adjust to each other and their new house, which was owned by a fanatically religious Christian people who left artifacts hidden inside the house. The clash of cultures and the young couple’s ineptitude to accept each other’s different qualities are highlighted in this story.8. The Treatment of Bibi Haldar: Bibi Haldar is a twenty-nine year-old spinster who has a strange ailment. From the descriptions of her symptoms in the story, she suffers from seizures. The cure is marriage, the doctors have said, and that’s what Bibi Haldar wants, but despite all the efforts, she lacks the qualities of being marriage-able. Bibi keeps the inventory of her brother's cosmetics stall, but when the brother’s wife becomes pregnant, she is afraid Bibi will infect her unborn child. When a daughter is born to her and the child becomes ill, a seriously prejudiced treatment of Bibi begins. Women of the community sympathizing with Bibi stop their purchases from the brother, causing the brother to go bankrupt, leave his store, and move out. Bibi is left to live in the storage room, which she fixes to make it livable. Then it is discovered that Bibi is pregnant, but the father of the baby is a mystery for she might have been attacked during a seizure. The women help her with the care of her son and Bibi starts her own business with the old wares of his brother’s store and manages to raise her son on her own, with her ailment now cured.9. The Third and Final Continent: An Indian-descent young man, a newcomer to the United States from London, rents a room from a quirky old woman in Cambridge, Mass. After living with her for six weeks, he feels attached to her. When the young man’s new wife arrives from India, he moves out to an apartment in the campus of MIT. As he is trying to adjust to his wife, whom he doesn’t know well, the old woman dies. After a while, the young man starts feeling love for his wife, but he also remembers the old woman, as she was the first person he liked in the new country, which started his adaptation process to USA.This book not only it gives a glimpse into another culture, but also, it is a learning experience if the reader can analyze and interpret it with a discerning eye.

Interpreter of Maladiesby Jhumpa LahiriRating: ***** (5 stars)Book Length: 209 pagesGenre: Indian Fiction, Fiction, Litterature, Short StoriesInterpreter of Maladies is a collection of short stories written by Jhumpa Lahiri. All the stories feature Indian characters. Most stories also include the complex dynamics between Indian culture and American culture. Although some stories are placed directly in India and focus more on the complexity within the Indian culture.Lahiri's novel was a fascinating read. Each story was unique and beautifully written. I was captured from the beginning to the end. The characters were so well defined that I was able to not only picture them but to live behind their eyes. I felt the longing for a country that I have never even seen. I felt appreciation for community and togetherness that, as the author also illustrated, just doesn't exist in America. I also witnessed how two people who never met fell in love while another couple walked away from everything. My favorite aspect of the book is the diversity of the stories and characters. Each story is unique and every character has their own story and personality. Everytime a story ended I was reluctant to leave their lives. I highly recommend that you pick this book up!As reviewed on The Book Recluse Review.

I am not a short story reader, but the book club required Maladies, and I always am willing to read new ideas in book club. Each story gave you something to think about. I found the author to have great insight into her characters and I would have a different reaction to each one. Some made me sad, others, more angry at injustices. I would not call the stories happy, especially when they could have been. It was a melancholy and extremely thought provoking book.

I'm not a big reviewer. I find writing a challenge, even if it's a positive experience, as it is now. I started learning Java a few months ago and bought a number of books on the topics I needed to really create a java website.I stumbled on this book as one of the ten or so I purchased.I haven't touched the other's since. This book has it all, written so clearly that you know the author is very familiar with her subject and understands it thouroughly. It was written in 2003 and discusses Tomcat server as release 4.0 but that does not matter one bit. I was truly able to use this book to put together a website. Servlet, jsp, even java script is covered. I found many questions I had assembled reading the other books being answered in this one.Murach's books should be proud of this and I notice that they don't publish a 100 books on a subject; just have a few. I'll bet they're just as good.

A good book. Not for someone looking for a "tutorial" or "introduction" on the subjects covered. However, a good reference book to find examples of specific programming problems for someone who already has a good understanding of servlets and JSP. Covers a good number of different aspects of servlet/JSP programming. I also found it a good book to convey some general knowledge in areas like using attributes, DB access, etc. I enjoyed selectively reading different chapters.

