 A book that defies a synopsis that will do it justice, Edward Gorey's "The Object-Lesson" is a sequence of abstract events connected with a thread of a phrase. Each turn of a page is a mere moment in time where the reader doesn't fully understand the story or context. It starts off with a missing limb and ends with a farewell. A mysterious non-sensical narrative that is still quite enchanting and intriguing. There's many stories in this book, we just don't get the full one. Get it, if not for the story, then for the art... Gorey's style is unique and timeless.If you like this style of book then you might also enjoy a fairytale about a little girl and a haunted house: The Stumps of Flattop Hill

This book is great Edward Gorey fun. Each page contains one intriguing sentence that is completely unrelated to the sentence on the last page, but the implication is that the author is telling one coherent story. The pictures are hilarious, the vocabulary stimulating, and the situations entertainingly bizarre.

Very odd stories, but enjoyed the book.

It was an okay story. Only read it once then resold because it was just gathering dust on my bookshelf.

Not laugh-out-loud hilarious (although I loved His Lordship presenting the Throbblefoot Spectre with a piece of string - cue a picture of the ghost making a cat's cradle!)This is a short work, with three illustrations per page, surely a take-off of Japanese haiku. With such obscure and meaningless lines as:"At twilight, however, no message had come from the asylum,so the others retired to the kiosk,only to discover the cakes iced a peculiar shade of green."Wonderful b/w illustrations as ever.

Edward Gorey, most easily recognizable for the opening animation of the television show "Mystery!", wrote dozens of strangely comic picture-books that were not intended for children. The Object-Lesson shines among them.The first sentence, divided amongst six elaborately crosshatched panoramic ink drawings, initiates what is only the first of several surreal and non-sequiturial narratives and gives readers the sense that an elaborate story of some sort is unfolding and they are mearly seeing brief snippets.Having just read the book, I'd say the effect is of looking out from inside a novel: a story is happening, but the large passages of narration that connect the individual events of "The Object-Lesson" into a single story are as unavailable to the reader as they are to the characters. It's mysterious, it's exciting, it's lots and lots of fun.I reccomend buying this and leaving it anywhere in your home where people will be waiting for the maybe-five minutes it takes to finish the book, as the wierdness of it all will make their day that much more fun.

The pictures alone make this book worth getting. If the story had been better, I would have given this book a five. As it is though, the story felt like each page was written separately, to be collected together in the end. Perhaps I need someone to explain the story to me, but it seems like many of the pages are only related to one another if you're in the habit of disengaging your brain from reality.

This book seems like a great source until you get down to the nitty gritty and start building. I am in the middle of building "The Poultry Farmer" and while the concept and the building materials are sturdy there are entire sections of instructions missing as well as material lists. I'm having to improvise to not waste time and money. It's like this book was written without being edited or checked for errors. If you are an experienced carpenter you can fill in the blanks but I would not recommend this book for the average joe.

This is a worthless book full of complicated instructions that don't make any sense. Buy a coop for dummies book, you're gonna thank me.

We built the Chicken Fun Run (first design in the book), but we found a number of errors and omissions in terms of the cuts, measurements, and details in the instructions. If you are an experienced carpenter, this book does have some nice ideas, but you really need to use this book as an idea starter, rather than a step-by-step guide. If you are not an experienced carpenter, get detailed plans online or buy a coop (or some other structure and modify it). Also, the coop designs in this book are really not suitable for hot climates - the designs are for colder weather coops.

Found a good plan for 5 chickens, but just wish there was more specific data about designs, materials and dimensions. Had to figure many things out on my own

Firstly I have no experience building anything before, (I am a woman building this with my MIL and two toddlers.) I bought this book several months ago and it sat around before I got brave enough to start building the Olde Shack plan. While I am not finished with construction I have made good progress. What I can say is that the directions are not always clear, or perhaps the author expects you to have at least a little construction knowledge. The authors choice of words are confusing at times too, i.e. The author states to make the foundation from 4x4x10s and the 8 foot planks which I thought meant 2x4x8s so my foundation is now built wrong but I realized this to late. Also the materials list is very generalized, I need L backers but no idea how many is one example. I am now at construction of the roof of my coop but confused about the directions as it states to make an 8x7.5' frame to mount to the outside of the walls so that the inner beams will rest inside of the frame (this doesn't work mathematically as the constructed walls measure 7.5x8'4"). I wish the book was spelled out much simpler as I have zero experience.

Not what I hoped it would be. Nice coops, but none fit my need which is to build a coop inside my 8 by 20 run.

Lots of ideas. It helps to have some carpentry skills but the directions were detailed enough that almost anyone could build a coop.