This book is exactly what it claims to be: a general reference to hundreds of "everyday" situations Java Web developers face. Just as any cookbook, it doesn't go into the "deepest" details about every little thing, and it does give examples of ways to not reinvent the wheel. Some reviewers see this as worthy of only 1 star... This is only a 1 star book for readers who like to reinvent the wheel and waste time on unnecessary details... if you're like me and have deadlines to meet, you'll find what you need here quickly and efficiently.

Target AudienceWeb developers who are looking for real-life examples of the use of servlets and JSP.ContentsThis is a companion-type book that goes beyond strictly reference material to the use of different servlet and JSP features, along with working examples of code to illustrate the concepts. The book is divided multiple chapters that each cover a different technique or function:Writing Servlets and JSPs; Deploying Servlets and JSPs; Naming Your Servlets; Using Apache Ant; Altering the Format of JSPs; Dynamically Including Content In Servlets and JSPs; Handling Web Form Data in Servlets and JSPs; Uploading Files; Handling Exceptions in Web Applications; Reading And Setting Cookies; Session Tracking; Integrating JavaScript with Servlets And JSPs; Sending Non-HTML Content; Logging Messages from Servlets and JSPs; Authenticating Clients; Binding, Accessing, and Removing Attributes in Web Applications; Embedding Multimedia in JSPs; Working With The Client Request; Filtering Request and Responses; Managing Email In Servlets and JSPs; Accessing Databases; Using Custom Tag Libraries; Using The JSTL; Internationalization; Using JNDI and Enterprise JavaBeans; Harvesting Web Information; Using the Google and Amazon Web APIsReviewI really like the O'Reilly Cookbook series. I read a lot as part of my ongoing study, and often it's easy to understand conceptually what is going on. But making the jump to practical solutions can be difficult at times. The Cookbook series gets plenty of use on my bookshelf as I do my day to day coding. And when it comes to servlet and JSP coding as I continue to learn more about Websphere Application Server, this book will surely become dog-eared like the rest of them. Bruce Perry has done a great job.As with most Cookbook titles, each chapter in the Servlet And JSP Cookbook is made up of a number of Problem/Solution/Discussion groupings. This format proposes a coding problem, states the solution to solve it, and then devotes the necessary space to discuss the solution both with text and code. By using this format, you can think through a working solution and determine how to apply that technique to your own problem. Perry covers a wide range of problems that will help both the beginner and the experienced coder. For beginners, the solutions for setting cookies with servlets and JSPs may be just what you need to get started. Experienced people will find the internationalization and JNDI/Enterprise JavaBeans solutions useful. I appreciate the fact that coders of all experience levels can get something out of this book. The only caveat I have on this book is that it is very focused on the Tomcat and WebLogic web application servers. If that's your platform of choice, you're going to get everything this book has to offer. For me, I'm partial to the WebSphere platform. While I will benefit from a lot of this book, there are chapters that will have no appeal to me, such as using the Ant package. I will also need to pay attention to the coding examples to make sure that the techniques are coded correctly for my platform of choice. Even with that warning, I would still highly recommend this book to all coders working in this area.ConclusionThis is definitely a title that will be useful to you as you learn more about servlet and JSP programming. It will give you the ideas you need to solve real business problems you'll encounter as a developer.

As some other reviewer pointed out (read his reveiw for details), the examples are based on Oreilly's Library, the realy nitty-gritty stuff is completely skipped. I think author is cuckoo, to beleive he expects most of his readers to pay for this joke of a book. I paid four dollars and fifty cents for it (second hand) .... about right price.

The Hacking of the American Mind: The Science Behind the Corporate Takeover of Our Bodies and Brains, by Robert H. Lustig

Review

"Our health, resistance to disease, and ability to function on a day-to-day basis have essentially been hijacked, all in the name of corporate profits. Dr. Lustig explores how industry has manipulated our most deep-seated survival instincts to motivate our food choices in a way that directly undermines our ability to survive. But more importantly, The Hacking of the American Mind eloquently reveals how we can disengage from this influence and re-establish ourselves on a path to wellness." —David Perlmutter, MD, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller, Grain Brain and Brain Maker“A provocative, persuasive plea to stop seeking the wrong kind of happiness. Take it from the neuroscientist/endocrinologist who sounded the alarm about sugar: chasing rewards is far less rewarding than finding contentment.”—Adam Grant, author of New York Times bestsellers Originals and Give and Take, and coauthor of the New York Times bestseller Option B"Robert Lustig takes on one of the greatest paradoxes of our time: how can it be that we have more sources of pleasure than ever before in human history, and yet are increasingly sick, broke, and unhappy? By deftly weaving together neuroscience, history, economics, and more, he provides a much-needed explanation of how the 'pernicious peddling of pleasure' causes real happiness to elude so many of us — and also provides a desperately needed roadmap for escaping the pleasure trap." —Sharon Begley, coauthor of the New York Times best seller The Emotional Life of Your Brain"Pleasure and happiness are not the same thing – as our addictions to everything from unhealthy food to cellphones show. In this book, Dr. Lustig unpacks the science of pleasure versus happiness to explain the true causes of the last 40 years of addiction, depression, and disease. The good news is that the solution is easy — well, maybe not so easy — put down your cellphone. And sleep. You’ll be happier, and you’ll live longer!"—Arianna Huffington, author of the New York Times best seller The Sleep Revolution"Dr. Robert Lustig examines our culture of illness, an industry-created fog that, despite our best efforts to cope, has left us stressed, isolated, addicted, and depressed. With The Hacking of the American Mind, he empowers us with the science of mind, brain, and love in a delightful, insightful, and humorous way. You can live by pursuing pleasure, sugar-coated as 'happiness,' or you can read this book."   —Elissa Epel, coauthor of the New York Times best seller The Telomere Effect