BUY THIS BOOK if you are wading through these reviews in order to decide if you should buy this book and are trying to educate yourself on why the national debt matters. it is worth buying.I am an educated person yet not in areas of finance and economics. I found the book tremendously helpful to understand better concepts and issues on federal debt / deficits and hence our budget. I believe I went from reliance on anecdotal evidence and some of my own political biases on theses issues to enlightened to question far more thoroughly. Social Security, Medicare, entitlement programs, why debt and tax are not "four letter words", ... I am more well armed.I am a fervent independent and abhor being labelled a conservative or liberal yet I find the preponderance of conservative leaning criticisms in these reviews understandable if you're of that ideology and feel compelled to lash out at anyone who differs with your opinion I find them unwarranted in discrediting the educational merits and defensible data of the authors. This book had a as a goal to understand the debt and present regular large deficits from a historical perspective and it does that. Some valuable critical reviews point out relevant issues missing and I can buy that criticism. I was rather worn out after 234 pages so degree to edit for what audience you're after comes into play.The authors make it clear that on pg 186 heading into their chapter Where Do We Go From Here "We do not expect all readers to agree with us on how the deficit should be reduced; even those who share our views about the historical causes of our current and future deficits will have different visions for our society and the place of the federal government. Our goal is simply to show that we can achieve a sustainable level of national debt while maintaining a government that plays a crucial role we expect from it today - protecting all of us from major risks to our welfare today and investing in a more prosperous future." The chapter accomplishes that goal and while I found myself disagreeing with some of their recommendations I did not get the feeling I was being brain-washed by ideologists.

Many books of this ilk tend to overwhelm readers. Furthermore, it helps the narration move along while providing more demanding readers with excellent references and an additional technical appendix.6. An interesting look at the history of national debt. The evolution of American politics.7. Great quotes and summaries that capture the essence of the concepts, "fiscal policy is about ensuring that the government has the resources necessary to address current public priorities and respond to future emergencies".8. Explains the different roles of the government with a focus of course on finances.9. An evolution of economic policies. The economical philosophies of the Presidents built into the narration. Fascinating insights and approaches and the impact it had on society.10. A look at the modern antitax movement.11. Influential characters throughout history that had a major role on fiscal policy. People like Grover Norquist. The policy differences. The ideological differences.12. Taxes, taxes, taxes...a look at the various forms of taxation. Tax expenditures.13. One of the best quotes ever, "In one of history's ironies, the economy was blown up not by the government debt that politicians had inveighed against for decades, but by private sector debt that banks had been manufacturing as fast as they could--and it was the federal government that had to pick up the pieces".14. Economics is difficult. Some topics will still elude the layperson but overall I think this book gets it mostly right.4. A great notes section but a separate formal bibliography was warranted.In summary, I really enjoyed reading this book. It's just well written, educational and a book that delivers. I feel much more comfortable and better informed about the national debt. The excellent prose and the right level of economics makes this book a treat for anyone interested in learning about the national debt and the key terms and arguments associated with it. The authors provide a proposal of well thought-out list of recommendations to help control the national debt and secure our democracy. I really enjoyed this book for the journey. I stumbled into this author at Half-price books, when the store was charging one dollar for his adventure seeking the Gugu's of Sumatra. Since I hope to take horseback packtrips in the future, and I am fascinated by the Far East, I though I might enjoy this.I liked this book better than the other: His keen observations of the people he meets, and his respect for their culture, help him to accomplish what he sets out to do, overcoming many setbacks and making friends along the way.What surprised me most was his love and caring for the horses and camels who assisted him in the trek. He noticed their personalities, strengths and weaknesses, using all of that information to make decisions about how to treat them, and when to let them go. He was genuinely distressed when they were suffering injury, doing everything he could to minimize their suffering. He mourned their loss, whether the loss was from leaving them behind or from their deaths. The Mongolian perspective was quite different and more practical, and he saw the benefit in it, but struggled with adopting it for himself.

Mr. Allen took amazing photographs during his journey through Mongolia. I would recommend the book for its pictures alone. Mr. Allen's journal entries weren't quite as engaging as his photos, however. I found that he had a tendancy to repeat things. But aside from that, he gave excellent descriptions of the country's proud people, the harsh yet beautiful landscape, as well as humorous details about his camels and journeying mishaps. If you don't know much about present-day Mongolia and wish you did, get this book.

I have read this book cover to cover at three different points over the years, and I must say that this is a highly recommended resource for anyone needing a primer in spectroscopic techniques. This book has been a faithful friend since my undergrad years and now well into my seasoned academic career. Sure there are other books, but it is hard to find such a concise yet reasonably comprehensive resource which holds your hand when navigating a plethora of techniques used for organic molecular structure determination. It is a great reference for day-to-day analysis in the lab and conveys complex concepts in rather simple terms. The best part is the problem set, which really makes you work your brain and tremendously help in absorbing those concepts.Ok, enough about the book - the seller is an absolute pleasure to deal with as well. The book is packed carefully and it arrived unscathed through the normal postal service.Both the book and the seller are highly recommended

This book is required for my Organic Spectroscopy class. Supposedly, another version of this book has the answer key for the practice problems in it. THIS VERSION DOES NOT HAVE THE ANSWERS TO PRACTICE PROBLEMS IN IT. I remember looking at an almost identical "Student Version" of the book on amazon too; not sure if the answers are in that one or not, but other than the words "Student version", I couldn't figure out the difference between these two. I haven't seen the other one, so I can't say. The only downside is the difference between the versions of the Eight edition not being clear.Other than that, I really like the textbook so far. It is short and easy to understand. I've only been working with the Mass Spec chapter so far, but it provides a lot of good information on interpreting EI spectra, and some on CI spectra as well.