I am the editor and founder of the most visited natural health site on the web and had the opportunity to review Dr. Lustig’s book and interview him before it was published. He is perhaps best known for his brilliant research into sugar and obesity. His previous book, “Fat Chance:” was a New York Times Best Seller. Lustig is an emeritus professor of pediatrics in the division of endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco, and a member of the Institute for Health Policy Studies. His motivation for “writing the book began 30 years ago, while still a postdoctoral fellow in neuroscience at Rockefeller University. There, he learned about the interaction between dopamine and serotonin in the brain. At the time, only basic correlational data existed, but there appeared to be a very specific interaction going on between these two neurochemicals. The book discusses how many try to bolster their happiness through certain food choices, but this actually does not work, and Lustig provides compelling arguments that the foods you crave drive up dopamine and drive down serotonin. Rather, it’s experiences that make you happy. People can make you happy. You can make yourself happy. In his book, Lustig outlines a number of different strategies to become happier. Ultimately, the goal is [to increase] your serotonin,” he says. There are four ways to boost your serotonin, and they’re all free. They’re also things your grandmother likely told you to do. First and foremost is making human connections.Social media generate dopamine, associated with pleasure, and hence can drive addiction. The main problem is that when dopamine goes up, serotonin goes down. So, online communication is actually a major causative factor of unhappiness. Lustig also elaborates on how companies — both food manufacturers and electronics companies — capitalize on the biology of dopamine versus serotonin to get us addicted to their products. It’s important to realize that the dopamine (or reward-generating) pathway is the same no matter what your source of pleasure is. It can be a substance, such as nicotine, alcohol, heroin or junk food; or it can be behavior, such as internet surfing, shopping or pornography. The problem, in a nutshell, is that dopamine is an excitatory neurotransmitter, and in excess is neurotoxic. When dopamine is released, and the neuron on the other side accepts the signal, it can damage that neuron. Over time, excitatory neurotransmitters can cause cell death. To protect itself from damage, the postsynaptic neuron employs a self-protective mechanism — it downregulates its receptors.By having fewer receptors, the dopamine cannot do as much damage. So, each time you get a “hit” or rush of dopamine, the number of receptors decrease. As a result, you need increasingly larger doses or “hits” to get the same rush. Eventually, you end up with tolerance, a state where even a large dose produces no effect. Once the neurons start to actually die off, you’re a full-blown addict. Serotonin, on the other hand, is not an excitatory neurotransmitter. When it acts on the serotonin-1a receptor (the “contentment” receptor), no damage occurs. Hence, happiness does not lead to addictive behavior. Keep in mind that dopamine downregulates serotonin, so it’s basically impossible to achieve happiness (related to serotonin) through pleasure-seeking behavior (related to dopamine). One of the cheapest pleasures that stimulates dopamine is sugar. Many reach for sweet junk food when they feel down, thinking it’ll help them feel better, but neurochemical science reveals this simply cannot happen. Add the stress hormone cortisol to the mix, which downregulates the serotonin-1a receptor, and you have a recipe for both addiction and depression. That’s what we’re seeing throughout all of civilized society, not just in America, but around the world. There are three other ways, besides connecting, that boost serotonin and happiness. The remaining three of the four C’s are:1. Contribute: Meaning the act of contributing to something greater than yourself; making a contribution to society. “You can get happiness and contentment from your job, but there are certain criteria that have to be met,” Lustig says. “Most people, unfortunately, have a boss who is not contributing to their happiness. The workplace is not usually the best place to achieve meaningful contentment.”2. Cope: Lack of sleep, insufficient exercise and multitasking are all causes of unhappiness. Sleep is extremely important for healthy serotonin production. Here, avoiding exposure to electronic screens is important, as blue light inhibits melatonin production, thereby making sleep more elusive. Electronics will also disrupt your sleep and deteriorate your health by exposing you to unnecessary microwaves, discussed in this recent article on depression.3. Cook: If you cook, you’re likely going to increase your tryptophan, reduce your refined sugar intake, and increase your omega-3 fats (anti-inflammatory) and fiber. Overall, this will result in improved gut health, which has tremendous impact on your mood and mental health. How do you boost systemic tryptophan? One of the keys is to eat real food, and to make sure you include high-tryptophan foods, the highest of which is egg whites. You also need omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA, which is a component of every cell in your body. More than 90 percent of the omega-3 fat found in brain tissue is DHA.So, how do you boost systemic tryptophan? One of the keys is to eat real food, and to make sure you include high-tryptophan foods, the highest of which is egg whites. You also need omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA, which is a component of every cell in your body. More than 90 percent of the omega-3 fat found in brain tissue is DHA. Omega-3s are probably the single most beneficial thing you can put in your body. They are anti-inflammatory. They are anti-Alzheimer’s. They increase membrane fluidity. Therefore, they increase neuronal distensibility, which means it’s less likely that any given neuron will die.The problem, of course, is that when we took the fat out of the food, we took ALL the fat out of the food. It’s been a real chore to get the medical cognoscenti to turn around on this. I do want to do a shout out to the American Heart Association, because they have now debunked their long-standing cholesterol-fat hypothesis. They now recognize that saturated fat was not the demon they made it out to be, and that there are seven classes of fats, and that you actually have to consume omega-3s. You have to consume monounsaturated fats. In fact, you do have to consume some saturated fat because it’s a major component of membranes.Processed fructose, mostly in the form of corn syrup, has become a major contributor to the $3 trillion health care budget in the United States, and there’s clear data linking sugar consumption to de novo lipogenesis — a disease process associated with fat accumulation in the liver, causing insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, metabolic syndrome and associated diseases. That includes Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, lipid problems, cardiovascular disease, cancer and dementia. In the past, people had a much better understanding of happiness and pleasure. Lustig’s book describes how these terms have been purposely conflated and confused by businesses and governments because it helped sales. To turn the trends of addiction around, you have to understand the difference between the two.So, what’s the difference between pleasure and happiness? There are seven differences: Pleasure is visceral; happiness is ethereal. Pleasure is short-term; happiness is long-term. Pleasure is usually achieved alone; happiness is usually achieved in social groupings. Pleasure is taking; happiness is giving. Pleasure can be achieved with substances; happiness cannot be achieved with substances. The extremes of pleasure all lead to addiction, whereas there is no such thing as being addicted to happiness. Finally, pleasure is dopamine and happiness is serotonin.Understanding the difference between the two is something, for some reason, that the American public just never got. We have to make them get it in order to turn this problem around. Academics don’t get it. Businesses don’t get it.The federal government certainly doesn’t get it. We have to make them get it. That’s why this book is so crucial. This book will help you understand the distinction between dopamine, serotonin and the variables that help optimize these neurotransmitters. Most importantly, the way he explains it all has the power motivate healthy behavior. The bottom line is it’s about the science. There will be detractors who will say this is garbage. But the bottom line is there are 600 references to the primary literature to demonstrate that this is not gobbledygook. The science actually predicts the phenomena that we see and the society we’ve become.

The information in this book made a ton of sense, and it instantly opened my eyes to many of my behaviors and many less than ideal qualities of my environment. Not only that, these revelations were instantly actionable. I feel liberated. This is a powerful book: it will point you toward an achievable path to wellness and it will show you what has steered you wrong, why you got steered wrong in the first place, and what you can do about it. I gasped several times as Dr. Lustig unveiled mysteries that have flummoxed me for years. I'll be buying this book to give to my loved ones at Christmas. This book is one of the important one, folks: get it.

Dr. Lustig distills his core message in the epilogue: "The keys to benefit from pleasure and happiness are to understand the differences between the two, because even though pleasure and happiness are not mutually exclusive, they can still be opposites."I would add that the key to benefit from this book is not to think that you already understand that sentence. Yes, it does sound like a vaguely new-ageish truism, but it most certainly is not.Lustig redefines pleasure and happiness from neurological and endocrinological perspectives. I was familiar with most of the concepts that he uses, but the combination was still a revelation and it had an instant effect. I haven't read many books that have changed my behaviour within 24 hours. This is a very important book, so it doesn't matter at all that it isn't perfect. I didn't find Lustig's own recommendations for behaviour change very convincing or useful. For me his scientific philosophy was more actionable than his practical advice. I also felt that his political views had a strong content but a relatively weak presentation. The headline point of "the corporate takeover" would have benefited from deeper analysis, but Lustig is a doctor, not a political scientist.Nevertheless, The Hacking of the American Mind has the potential to clarify and rearrange some core elements of our cultural self-image. The book already un-hacked my mind quite effectively. If there is a way to give higher praise, I don't know it.

Amazon.com Review

Suspicion naturally arises when you read a promo line on a back cover that says, "This is the most important book concerning the Great Pyramid written in the last 20 years." In this case, however, it may be fact. In writing The Giza Power Plant, mechanical engineer Christopher Dunn reverse-engineered the Great Pyramid at Giza to discover its use. His startling conclusions blow the heck out of traditional Egyptology's rather silly notions that it was built with copper tools by a society that lacked the wheel. While revisionist pyramid studies are rife with ridiculous theories that give the topic a bad name, The Giza Power Plant takes into account existing fact and artifact without having to rely on unprovable assertions. A must-read for truth seekers who aren't afraid to consider the idea that Western culture of the 21st century may not be the pinnacle of human evolution and achievement. --P. Randall Cohan

"Chris Dunn ranks among the top researchers on this subject. His book is extremely well-researched and presented and, although very controversial in content and conclusions, will no doubt become a landmark and classic in the field of pyramid studies." At last a voice of reason! Every once in a while a fresh view on something old finally comes along. I read this book with relish. Mr. Dunn is no dummy and he knows his stuff. I have ready many books on the pyramids and some of them I throw across the room in disgust--not this one!It is amazing how the "Main Streamists" insist that the pyramids of Giza were tombs when no body has ever been found inside them. They are not decorated inside like a tomb--not built like a tomb. Mr. Dunn is right as far as I am concerned. His arguments make so much sense and he backs them up with his knowledge of engineering.Mr. Dunn has undoubtedly taken a lot of flack and criticism for his views as has Robert Schock. These two men have risked their reputations, tenure, etc. to speak out. A new voice is always listened to with suspicion. Hats off to the men and women of the fresh voice who take us forward to new theories and new knowledge. Thank you, Mr. Dunn, for your forthright opinions and years of research trying to bring us kicking and screaming into a new realm of possibility. This is a wonderful book and an amazing book. I am awed by it!