A fine book for undergraduate structure determination of organic chemicals using spectroscopic data. Very affordable price. Very fast shipping and delivery.

The text is dense and poorly explained, but the book is worth the money for the end of chapter problems and chapters 7-8.

This is a good book that could have been great. It features a strong opening section in which Lakoff explicates on his basic concept of frames and how they relate to the brain's structure and functioning. Keeping a laser focus on that concept would have yielded a shorter book but one that's better than this one. Unfortunately, after a terrific start, Lakoff spends the final third of the book mostly riffing about policy issues themselves, rather than about how to frame them effectively. At this point, the book reads like an audition for gig as a pundit at the Washington Post instead of a primer on communicating effectively. And there's an awful lot of filler. (You can tell an author's padding when he unnecessarily resorts to lists. Lakoff has lots and lots of them, none helpful.)If you're interested in the field of political communication, this book is a must-read in spite of its shortcomings. But for me it was difficult to not think of the book that it shoulda, coulda, woulda been with much more focus and a few more real world examples.

I like Lakoff’s cognitive approach and book-ending answers to conversing with slogan-laden so-called conservatives who beat up progressive and longtime tried and true American values with government by corporate power$. Many on both sides share these values, but that is obscured by past 3 years of jingoistic jousting.HavingRead the book, The Family, as I did: it traces how today’s government fulfills plans set in motion early in 20th century, Lakoff’s is a modern updated book with tips for undoing the work of all those decades-secret agendas for a different America, never envisioned in our important documents. Read, as I did, hundreds of original documents. Textbooks are published to sell, and wow! They are now simply deleting historical facts to sell to the audience which wants our nation’s past revamped.

About half way through reading, but this is a keeper. We have constant discussions about "why can't the other side see the truth" and "why don't they hear facts and believe them". This book explains it all. I'm hoping that the end will give examples of how to respond to specific questions/topics. This topic is one no one knows or talks about but it is present in everyday political and religious conversations.If someone asked for one reason why they should read, I guess my reply would be that you need to understand that your brain cannot understand a topic unless it has been previously introduced - we do this with 'frames' and this book will explain why people of different political beliefs differ so much

Mr. Lakoff's book is a primer on talking to people on the right in a way that will more likely create understanding.Mr. Lakoff makes a cogent case that the primary issue is the way in which an issue is "framed." When we start to argue our point using the terminology of our opponent. it's giving your opponent the home field advantage. Not only have we assured we will lose the argument, we also practically assure that we will never find a meeting of the minds. We need to begin from a standpoint of shared values.The current antagonism between progressives and the right has a life of its own, and can poison any discussion from its beginning. This book offers positive ways to approach that problem.The final and most useful section is "How to respond to Conservatives." It offers many good guidelines. There are so many suggestions, I read that section several times to take it all in.Even though I avoid debates because of the anger they inevitably create, after reading the last chapter, I almost felt like seeking out a conservative to try to have a positive dialogue, and now I feel far more ready whenever that kind of conversation comes up.

I read the original and am enjoying the updated version. However, I made the mistake of ordering the audio version too. The person who reads it sounds like he doesn't understand what he is reading. It is very annoying and you can't get your money back.

This book is a must read for anyone who wonders why Democrats, Liberals, Progressives, etc. keep losing elections in spite of being the majority of the voters. Lackoff is masterful in explaining how our subconscious brains work and take the "frames" of the right wing and incorporate them into our own thinking. He expertly explains the difference in the Conservative Strong Father model and the Liberal Two Parent Egalitarian model. The strong father model is reinforced in families that practice most religions and it is reinforced in military service. Liberals have very little reinforcement of their two parent egalitarian model other than in liberal universities. I have a much clearer understanding of my culture now and I also learned a lot about how to frame my own values, rather than repeating the Fox News frames that are heard by most people, most often."

I am a communications graduate and I love the field, especially within communication theories, rhetoric, and connecting it to society. My professor has mentioned George Lakoff throughout my study and when I graduated my bachelors and went into my masters, I wanted to know more. The first book I bought was this one. This book made me realize so many things about American society and how we can overcome difficult times by using communications. It was fascinating to read plans that Democrats, or Republicans, can take to mold this place differently. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and even if you disagree with his views, you can still take away the ideas.