First; a brief comment about another reviewer. I was looking over some of the old reviews before publishing mine, and out of curiosity I read a 'One-Star' review that was particularly harsh (not to mention lengthy) on Mr. Dunn's work. What I find most disturbing is the fact that it was written by the co-author (Marge Morris) of 'The Pyramids an Enigma Solved." This is a book that I have read and found to be intellectually stimulating, well written and relevant. What I find most distasteful is the fact that this fellow researcher and author, would use this forum to dismiss Mr. Dunn's hard work and research, and then go to great length to promote hers. I would like to believe (since we are all striving to better understand the mysteries of the ancient world), that there is room for more than one theory. Particularly when we are dealing with something as enigmatic and controversial as this subject appears to be. I am sure that Mr. Dunn has had to develop a thick skin over the ensuing years, due to the provocative and novel, leading edge ideas he has posited.Even though her particular review was written many years ago. it is still no less than small-minded, self-promoting, and above all unnecessary.Okay (now that I have that off my chest); this book was published in 1998 and I didn't get around to reading it until 2012, which means I'm a bit behind the 'Power' curve (pun not withstanding), yet as they say "better late than never." I'm so glad this book finally came to my attention and that I took the time to read it. That may have been due to seeing Mr. Dunn on the History channel being interviewed for the show "Ancient Aliens" (a popular show with an unfortunate name that implies everything has something to do with aliens, which I question but do not dismiss completely; I just think there are perhaps other alternatives?). I have also heard Mr. Dunn's interviews on the Coast to Coast late night talk show as well as 'youtube' videos of his presentations and have always found him to be intelligent, forthright and sensible. I would be remiss if I did not add that other theories aside, his appears to bring us much closer to some ultimate understanding of what this mighty edifice of precision engineered stone is all about.I have had the good fortune to have actually taken the tour inside the Great Pyramid of Giza, as a serving member of the USAF back in the mid-nineties. It left indelible impressions on me, and my regret is that as a young man I did not have the understanding or appreciation of Egyptian culture and her monuments, that I now have some twenty years later, after much reading and research on the subject. Back then my understanding of Egypt and her history was based on what I had seen in movies or on TV. Having made that clear, I very well remember walking (more like a stooped crouch as I recall) awkwardly up the ascending corridor and wondering why was it necessary to have a makeshift wooden ramp with cross-members to help tourists and the general public safely ascend to the Grand Gallery; could not the architects have incorporated stairs? Although I did not dwell on such a trivial (to some) issue at the time (due to the overwhelming sensory input akin to a child exploring a mysterious place for the first time), however I was subliminally aware that something was amiss; something did not add up?I was further baffled by the strange configuration of the Grand Gallery, with its odd architecture of corbelled sides rising up and towards each other for some inherent, and yet occluded purpose? Still believing what I had always been told; that this great mountain of stone was built with the sole purpose as a pharaoh's tomb. Upon gaining access to the so-called "Kings Chamber" with its much abused "sarcophagus" (?), I was startled to find that the walls (of which are perfectly flat and squared at the corners) were oddly devoid of any markings? Save for the questionable markings of red ochre paint attributed to the builders (this was unknown to me at the time) who in the manner of 'graffiti' painted the name of their pharaoh who supposedly commissioned this monument for his burial place. These suspect markings were"allegedly" found by one Col. Vyse in 1837, in the (so called) "relieving chambers" directly above the Kings Chamber; which had to be blasted open with gunpowder, no less! There was (is) absolutely no sign of hieroglyphics to be found anywhere else within this immense structure! This from a culture known to cover its monuments and funerary walls with numerous hieroglyphs in honor of deeds accomplished, feats to be remembered, as well as praise for their 'god-like' pharaohs, and with great detail. And yet nothing of the sort is found here; nothing save perfection in stone; stone which feels and looks much older than the attributed 4th dynasty origins (circa 2500 B.C.).Perhaps the author himself said it best when he wrote; "I was astonished and could find no logical resemblance to any feature one would find in a building constructed for human activity."It does make one wonder, if the Great Pyramid was not built for human activity (alive or deceased), than just what the heck was this monumental undertaking designed to do? This is exactly What Chris Dunn, a master craftsman and engineer dares to answer in his ground-breaking and paradigm shifting treatise, which posits no less than the unthinkable; that this mountain of precision engineered stone just might have been designed to "machine tolerances" beyond anything reasonable in the architecture of "HUMAN" habitats or structures, to function as a MACHINE! Or more specifically a "Power Plant," (the functioning details are found in his book).Let's review what has come to light in the last several decades:1. The thee main pyramids of Giza, are aligned to the three bright stars of Orion' belt; thanks to Robert Bauval and his "Orion Correlation Theory."2. The Great Pyramid has been called "The Bible in Stone" by some, due to its antiquity (pre or post deluge?) and the esoteric knowledge built into it by its creators.3. The three main pyramids as well as the Great Sphinx were intended as a set of monuments coeval with an unknown yet interconnected purpose.4. The Sphinx at Giza is far older than previously thought, as evidenced by the "water erosion" apparent on its (un-refurbished) sides as shown by Dr. Robert Schoch; (which would suggest coeval antiquity of the Giza complex as a whole).5. The exterior dimensions of the Great Pyramid show that the builders had knowledge of the circumference of the Earth, our distance from the Sun, as well as the precession of the equinox(s), with its 26,000 year duration , which the ancients called the "Great Year."6. The interior design of the Great Pyramid is unusual, enigmatic and serves no (known) human function imaginable, based on our understanding of architectural science for the human species.7. The (so-called) architectual "Relieving Chambers" layered above the (so-called) "Kings Chamber" (named from the Arabic perspective); are in fact "Relieving" what exactly? The massive weight from above? And yet considering that this chamber is several courses above the (so-called) "Queens Chamber - situated well below it, for which the architects saw no need for "relieving chambers," even though there must be millions of additional tons of stone above it? Clearly these spaced and layered chambers above the 'KC' had another function; (of which Mr. Dunn has an interesting idea that has to do with resonance as I recall).8. No mummified remains of anyone were ever found in the Great Pyramid. And as for the others it is my understanding that any found were from much later periods and in the best tradition of "re-purposing" an already existing monument!9. Contrary to what mainstream Egyptologists would have us believe, Khufu (Gr. Cheops) did not have this pyramid built, but rather inherited it intact, as a legacy structure form a former age, just as the stele found between the paws of the Sphinx has implied.10. The so-named "Gang of Khufu" did not write his name with red ochre paint in the crawlspace of one of the relieving chambers; this was a fraud perpetrated by a glory-hound and fund seeking explorer "wannabe" of Egyptian antiquities; who has been characterized as the "Black sheep" of his family. We find Colonel Vyse, along with his cohort(s) in crime, who accomplished this heinous act of fraud after blasting his way into a sealed cavity, in 1837. This outrageous act of fraud has 'mucked-up' our understanding of these monuments to this very day, IMHO. (See the late authors Z. Sitchin's "Stairway to Heaven," Chapter entitled "Forging the Pharaoh's Name." Also The late Phillip Coppens, "Murder and forgery inside the Great Pyramid?" As found online; both provide in-depth perspective on this travesty). The ten items offered above, are but the tip of a vast iceberg of information concerning this subject; the list of incongruous anomalies and found revelations, could go on for several pages. And now we must add the very real possibility that a primary function of this last existing 'wonder of the ancient world', may have been a cleverly designed source of (free) power or energy as well? It is exciting and boggles the mind, but don't expect mainstream, conventional Egyptology to climb on board any of this any time soon. They are content to believe the lie about Khufu. They are loath to admit that Victorian era antiquarians may have mislead those extant institutions of higher learning for fame and profit. A legacy that muddles the picture and hampers a fresh perspective. For me personally, after all the books I've read on this particular subject; I have come to the conclusion that we are dealing with something far older than we dare imagine. A multi-faceted and purpose built structure, designed by a culture seemingly far brighter than we think we are. A structure (including others on the Giza plateau) that are so 'hoary with age' that they were inherited and, Here's the key, "repurposed" over time by younger civilizations who had forgotten the true genesis of these structures, or who the original builders might have been? These later cultures tried their best to copy these pyramids, and mostly failed to execute such lasting edifices. Hopefully one day we will learn who really built these Giza pyramids, we may never fully comprehend how. For as advanced as we "think" we are, those answers still elude us.In my mind the notion of a "Power Plant" built with machine precision, is not too much of a stretch of ones imagination. Even if this isn't the case, and its intended or inherent purpose was something else altogether; I think many would agree that the Great Pyramid is of a much older provenance, regardless of what mainstream Egyptology (including a shady character named Zawi Hawass) would have us believe. As for Khufu (aka Cheops) being the commissioning pharaoh of this massive and enigmatic undertaking; there is very little, if not suspect or contradictory evidence that he was indeed the guy that said "let it be built." However the evidence (if one is open to it) would suggest that Khufu did, in fact "inherit" the Great Pyramid, which to my thinking is much more plausible.Mind you this was a culture who venerated their esteemed pharaohs with cyclopean statues and yet we find but just one statue of Khufu (now in the Cairo museum) which stands a mighty 3 inches tall! Yeah that makes sense; are we to believe he used up all his "pharaoh monument points" on the Great Pyramid? Sure, that must be what happened. I can just see Biff thumping on Marty's dad's head now, as he shouts; "Wake Up Mcfly!"Perhaps we are the ones that need to "Wake UP" to the true heritage and legacy of our ancient ancestors. Taken collectively, all the cyclopean, monolithic and enigmatic stone structures found all over this planet, it is increasingly clear that we are missing something profound and wondrous about our very ancient, and un-doubtfully 'pre-cataclysmic' past.Read Mr. Dunn's book and decide for yourself. I think you will find that his thesis is very credible, extremely astute and helps to explain some very unusual design features within this enigmatic structure. His book is well written, captivating and hard to put down.

Enjoyed a refreshing look at the remains of ancient Egypt by a qualified engineer. His evidence for construction with advanced methods is interesting, observable, and logical. If our civilization had taken Tesla's research seriously instead of our oil-based, greed-motivated combustion economy, our engineers may developed other methods of generating electricity. Then again, modern Egypt and the Middle East wouldn't have sold any oil.To paraphrase Arthur C Clark:If a scientist states that something is possible, it's almost certainly right. If a scientist states that something is impossible, it's probably wrong. The only way of finding the possible is to go past the impossible.Advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Since I have a bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering and am now retired, I found Chris Dunn's theory to be particularly interesting. I know from my own shop experience just how difficult it truly is to repeat high tolerance work on even small, as in what you can hold in the palm of your hand, parts much less something the size of the King's Chamber. And since one of my main functions was chief estimator for putting a price to this kind of work, I also have a pretty good handle on how much work like this costs. So, to suggest that the ancients would put this kind of effort, and cost, into a mere burial chamber is ludicrous, at best. So, if the Giza complex was not built as a burial complex, then what the heck was it built for? And why? And what, other than a finely tuned and superbly crafted machine, would require such an incredible level of high tolerance work and more importantly, repeatable high tolerance work, done over and over and over again. In my opinion, Chris Dunn's work is truly an amazing discovery as well as a masterful piece of detective work. Truly Amazing.

This exploration of the Great Pyramid at Giza is absolutely astonishing. Of the hundred of books I have read in the "fringe" genre, this is definitely one of the very best. Christopher Dunn demonstrates how precision machining was used to create many of the artifacts in and around the pyramid--techniques that rival (and often surpass) those employed today. Dunn expertly shows how the notion of slave labor working with copper chisels and ropes to create these artifacts is simply absurd. A veteran engineer himself, Dunn adroitly presents one of the most compelling and intriguing theories about what the pyramids were (probably) actually for: mass energy production and distribution. This book will literally change everything you know about the ancient past. An absolutely incredible read!

I rated this book excellent because it is very helpful and useful. I enjoyed read and using the information that was written. I would recommend this book to everyone that wants and needs a book that not only gives important information about different recipes, but it gives an encouraging word also. I used this book to teach and encourage the people in my church. I would recommend this seller to everyone...very timely in delivery.

Great guide. Used it a couple of times already and will again for future to help facilitate the training of future elders. Its contents are well written and thought provoking. It really helps communication and discussion regarding the proper training of future elders.

This resource is set up to be used as a mentoring guide one on one or one on two or three. If you use it for a class, it is difficult to assign both the reading book and this study guide because it is so in depth that the average man will have a hard time completing the assignments. Nevertheless, it is well worth whatever effort men will put into it.

My husband is going through this with our pastor and he loves it. It is very thorough and gives clear and concise examples on how to implement the lessons.

Great resource. We use it regularly while mentoring new elders in my church.

One of the best tools for taking men through the process of becoming an elder. It does not make an elder, but it makes it easier to discern and affirm the qualified elder in your midst. Regardless if they come out an elder, they understand the biblical role of an elder and are better because of it.

My husband is doing a study at our church and this is the book they are using. My husband is quite impressed with the theology in the book.

Ordered this for a Pastor who heard some of the teachings. So far she's liking it.
